Sounds like a chunk is cut out in the middle... is it something to do with the lyrics? It’s goes towards a somewhat sinister topic at times. Maybe it went a bit too far?
I don't care much for Ace of Base, but I could have been a Tech Noir fan. There's a lot of untapped potential in their early sound, and I'd love to hear the uncut version of this song. Shame Jonas & co. decided to take the band down the safe, unoffensive, progressively generic route.
I agree completely. I'd choose this over their "uplifting" pop songs (Life Is A Flower etc) in a minute. The middle ground would have been perfect though (like All That She Wants or Happy Nation, still pop but with that nice reggae rhythm, and not uplifting or preachy).
i think they didnt choose it on purpose. it has happened naturally. they have versatile taste in music anyway so when All that she wants came out, it showed them new direction. also there was no point in staying in this New Beat (techno) sound for much longer. whole music scene was changing rapidly and you cant get much out of New Beat (tech noir sound) beyond one or two albums.
Hard to tell exactly how much of that was the band's decision and how much was the changing music scene & pressure from record companies. The first AOB album retained elements of the Tech Noir sound. Later ones they were a bit torn trying to keep various record labels happy (e.g. the American label didn't want them to sound too Euro).
I would overall agree. I preferred their more aggro songs on “The Sign”. I also really like the song “Hypnotised” from when they were Tech Noir. Also the early demo version of “Living in Danger” is amazing.
Hidden gems has a lot more stuff like this on it especially 2nd half of volume 2. First album and the bridge are total classics, genius stuff. Easy to judge them
