A show is planned...then aired...series after series.....characters become well known....then a natural end...then reruns.......and finally, becomes legend. That's Cheers.
After the tv series and started the movies, was floored in the movie Night shift with Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton back in late 80s (maybe wrong) but when she took off her robe in the kitchen while making breakfast... "right on right on"!!
While I stopped watching cheers after long left and still think her character was 1 of the best ever in the history of tv and Long totally nailed her, I am sort of beginning to agree with audiences that her character did become somewhat annoying in the later years and that the writers did not write for her as well probably I saw this around season 5.
@@marisleuk no that's fan theory and she only give notice she was leaving around December 86, half way through the season so it debunks that. I think it was more that the writers had written themselves into a corner a bit and exhausted the storyline, there is only so far you can go after all.It is a bit like desperate housewives, homeland or lost, while early seasons were spectacular it was clear that by later years the writers had lost the plot a bit and didn't know how to progress.
Ok, the thing was that she was hesitant! She experessed her unsatisfaction around the fourth season, with the arc that the writters are going with for Sam and Diane. She wanted them to be married, the writters didn't. So she refused to renew her contract at the start of seadon five. They started searching for a replacement (just in case.) So, the notion that she only notified them by Dec 86 is not true. They went as far as getting Kirstie to read with Ted and Rhea for her audition during the fifth season. Now, that's not to say that they weren't hoping that Shelley would decide to stay, they were! Even the cast! But they also intentionally made Shelley's character Diane more annoying than ever, to prepare the audiance for her departure! that was real as per this article: ( people.com/archive/cheers-and-tears-the-long-goodbye-vol-27-no-8/ )
''But they also intentionally made Shelley's character Diane more annoying than ever, to prepare the audiance for her departure! '' again though this is fan fiction-nobody involved with the show ever directly said that. It is like susan in desperate housewives, whilst audiences and critics loved her in season 1 they all seemed to turn against her in the later years as the writers simply wrote bad for her and wrote her[an actress in her 40s] like a ditzy 25 year old and it didn't work and stops becoming cute. That's what happens sometimes-i don't think there was any intention. It was the fact that long was getting older too, she was 37[in Hollywood years that's old sadly especially for women] by the time the last season went on air and whilst the 'will they /won't they' is cute when a couple are in their 20s/earlier 30s it becomes a bit silly when the actors are pushing 40. It is probably why Meg Ryan's career tanked too as she aged. In essence Diane and Sam were both becoming too old to play womanizing jock/ girl next door pretty blonde by the 5th season. Remember too that Long was supposed to be the femme fatale eye candy in the bar which did work in her earlier years but not so much in the last 2 seasons as she had gotten older. Even look at Long in the 1st three seasons and she looked visibly younger and more youthful then- in the later years she looked like a mature woman. Roles like 'the pretty blonde' have a shelf life and I think that's why Diane didn't work as well in her later years because audiences were like 'act your age' and her naivety and innocence just lost its charm. Danson himself even criticised his character in his later years for being written too young for his age as a womaniser and claimed that's a big part of why he left the show "He got older, you know ... [the writers] tried to make him Sammy again. But he's 45 now. I'm 45. It's OK to be chasing around when you're 37. But when you're 45, it's kind of sad to be chasing around that way."
Shelly looks so different yet the same sparkle in her eyes and smile.
So good to see Shelly Long so happy. Interesting comment by Shelly ....... "Ted is a gentleman like Cary Grant".
Newsflash: WOMEN AGE!!! Ted looks older too (white hair) .... or didn't you notice??
Loved the show and still watch it I don’t drink 🚱 but I would have enjoyed sitting in that bar with those folk

I wonder how many of us would have loved to have walked down the snowy steps outside, open the bar door, and asked Sam for a beer 🍺
They both watch Frasier, and they were both also on Frasier. 😀
Great upload 😊 thx a lot

cn always tell when its recorded right off the tv screen. that 'echoy' grainy sound and look.

The writers did this on purpose so she would not be so missed after she left. Thats what i think.

I do think there was something off about Diane in Season 5 in comparison to the first four years.
TED? WHERE YOUR HAIR PIECE??
