      How long have you been training? How long does it usually take for people not to have slight inaccuracies for techniques in light spars and same question but in heavy spars? What were you like at the beginning vs when you posted this comment? Were there lots of people better than you, few people, or only one person that did better? Is there anything in your performance in your techniques that should actually raise concern or were you being too harsh on yourself? Whatever made you feel like crap before posting that comment, just know you were probably closer to your goal more than you realized, especially in comparison to how people begin from scratch.

    1.) defense on point
    2.) can you hit hard?
    3.) composed during sparring bigger or more skilled opponents
    4.) body condition… can you take low kicks? Hard body shots?
    5.) you have to want it! Do you feel confident in your skills?
    6.) need to be nervous. This is serious, healthy respect for the opponent and what could happen.

    The number 6 reminded me of the chapter from Vagabond when a fellow swordsman stabbed his junior in the thigh with a sword because he though winning wasn't really taking a death battle seriously. So he did that to prevent his junior killing himself in the future. Being scared of fighting is a completely natural response. Controlling your fear is only the next step. It is acquired through experience. Otherwise the lack of fear simply dulls your senses and exposes yourself to the danger you don't even recognize. Great video that made me think about those things! Thank you very much!

    I've had 3 amateur MMA fights and luckily I won 2 of them and scored a draw in the other. I signed with BTC MMA and am having a pro MMA fight in March.
    The biggest thing for me that I trained relentlessly was keeping my cool under fire. Keeping my composure after getting hit. It is number 1 in my experience. I trained it by allowing people to start with me in bad positions grappling or sparring against bigger and technically skilled sparring partners. It made the fights feel like how a normal friday at my club feels.
    I don't try to "win" in training. I prefer to get my butt whooped on in training and force my mind and body to deal with it. Now I'm ranked on tapology as a top 5 amateur welterweight in Canada and I attribute that entirely to allowing myself to be in bad positions in training and fighting through it.
    My second opponent was jacked and very explosive. I had to weather a hell of a storm in the first minute while he gassed himself then my grappling took over and he ended up under my mount taking shots. I would not have been able to get him there if I lost composure under his crazy spamming pressure.
    EDIT: A couple of you seem interested in seeing my fights so here is the link to my "draw" fight where I was under a ton of pressure: th-cam.com/video/Rgud5Spp9ms/w-d-xo.html

    • @Gatsu1995
      @Gatsu1995 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Based on his other videos I'd say Gabriel would say something like, "if you want to full time you have to be obsessed and commited." Meaning you have to think about it all the time. If you're wasting your thoughta on university you might not make it into full time. You're going to have debt to pay off and hopefully a complicated career to think about. It's going to take a lot of your time where when you come home you might start wanting a family. My recommendation is drop out fine the minimum necessary effort to keep a roof over your head and to be healthy and then obsess about the art non stop. If you have to work a job make sure it's a job that you can do workouts think or watch videos during your shift.

    • @twentyonetortas5921
      @twentyonetortas5921 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been almost a year. Any updates? I read that other reply and gotta ask: was it possible to balance university + job + training without havung to do a major sacrifice on either of the three? If it is possible to balance all three without reducing/slightly cutting off any of them, how? Is it possible but it just wasn't possible for you? How are you?

Does one attend physical classes more while still at school and just slightly more or a lot more vs you working at a job? Also how was your fight?

    Such an important video for beginners, I still remember when my coach told me I should take a fight, I was shocked because in my mind I was still years away from being ready. We talked together and we agreed on a kyokushin tournament since head movements were my biggest weakness, I thought I would barely be competitive but ultimately I won 3 fights in one afternoon and I will never forget the smile on my coach at the end of the tournament when he said "told you you were ready".

      What do you mean by choosing a kyokushin tournament? Usually you choose a martial art and find a coach that's involved in the chosen martial art. Your comment gives me the impression that your coach does other martial arts which you were involved in as well before they decided kyokushin for you to compete in.

      It was a kickboxing gym but my headcoach was a former world ranked kyokushin fighter, he had many connections in this sport so he got me a spot in a tournament and gave me a blue belt even if I had no pure karate training.
      It is really not hard to switch from kickboxing to kyokushin, just focus more on body shots and headkicks which were my strong points anyway.

    Ive been training muay thai for a year now, ive had shark tanks, hard sparring, and many many light rounds. People have started asking me when im gonna fight and my coach has talked about booking me one but its fell through both times due to things out of both of our control. I would love to fight but the doubt/ nerves are a big factor. Ive been working on conditioning alot to get my mind there. When im hard sparring im not getting dropped by anyone other than the pros around my gym and even thats getting rarer (granted if those guys wanted to kill me they would 😂). Ive seen people who are around the same skill level or same timeframe as me who compete and some win some loose i think ive just gotta pull the plug and send it soon. Glad gabe said being nervous is a good sign 😂.

