Thanks a lot, your tips are very useful! And your channel deserves a LOT more subscribers! The hardest part for me is to get this isolated shoulder for the shank centered and nice. Sometimes due to misblows it gets off center and the shoulder transition is ruined. It requires very precise hammering skills! I also upset the head hammering from different sides, as it also tends to move the mass of the head off center and towards me, when upsetting from only one side.
It takes practice and accuracy! When upsetting the head of you see it going off to one side you can ‘hook’ the material over to try get it more centred.

Hi Oscar could you do a video on how you line your coke forge? Currently using one but unsure on the height my tuyere needs to be in relation to the lining. I have just lined my forge with coke dust.
Hi Rob I did do a video a little while ago about my forge in which I touched on that subject but it’s basically lined with coal slack (dust). As long as your tuyere is water cooled you’ll be fine. As for the height of the tuyere I recon the air feed is about 5-6 inches above the bottom of the forge leaving plenty of space for coal slack insulation.
@@oscarduck1920 ok great, does the tuyere need to be below the coal slack? Just with using my set up I've noticed it seems to burn better when the fire is built above the air feed rather than being fed directly into it from the side.
Yes. You can pack coal slack around the tuyere leaving the opener clear and as you say you have quite a deep fire but that’s mainly so the clinker can form at the bottom whilst your using the clear burning fuel at the top.
If you drew down the shank of the nail over a hardy block (or made the shank length 1/2 the width of your anvil) could you forge two nails at a time point-to-point? Or would it get too floppy?
It’s an idea, I don’t know if it would increase efficiency, I think I could make them quicker doing one shank (and therefore isolation) at a time. Might give it a try though!
I have one or two questions, I am a beginner in blacksmithing and I want to know why you cut with a chisel and not with a hardy with one straight side like a butcher? Is that simlpler to adjust the angle of the face on the nail?
One trick to try when you cut straight through and get that offset peak in the metal you're going to upset for the head is to make sure when you put the piece into the header you put that peak on the far side, away from you. This way, when you bring the hammer down for that first stroke, you can angle it a bit so the curve of the hammer's arc hits that peak and kind of curls it in to the center of the mass. It's harder to explain than it is to do, really. The worst part is remembering to get it in the correct orientation so the header tool's handle is still comfortable to hold because you might have to rotate things around if you forget to align the peak of the nail head properly.

It’s mainly because I’m working with limited tools at the moment! And I would need to alter my hardy tool to fit this anvil.
