You should try floral wire vs the steel rod. You can use wrapping wire too especially if you put tiny notches in the aluminum near bottom. Once you complete it... flex it all out and bend into a natural shape including the stem. I use to make flowers from various things as a kid including cans... in..the 1970s. Lol.. yup

Those are not leaves they are sepals called calyx and it is one piece
