Of all the knife videos I have seen, this is probably one of the best, logical, unbiased, more informative reviews. Great work.

It proves having both is a great idea. I use the Cara Cara most days and it’s a banger. The Endura stays inside til I have something where I need something heavy duty. Both are equally as liked in my collection. I only but the FRN Byrd knives though. I love how tactical they are and also the thinness versus strength is unreal. Byrd does a great heat treat and uses Spyderco FRN. For $35 it’s hard to beat. Id get a RAT 1 if I needed a heavier duty budget blade.

Great " in the hands comparison " I carry my frn cara cara 2 every day as a contractor since 2013 and my other 4 or 5 knives stay at home since then .One of the things I appreciate, is the blade length in food preparation . And youare also right in the sharpening frequency.

+Bernardo H Thanks! The Cara Cara 2 FRN is a really good knife and you are right, it's just about perfect for food prep.

I always carry the Cara Cara over the Endura and I think it’s cause it’s thinner. Easier to carry and has that forward choil which is great at work stuff like cutting straps and plastic off pallets.

I love the choil on the bottom side and carry it daily. I would like to have one that holds a edge better. Does spyderco have a knife that is identical to the cara with better steel?

I just ordered a Cara Cara 2 (grey) FRN and by Amazons pricing I dont see the $50 difference from the Cara Cara 2 ($31) and the Spyderco Endura 4 FRN ($87.50), dont get me wrong the Endura is a great looking knife, but so is the Cara Cara 2 for $31 ! If I want something smaller I will carry my Spyderco Astute ! Great review thanks.

You are right, Zel, in noting that hot spot, which is the first 'point' along the lower surface of the FRN handle of the Endura which lies between between the fingers. It is by no means a deal breaker in my own case -- I am really enjoying my V-Toku2 Endura -- but at some point down the line, I may work on that first little set of peaks a bit to soften the contour.
What I want to bring to everyone's attention is that the thickness of the FRN material surrounding the steel liners along the slightly depressed surface contour *immediately aft* of the pointy hot spot is already the "thickest" the FRN gets for any stretch of length along the lower edges, for holding onto and surrounding the skeletonized steel liner plates (it's *less* thick elsewhere); and the peaks in question consist of *additional* solid material protruding a bit further out from those supporting liners. This suggests strongly that filing back the small peaks which may be bothersome to some should in no way compromise the strength or durability of the handles. Just don't get carried away or try this if you don't have the suitable skills and the patience to proceed slowly, checking your work regularly as you go.
If any EDC folder in the marketplace can be called, on balance, "unique"... then the Endura 4 must be considered a candidate for that designation. So if this combination of features appeals, I think the minor surgical modification is worth the effort on some rainy Saturday afternoon. FYI.
P.S.- Your original review of the Endura 4 is very much on point, Zel (thanks!)... especially your demonstration of the *very* fast deployment of that long blade which is possible with the Endura, even *without* employing the usual Spydie-flick techniques (which also work well). In my experience, it's the best in this particular respect among all my Spyderco lightweights (the Native 5 is weakest), which really helps endear the big (but just 3.27 ounce) Endura 4 to me. It's down to geometry here, I think.

+Michigan edge I'm with you on the Cara Cara 2 it's a much better feel than the Endura 4, however I really like the Delica 4 and prefer it over the Meadowlark 2. You can't really go wrong with any of them.

Still, the many collective upsides to the Endura 4 make it worth the difference in price, including some difference in carry weight and a lot if you go G10 version of the Cara Cara 2 to match up better presentation-wise (there, I must assume, a consequent advantage to balance in hand would come into play for the Endura). My bias on the latter -- I'm big, personally (not necessarily categorically), on saving those fractions of an ounce and balance in hand. I have seen a new Endura 4's price listed for as low as $57 on the Wal-Mart website (black FRN only) within the past nine months. And clean, lightly used Enduras turn up on a certain auction site pretty much any week you look and sell for about that same price figure, as well. It's pretty easy to score one this way, and that's a bargain.
BTW, the ricasso + forward point of the handle on the Endura work absolutely fine for *me* as a forward finger choil, giving the Endura with its significantly longer cutting edge length the distinct *advantage* over the Cara Cara 2 in this regard.

@ Blazin'Blades... I would tend to disagree that VG-10 is "not that much better" than 8CR13mov for those who know how to maintain a keen [? -- see below] edge for a long time on a VG-10 Endura with the small effort of regular maintenance by some light stropping. Nero Knives here on TH-cam has posted a graphic demonstration of this, and many others have reported a similar experience.
I would conjecture that 8CR13mov would not normally take the same kind of *very* keen edge as *near optimally heat treated and quenched* VG-10 at all (? -- not sure)... or as easily... or for as long°° [?! -- see below]. I cannot comment personally on some complaints you see (including Zel's) about Spyderco's *particular* handling of its VG-10! There is a reason, surely, VG-10 is so favored over Chinese 8CR13mov among fine kitchen knife enthusiasts... and the latter's corrosion resistance, I think, can be distinctly inferior if you are in circumstances where that may matter.
°° Zel thinks I'm off base there irrespective of those carefully worded qualifications! Well, I definitely have to defer on the basis of experience, no problem. Higher HRC might do something more for the VG-10, apparently.
[Disclosure: My Camillus sailor's knife is titanium carbonitride VG-10 & my Stretch 2 example, "as new" & not carried, is VG-10 (that's it For VG-10 in my current collection -- VG-1 on a C.S. Pendleton Mini Hunter); my Endura 4 is V-Toku2 & my favored original Stretch is ZDP-189.]

The Endura is much better in terms of quality as the Byrd is part of Spydercos budget line and the Endura is part of the quality line

    • @Zelrick42
      @Zelrick42  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

That is correct. However the build quality difference is not vast. The Byrd line is surprisingly well done. The biggest difference is handle contouring and blade steel. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
