- I’m thinking we’ll have to give Indiana Harbor the title of Drama Queen for 2023, she made more memorable, grand entrances and exits than any other vessel last year it seems.
A moody looking, windy Early December night made the perfect backdrop for Indiana Harbor as she cut through the canal into the harbor! With her incredibly bright spotlight beaming through the mist, it was an incredible sight. With the ship unloaded, light and sitting high in the water, it probably took all the crew’s skill to pull her through the canal safely in the strong winds, but she surfed through without incident and looked spectacular doing it.
The Queen of Cargo arriving in Duluth on December 7th, 2023 for iron ore pellets. The current world record holder for freshwater cargo loads, this ship is a fairly regular visitor to the Twin Ports, averaging one or two trips a month, and always seems to have a flair for the dramatic when entering and exiting the harbor.
This is indeed a very impressive entry into port, no doubt to the relief of the crew. Always great to hear the horns as they blast into the silence of the night. Thank you for this fine video, we really appreciate it.
That's awesome, Jonathan. Love the light beams. Night videos are the coolest. 👍😀🍁
Thank you! The spotlights are always really fun to see at night, the beams are really impressive
Great video! Big ship coming in with spotlight and horn. Awesome!
I love how they shine the spotlight on the crowd. Very cool arrival (literally & figuratively) 😀
Lights, camera, action and the Indiana Harbor comes rolling through. Capt and crew are doing a great job of holding her steady in the wind. The turn is spot on. Thanks for the view, Jonathan ⚓️🚢⚓️
No problem! They definitely had some challenges here but they did it as flawlessly as ever!
Good catch here! I live 180 east of Duluth, we had HIGH WINDS all night, just now subsiding a bit! Stay well all!!😊😊😊
😁 Nah the ships are in layup right now, this was filmed over two months ago sadly, been saving up videos for the off season! But yes very similar conditions, actually feels like Winter again
I’m starting to think this ship loves inclement weather. Cool video!
Lol I’m thinking so too 😂 Just like the Barker, these guys like turning their passages into events, either with their horn or going through during interesting weather rather than waiting it out
Great video of that night time arrival in the strong wind that seems off Lake Superior pushing this ship through
the channel under the bridge and into the safety of the harbor.
It looks cold. But, this winter seems much warmer than normal.
The great lakes are much warmer than many winters of the past. It seems the great lakes are near 5% or less frozen over.
I lived in Milwaukee, WI in the winter of 1978 - 1979 when Lake Michigan froze completely over with ice. It was a very cold winter. I believe we may have had over 90 days of temps always under freezing at 32 degrees F.
We had so much snow in the Milwaukee area the national guard was brought in to clear cars from the roads. Cars were towed out of the snow covered streets and "stacked" in the city impound yards.
I had to travel to school at U of W Milwaukee from Wauwatosa to the west of the city. I took the bus every day to avoid driving in the city and getting stuck in the heavy uncleared snow. The busses kept running on the main roadways of the Milwaukee area.
I never had any trouble traveling in the Milwaukee area on the city busses they were not expensive and usually running on time from 6am to after midnight.
90 days of under -32, yikes! Yeah this winter has been WAY warmer than normal. Warm enough where you really can’t even call it winter, not sure what this is but it’s not right.
I have family in Milwaukee, know it quite well! Beautiful city, not sure how it compares to how it was in the 70s
Hello Johnathan,
It was below 32 F degrees not -32 degrees.
All the streets in the suburbs were just packed snow into ice.
Because it was so packed snow and so cold it was not as slippery as melting snow or ice that is very slippery.
I grew up about 120 miles further in north east Wisconsin. Growing up further north we were used to long colder winters as children and young adults.
Living in Ventura county of Southern California is much nicer in winter than Wisconsin or Duluth, MN.

Thanks. Jonathan...I needed that! Starting to snow again here in Boulder.
No problem, glad you enjoyed!
Just noticed the nice little doghouse on the bow, it would be a rough 4-hour watch there in rough weather.
Great piece. Was that a north wind?💨💨💨💨
Northeast wind, which is usually when things get interesting here in Duluth, the way the lake is angled in our area!
Odd winter up there. Don’t see any ice..
Well I filmed this 2 months ago but yeah… it honestly doesn’t really matter because it still looks like this, incredibly strange winter for sure
When did this happen?
This is an older video, December 7th
