    Recommended Sublimation Printers for Beginners
    Epson F570: shrsl.com/3ufb9

I would not say the 570 is for beginners due to price point. The 170. would be better for beginners.

I have the F170, it prints 8.5 and up to 47.24 long. I do buy the roll and cut it for the longer than standard paper. I don't know why Epson doesn't tell you how to print the longer paper, it just says you can print longer. I found a video on printing longer paper and they also sold the 8.5 roll paper. I ordered it and it prints very well. I just got the F570 after being satisfied with the F170 for over a year. You won't be disappointed in the F170. I wish I had the space to keep them both. good luck to all

This is literally the best video on sublimation printers I have found. I've watched a ton of them. Thank you for this. I cannot imagine being able to spend $2600 on a printer, plus the heat press, mug/tumbler press and blanks. I bought an epson et 15000 and it didn't work at all straight out of the box. But I have tumbler blanks. If it can't print that then I'm out of options. I cannot afford $2600 for a printer. I feel so defeated.

Can you please confirm what size paper the F170 prints? You mention in the comparison (about 3:55 ish in) that the F170 only prints 8.5 x 11, but the Epson F170 FAQ says it prints A4, Letter, and Legal. Really hoping the F170 also prints the larger size paper since mine is already on its way. Thanks for all you do ... always so helpful!

  • @tcrow49

20 oz skinny tumblers are about 8.2 x9.4 inches. 8.5x11 I believe will work. And there is a lot of 3rd party inks that offer color profiles. And when your talking about price I can get a good sublimation ink for $40 for 3 70oz bottles cmy and 1 136oz bottle of K with a color profile that works and works well and that's not $40 a bottle but $40 for 4 bottles. I have not seen any products made with Epson sublimation ink but some of those 3rd party inks really pop, but I remember the day with sawgrass married to Epson and the 4800 printer and what a mess that was. I'm talking head clog city. Those printers were high high dollar printers and who ever got one of those got ripped off bad. It's not that way now but if you price these printers and do the math you will see why most people go with the Epson's. This is just the other side of the story.

Then the last time I changed my settings, instead of choosing textile for fabric, I let the settings at standard, not on high quality and I can't remember if I chose textile or rigid but it printed out great, no streaks. On conversion: Printers either die very soon (in the electronic manufacturing industry this is called "infant mortality") or they die after years of use. That lengthy window of reliability is why you should avoid buying extended warranties, which are extremely profitable for the seller. If you are using an abrasive ink, it is going to wear out printheads sooner, but in light hobby use this may not be an issue. In that case you are more likely to have a failure due to dis-use (clogs). I don't consider warranty important, out of the 50 or so printers I have owned, I have had three failures that a warranty would have applied to. I don't see a problem with converting a low cost printer, or a second hand printer, but I would not put a lot of money into doing that on a more expensive printer.

@ Just curious, while I am not new to printers, or photographic dye sublimation, I am just exploring the use of sublimation to mark goods. Why are the Epson F170 and the Brother SP1 not on your beginner's list? I realize print dimensions are more limited, but for a true beginner, especially someone on a budget, the price difference is substantial. When you aren't sure this is your path, it is a lot easier to test the waters at around $400 than around $2400. One thing I will weigh in on, I see a lot of people who say they chose the Brother because they don't want to mess with "pouring ink". This is a short sighted approach. I have a couple of Brother color lasers, but when it comes to ink jets, Epson has always produced a good product. The Ecotank, or Supertank, is a wonderful development. It dramatically reduces the cost of operation. I have Epson Ecotank printers for photographic work, and not only is the print quality incredible, but the cost of operation is dramatically lower than cartridge printers. I am no longer tempted to use off brand ink (although I do use off brand toner in my lasers). It is also worth mentioning that you go much longer between refilling ink than you do replacing cartridges, so it is an infrequent and simple task. You also generate less waste because the plastic bottles hold so much more ink than the plastic cartridges and the bottles are made with less plastic. Finally, I was just looking at the Epson ET2803. It is not a sublimation printer, but at $179 it is a CYMK Ecotank printer. If someone was feeling experimental and wanted to do a cheap "throwaway" conversion, this printer may be a disposable candidate. In fact, I may try it myself while I am learning whether sublimation is a path for me. I don't see it as a production solution, and if you know you are committed to sublimation I would buy a sublimation printer. I do want to say I think the printers on your list are probably very good, and I also want to thank you for your videos, they are helpful.
