    This is why Frank is a very beloved character. People didn't see what the show was trying to do with the docks storyline at first, and felt betrayed when the show pulled away from the projects, especially in a time when you could not binge on shows (the Wire only began being popular when the DVDs came out), but it all ties up beautifully.
    Also, it says something that the Greek is the only character David Simon admits to having written as an allegory. He represents "capitalism unchecked ", amoral, unfeeling, uncaring, with no nation and no loyalty, unassuming and barely noticeable when it walks
    among you. Always loved the fact that he's there for a full episode and a half and multiple scenes of rhe diner before he reveals himself to the viewers.
    As for his connection to the FBI, the show gives us precedent, when last season the FBI eanted ro flip Avon and Stringer into informants. Koutris is now on counterterrorism ,so it's likely he turns a blind eye to the Greek's organisation in exchange for tips on any possible terrorist activity. Everyone climbing that career ladders.
    Now saddle up, because as good as 1 and 2 were, 3 and 4 are widely credited as being the show at its absolute peak

      Also, the final song is sung by Steve Earle, the guy who played Bubs sponsor Waylon in season 1. He's a very working class singer, which makes him a natural fit for the season's theme.

    I think most fans of the show agree with you about Pablo Schreiber.
    You know who I wish we got more of, though? The guy who played Louis Sobotka (Nick’s dad). Not a big character but I feel like that actor did a really solid job in the few scenes he was in.

    Still to this day, the hotel scene with the Greek, where Vondas says, "...but the water just coughed him back up", gives me a chill. It has an almost biblical tone to it. A man who gave his life to the harbour, and the harbour gives him back to his people. Can't believe we're on to season 3 already. Sheeeeeeeeeiiiiit.

    This pretty much ends the focus on the people who work the docks. But if you pay attention throughout the rest of the show, you'll occasionally see some familiar faces from this season.

  • @manzell

    Nicky's angry scenes are very anime-style. I think he did good overall. Having to act next to Chris Bauer who *IS* Frank Sobaka has got to be tough. For all I could tell they just went down and guerilla filmed an actual dock foreman for the role and he never knew he was on camera. And Ziggy well... He's so up and down and that matches James Ronsone's personality so well, the bar was a bit lower for him. He also had a few very rough moments early in the season and noticeable improved towards the end. He's one of my favorite characters. I also HIGHLY recommend Generation Kill, which is also by David Simon (and stars Ransone) and explores many of the same themes as the Wire, but from the perspective of invading Iraq.

    The Koutris thing was confusing to me at first too and I think trips up a lot of viewers…he technically wasn’t “dirty” at all. He was working in counterterrorism, which at the time was the absolute highest priority for the FBI. High enough that if he had an informant like the Greek giving him useful information on other criminal organizations that have more involvement in weapons/terrorism/etc, he’d be able to do pretty much whatever he wanted to keep them out of prison, even if other / lesser folks in the FBI didn’t know anything about it. Even if it results in people like Frank being killed.
    There wasn’t any risk of him getting “caught” because what he was doing was probably totally sanctioned at the highest levels of the FBI. That’s why Fitz said that if word got out he was talking about it he would be fired or transferred to the middle of nowhere or something.

    • @MarcillaSmith
      @MarcillaSmith 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People might look at this aspect and think the writers are just being "anti-po po" or something, but I can tell you that this is no exaggeration.
      I got picked up in 2006 for traffic king - nothing as big as depicted with the Greeks, but enough to be labeled "traffic king" - and the first thing the DEA wanted to talk about was putting me back in business. Oh, didn't I mention that? Yeah, they only moved in to arrest _after_ I tried shutting down to move on to something legit.
      It's like Carver says about how you can't even call it a wore because "wores end." The ones who are supposed to be bringing it to an end don't want it to end, they want to control it to use it to their benefit.
      But try talking like that to most people and they act like you're wearing a ten foil chapeau :: eye roll ::

    • @banyarling
      @banyarling 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree completely. When the Greeks joke to Nicky about the chemicals being for "big scary terrorist bombs," they're indirectly telling us why they are protected by Koutris and the highest levels of the FBI.
      The Greeks' control of criminal flows keeps real WMD terrorist shit from coming in, while in exchange they are allowed to profit off lesser crimes like drugs and human trafficking. Note the contrast between the lowest level WMDs, the Barksdale low quality heroin that will "mass destruct yo ass," and the real WMDs.
      To quote a future episode: There's games beyond the game.

    There's one thing I just picked up recently after so many rewatches. In ep9, they already give you the info that Koutris is in Washington. Initially you might think he traveled from SD to Baltimore to talk with the Greek in person, but when Koutris shows up the the docks for the drug seizure, he's introduced as "Koutris of the FBI down in Washington" but it's such seemingly unimportant dialogue that it often goes unnoticed.

    Elie it’s a shame how slow you were to pick up on Ghetto talk and lingo. When Stringer went to see Avon it had nothing to do with Mouzone getting shot or Stringer backdoor deal with the towers. The Clip was about how dumb Stringer was going to the Hospital in the first place. Contract Hitter dealt with Distance and no contact. Second He not Bmore or Westside. Next offering assistance? A hitter handles his own business.
    Rep and Name is in Question, this has to be addressed
    By “Mouzone”. And Mouzone throwing bait “THEM” out there and Stringer biting like a fool. If Mouzone thought of respecting him after that, think not.

  • @BruceJohnson-om5kl
    @BruceJohnson-om5kl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Elie, that statement was just for Avon. Avon is good he has nothing to worry about from him.
    But Mouzone tested Stringer by saying "THEM" this confused him, that's when Mouzone knew Stringer
    had something to do with Sending Omar.
    And way would you say to a Hittas " You no who was it so we can hit back" first Mouzone was recruited because you have no muscle, And asking him a question like that is insulting.
    Stringer is one of the Walking Dead. Drug dealers deal with other dealers. If you're not about causing Death don't mess with killers.

    Yassssssssssss Elie! Now onto Season 3, my personal favorite season of the 5 and is peak Wire imho. As good and rightfully terrific Seasons 1 and 2 are, 3 is the ultimate bow on it all. A few things that have been pointed out to me in recent years in this particular episode is that Frank's body being found near the docks and surrounded by his people is akin to that of a funeral and the closing shot on Nick's tattoo being the end of the montage. It's the symbol for Pi. Clay Davis is assisting the city developers (The one who pushed Valchek into following his suspicions on the docks) into making more condominiums on the grounds of where people used to work earning a living which was the fate that Frank was actively trying to avoid and keep the docks in business. This is why I stated to keep in mind how much money Frank was giving Clay. All that money for nothing smfh. The devil of politics I promise you. Season 2 is legit great television and pushes the portrait that the series is making even further.

  • @harrystinefelt8765
    @harrystinefelt8765 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As you move into season three, you'll meet actual players in Baltimore history. The guy who plays deacon is who Avon is based off of. Bunny's lieutenant is the real Jay Landsman who auditioned to play himself but wasn't Jay Landsman enough to play himself. Mayor Kurt Schmoke(who considered Colvin's idea in real life) plays a small role late in the season.
    As season 3 focuses on politics and bureaucracy know that the 1st district has historically been the most powerful and persuasive district on the city council. Tommy's storyline is loosely based on former mayor Martin O'Malley's rise through the ranks for city councilman to mayor to governor.
