How did 1200 people give this a thumbs down? One of the BEST covers I’ve ever heard. They truly make the song their own without losing the essence of the original. For me that’s what makes a great cover.
When I was 20 years old I went to jail for 10 months. About 2 months in, you guys were on some special on some night time news show. I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote down like “late street drive” or something.. when I finally got out I looked you guys up, been a fan ever since haha. I’m 24 now!!! This was the first video I saw by you guys! Hope to see you live in concert soon
I did not discover Mary J Blige in jail but I heard No More Drama the first time one night sitting in St. Louis County Jail early in my 3.5 month stay... ugh. THAT was a lifetime ago
^^Truth^^ The one big central mic capturing all of their voices makes them so vulnerable to surrounding noise. Additional plus RP's voice without reverb.
Just found this video, and that is the first thing I noticed. Great sound, no wind noise or street noise. Must have been early in the morning on a Sunday, or they managed to control street access from three directions! Nicely done.
Watched a few videos of live performances now, and I have to say that despite the gorgeous and talented lead singer out front, I think the bass player is the heart of this band. She is so damn good.
tofumar Couldn't agree more. Bridget is a fabulous player and adds so much to making their sound unique. But really they are the very definition of 'a band' (and a very good band). they simply work so well together with the whole being greater than the sum of the individual parts. Pop royalty.
Joseph Armand +tofumar Aso - while I certainly agree the upright bass playing ala Bridget is a master class in syncopation _ and Rachel's vocal's a gemstone aural delight _ lets not discount the absolute tastiness of the drummer's licks {as minimal as they be, they are dead on - 'in the pocket' - cool} _ nor the solo virtuosity of the horn players contrapuntal comping - not to downplay to mention the delioso-ness of their combined vocal harmonies - me too thinks the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Watched this video in middle school, maybe fourth or fifth grade, and I’m in university now and find myself coming back to this video every once in a while. Love it.
No autotune here. Just pure, amazing voices and smooth harmony. They sound better on the street than a lot of bands sound on stage with a full battery of equipment and electronics. True talent. I agree that the music definitely has an old school NOLA sound. The harmonies remind me of the '40s (Andrew Sisters, etc.) sound. Rachael's voice reminds me of some of the fabulous girl groups of the '60s. All in all a great sound for me. Love them.
my2cents2u this music is the best new music I've heard in years. I'm a classic rock fan & I love older music as well. I love this band. I would love to see them in concert. My first thought about this They are nothing short of amazing. ✌🐸media3.giphy.com/media/3o84TS77nKHEGh0aTS/200w. Lake Street Dive is as magical as they come especially for newer music... The very first newest band that I will honestly call Magical.
They formed at NEC, one of the best music conservatories in the world. Their talent and musical skill combined is better than probably 1000 Top "pop" artists put together. lol.
Every time I watch or listen to music from these four, I am baffled as to why they are not Setting the world on fire. These four are simply amazing together. Whoever says new music is Crap, Stale, over produced, To Pop, Flavor of the week oriented or Manufactured sounding etc... Hasn't heard LSD! P.S. Just saw Rachel performing with Jorma & Jack @ Lockn' 15 = Amazing!
+GDTRFBBB I agree with you. They are amazing and it's a no brainer that they should be a huge hit worldwide. Unfortunately many critics and music executives have this weird thing about people recording cover tunes. They'd rather have "new" original songs. I heard a great quote about 25 years ago that can be applied to a lot of today's "new, original" overproduced, overpaid, over PR'd band "The music is good and original. Unfortunately the good parts are not original and the original parts aren't good." Imagine the Justin Biebers and Milo's and Britney's performing and recording without reverb, vocal effects processors, auto-tune, and other things used to make average vocalists sound like big stars. It would be a total yawn. Lake Street Dive is actually too good to be as huge as Justin Bieber. etc. (also the fact that 50-75% of the listening audience has poor taste, a tin ear for listening, most of them settle for the lowest quality. They steer the market and drag it down so that the entertainment consuming market is dragged down to the lowest possible common denominator. If you look at "pop music" as food, most people these days want junk food: something that's just okay, not great, not bad, just okay. Lake Street Dive: If I won a huge lottery, I'd love to sponsor them so that they would ever have to consider selling out(not to sleezeball music producers, not doing a jingle for McD's, The Gap, Walmart, Coca-Cola, etc.). That same sponsorship would reward them well enough that they would not have to charge money for people to come to hear them in concert.
