    Great historical explanation of planning in Toronto.
    An issue we saw in the 50s is even worse now in the 20s. Lack of regional planning bodies and reg govt with actual power. Toronto has spilled far beyond the old Metro borders, but our planning system hasn’t followed that. The metropolitan area is divided into several cities and regions each with their own plans. The province has abandoned their role as regional planner and this has lead to a shitshow.
    There is little to no coordination on where to build housing, transit, social services, and commerce. Artifical municipal boundaries have created a mess of bureaucracy and lack of coordination. Half-measures like Metrolinx have been attempted, but with little success.
    We need a regional government for Toronto with the power to plan and build for growth, infrastructure, transit, and homes.

      I totally agree, the whole Golden Horseshoe needs to be better connected as from what I’ve heard and experienced , it’s A LOT of commuters and while Toronto now is investing more in transit there is still a lot of work to be done… ( hopefully a HSR system from Toronto- Montreal will be developed)

    When I lived in Leaside I just took the Bayview extension downtown. 20 minute commute most days. I would suggest a better mic as some of the narration is a little hard to understand.

      Trying to find the best settings for the mic still!

    Felt like this video could've been a lot longer and went through different time periods and decisions up to issues being faced today

      100% there is A LOT of history when it came to Toronto’s urban planning, I tried taking the period where the most happened, to make the message clear that since this original urban planning boom in the 50-70’s not much work has been done … our view of what a city should be has changed but on the street not much has changed!
      I hope you still were able to enjoy the video! 🙏

    Yeah a great example of this is stagnant subway stations system.. in other cities systems as old as the damn TTC would have more than a dozen underground lines and here we only have 3 lines!?

    • @wesbrown738
      @wesbrown738 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And the third line is pretty irrelevant it's really just 2 lines

      To be fair, we will be getting 2 lines (relatively) soon, and the Ontario Line should be operational by 2030, which would give the city 6 lines. Most of the expansion plans were actually proposed in the 80s and 90s, but were cancelled due to lack of funding and political squabbling.

      @KardiFan2000 calling finch west and the crosstown subways is part of the problem. Finch west is a streetcar/tram (perfectly acceptable for the corridor) and crosstown is an abomination of underground subway and at grade streetcar. Absolutley ridiculous considering the current and planned density and the network benifits of a proper heavy rail subway along eglinton. Anyways at least the ontario line is quite good and go rer is looking good too. Hopefully we get the sheppard extension this century as well.

      @@soso-zz9qf Fair points, although I didn't call Line 5 and 6 subways, I called them "lines".

      @@KardiFan2000 OP was talking about the stagnant subway system. We've had expansions like Finch West multiple times: St. Claire; Harbourfront; Lakeshore West (before it got nuked); that one pathetic part of King St.; and ofc Spadina. Unfortunatley due to bad stop spacing and no real transit signal priority those "lrts" are often stuck in traffic. I am holding out hope Finch West is gonna b better tho, it has better stop spacing and better grade seperation imo.

    My great grandfather would not have fought and died fighting germans for what this country has become. Being denied information sucks

    I saw coverage on the potential of Lithium extraction at the salton sea region. (It made me think) I don't get why it seems to be so hard for this country to realize that If something huge is going to present itself in a region, then it should BENEFIT the entire region. We cannot keep doing this "oh it'll bring "x" amount of jobs" *but in reality time & time again we see something greatly benefit a very small select few. While the rest of the region around it completely suffers & is on its own. This country is more than capable of doing away with this soulless late stage capitalistic approach to EVERYTHING! Our state and federal government is more than capable of finding intelligent ways to improve regions across this country that are suffering greatly. Come on. This is not an impossible issue to overcome. Our government cannot keep doing nothing and thinking anything will get better or fix itself.. It's clear a lot of things are suffering around the country right now and they got to address it and stop acting like it's something they don't have to talk about and figure out new ways to improve this country. These people in our government say they supposedly care about this country and it's people? Stop and look around tho (all they care about is, as long as they are doing good, financially benefitting from their government positions, if their stocks or investments are looking good? etc.) But if everything else in society is falling apart around them.. They don't seem to care at all. They gotta change that if they want the citizens of this country to respect them At All. They also need to change if they want this country to stay amazing at all. Instead of ignoring that so many aspects that made these places great are falling apart all around us..
