Context of aria within the plot: Don José is ordered to watch for Carmen after she's arrested for attacking a woman in the cigarette factory. Carmen sings about going to her friend Lillias Pastia's inn to dance and have a good time. She says that times are better in company of a lover, insinuating to Don José that he could be her new lover.