    This thing about being "nervous" about a fight I have already heard from another profighter, but I am not convinced. Unfortunately when I fight I suffer from a lot of performance anxiety, and it has always limited me. Those few times when for one reason or another I was not nervous I got exceptional performance. I guess it is very subjective.

    Great video Gabriel...nowadays we are more sensible about fighting and although it happens, it isn't as usual as it was in the past that people who weren't ready were fighting.
    When I started fighting in 09, we were trained for a month and then it was a fight. So you either won, lost respectably and/or were destroyed and never fought again.

    I was also competed in taekwondo since 6th grade.n retired from taekwondo in 2008 after I won my 2nd gold medal. then I do muaythai cus while I was still doing taekwondo I also train boxing so I already familiar with boxing stance, footwork, body n head movements n pivoting to increase my power punches. n just a suggestion my fellow taekwondo fighters train boxing it will give you additional footwork in to your taekwondo steps n pivot to the angle your opponents will not see it coming. will make video on that just wait. back to muaythai I trained for about 1 year and I learn fast. the differents is the conditioning to the legs. I'm not use to take leg kick in taekwondo so for the earliest hard sparring I always fall or hurt when talking leg kick. so my coach decide that i have extra exercise to strengthen my legs. squad etc. and 50 leg kicks per leg at the end of every training. after couple.of months my legs muscle harden n i can take leg kicks now. it took about 1+ years till my 1st muaythai fight n i won. cus I'm better than my opponents and I spare with all.the champions in my gym. Gabriel is right when you soare spare with some one who better skilled than you. automatically you will get to his level. n always ask after the sparing to your sparring partners what to improve n what I done wrong in the sparring. a good champion will not keep his secrets at least my team mate. they always give advice you should do this n that n write it. that's important when you write it it will stick in your mind

    I'm doing Excellent in sparring for someone who's having 3rd-4th month, having ticked all things you're pointing out in video. My coach asked me for the first fight (inter club sparring) it's something here where all new guys spar from other club branches. However in my first sparring(inter club) I got so nervous that my mind was absolutely blank, I lost 3 of 3 fights to TKO(domination, I wasn't getting struck, I was slipping all punches but wasn't hitting back due to nervousness)

    I had my first amateur muay thai fight (with elbows) in November and one thing that really surprised me is how quickly you get gassed as compared to even hard sparring. 2 min rounds during a fight feels 10x longer than 3 min rounds of sparring lol

    • @oneinchpunched3661
      @oneinchpunched3661 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Im a beginner but that is my number one fear in a potential future fight. To gas out like never before really quickly. I know all you can do is to keep cardio at a high level. But I think the main reason for gassing out like never before in fights are simply because of the pressure/fear that keeps one from breathing properly as in sparring, and a potential adrenalin dump after all the build up before the bell rings.

    • @Alderak1
      @Alderak1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind, he’s talking about your first fight.
      That being said, many pros talk about being nervous before every fight. Anxiety is a powerful emotion, whether its performance anxiety, competitive anxiety, impostor syndrome, or anxiety about taking hard hits and getting hurt. You’re doing yourself a disservice not utilizing such emotions in your training and before a fight to keep you alert. In any case, I think he’s making a general statement, that if you aren’t nervous before a fight (or before your first fight) then perhaps you aren’t well educated on the stakes at hand, or haven’t properly internalized the stakes.

    Been training over a decade now. Various arts. Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Wrestling, and BJJ are the ones I have spent the most time in. I guess in reality, I'm a true mixed martial artist, but I have never stepped in a ring or the cage. I spar consistently every week however, 2-3 times minimum (boxing & kickboxing). At 31 I am just now hoping to get matched up for my first ammy Kickboxing match. I figure I got maybe 3-4 years left to make a solid run & I want to set realistic goals for myself. I don't expect myself to compete at a national level let alone an international level, I think that train has left the station already. But I would like to make a name for myself regionally at least. So my question is, with my age factored in, what are some realistic goals I can set for myself, since I am just now taking the leap into competition. Anyone is welcome to reply with their thoughts, I am honestly hoping to come away from this comment with a good sense of what to expect for myself. Also, as someone with colon problems, what do you think I should be eating for proper nutrition, so that I can perform adequately.

      What's body rounds? What's hard sparring? And would it be so bad if actual children were involved in them? How? What would be cinsidered tough and challenging yet still avceptable vs wtf this is actual child abuse? Stamp Fairtex was around 5 years old or younger when she started Muay Thai (to defend herself against violent bullies) and when she was around or under 9 years old she beat all the girls at the gym meaning she had to go against the boys, whom she also beat. And there are some other fighters that started out very young like this and even went to competitions for money at around 10 years old, whether it's slightly under or over.

      How are they wasting time banging you? Isn't that sparring then? And how does holding pads help with body conditioning? Also when you say body conditioning, are you talking about making your body durable and making yourself feel less pain like in shin and knuckle conditioning or are you talking about like conditioning as in strength and conditioning? I hear and see the word conditioning used for more than one meaning so I can't help but think "which one?".
