  • Kalaripayattu (sometimes shortened as Kalari) is an Indian martial art and fighting system that originated in modern-day Kerala. There is also mention a form of Kalaripayattu called Tulunadan Kalari in the Northern ballads of the Chekavar in the Malabar region. Kalaripayattu is held in high regard due by martial artists due to it's long-standing history within Indian martial arts. It is believed to be the oldest surviving martial art in India. It also is considered to be among the oldest martial arts still in existence, with its origin in the martial arts timeline dating back to at least the 3rd century BCE.

I read in the comments that this should be required in all India schools. But, I feel every country would benefit with having a martial arts with discipline and meditation to the schools.

I wonder if they practice only for public showcase or if they do some form of sparring. I think they are fine athletes but some attacks and blocking before the attack begins are kinda meh. However I love all martial arts and hope that kalari will prosper.. Greetings from swordsmen of europe.

It is only a showcase of kalarippayattu, in real life we can't show it like this, it won't be entertaining and people will get bored. YOu can consider it as a choreographed fight like in movies, can we use the moves we see in movies in real life we can't right? When you watch closely you can see both are aiming or intentionally striking their opponent's weapons and each know where the next strike would be. I don't know about them, my guru always told me that even if you know where the next strike would be, you only block it at the last moment so the opponent can't change his moves in the middle. In Kerala most of the gurus only teach you choreographed fights, but when you press them to teach you the real thing. You show dedication they will teach you real kalarippayattu, where they show you how to use the art in real life and include sparring but they don't use any protective gear so expect quite a lot of injuries. Movies ruined real martial arts, and people's expectation has changed, so as they are doing a show their first duty is to entertain crowds, this show is taking place at a tourist spot and most of the viewers are not at all interested in martial arts, so no harm done right.