+Hunter Mann Thanks man. Or Mann. I couldn't agree more with everything you and GDTRFBBB have said. Lake Street Dive have more talent in their little toes than all those concept artists? combined. They may not win any Grammies. Unless, of course, that as-h-le rapper allows them to.
In todays music era, you have to search for this. Unfortunately this doesn't get top 40 airplay to gets to create awareness. Music like this is so soulful that R&B stations would've played it back in the day. Very Boz Scaggs, Hall &Oats, Bobby Caldwell...Etc. Great Music!
First time I heard this group I could tell that they had a jazz and classical background. They have really learned their craft and it shows in the great harmonies and musicianship. A fun, hip, eclectic sound created by real musicians. If you search long and hard enough, you can still find some great new music out there. Lake Street Dive is IT!
Hyperbole much, dude? She's good, but easy on that. I'm sure that Bridget would agree. Try looking up Meshell Ndegeocello, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, and Oscar Pettiford as a start to a much larger world...
This never gets old !!! Mesmerizing performance. Rachel is flat out gorgeous (especially in this video), the laid back groove, the perfect vocal harmonies and fat/warm trumpet playing ! I’m a picky mofo when it comes to music but this is a perfect performance and a clever/fresh cover.
What a beautiful arrangement & performance! I like the vocal trio, harmony style & choice of instruments, it works so well! One of the things that appeals to me about this group is that they are unplugged, acoustic, no artificial flavors or special effects. I could listen to this dozens of times and never tire of it. It was an instant classic when the Jackson 5 first sang it, and it is truly one of those songs with longevity. Bravo!
One of my favourite songs of all time is this version. I sing it constantly. Never ever sick of it. SO GOOD. I just wrote this exact comment on “What I’m Doing Here” Because both. x2. So. Much. Soul.
She mesmerizes me every time. The support is equally spot on. Love y’all and cheers for bringing joy to us from here in bfe Ohio during this covid crisis.

Listening to performers like this makes me believe there is actually a probability of music-based art in this universe. Thank you and keep up the good work! I could not have wished for more!
You guys are such a breath of fresh air!! Love the sound the energy and soul that you all bring to life. I hope you all stick together. That bass player!!! And Rachael you and your voice are so beautiful MJ would be so proud of this cover. COME TO DENVER! please
Hi All, My wife and I are attending Lake Street Dive's concert in Minneapolis this Saturday September 28, 2024. I can honestly claim that I am one of their earliest fans. I remember sitting at my work desk in 2022 and seeing something about a band called Lake Street Dive. I thought that they must be a Minneapolis band named after Lake Street in Minneapolis. I was close. They are a Massachusetts-based band named after Lake Street in Minneapolis. I watched this video shortly after it was posted on TH-cam and thought they would be big. I was right, for a change. I have been a fan ever since. I don't understand why they have not won multiple Grammys.
I thought it was a great throwback to the Jackson Five song and the sound quality on a street corner only says that they are extremely talented. I heard this band for the first time tonight. The bass player plays with an intensity that I love and the talent is spread throughout the band, but what I loved the most was that the lead singer completely understands that her voice is an instrument. Well done!
Man, that groove, them vocals, that bass.. pfff.. just blew me away.. 🥳 One of the best renditions I've seen of a great Jackson 5 song! Beautiful! Chapeau! 👍

YES!!!...I couldn't find this for the longest time and then after hearing "Good Kisser" on 88.5 for the first time and then a quick search I am home again! Just as I remembered it, just couldn't place the band or the title. A sweet mixture of joy and fulfillment and seeing something "old" as new again...Thank you!!!
I just love this band. The most talented quartet I've ever heard. I've been playing in bands for 50 years and Lake Street Dive just takes me to another place. It must be the honest talent. Did I mention that I'm a fan ?
excellent! thumbs up! just heard you on prairie home companion, 10.15.16. fantastic bass player! the trumper wow! drummer, yeap and the fabulous pretty blues vocalist lady yall. tremendous!
ever since i heard you on NPR ive been listening nonstop. thank you thank you... my ears, heart and smile cannot stop listening! hope to make it out to san diego soon.
Here's the think about great music; I am in my mid 50's and just freaked out at how cool this sounded, my daughter (30) said Dad you gotta hear it, she was told by a 20+ year old friend about the Boston street video. When music is this good, its for everybody.
Great music is great music. Great musicians are great musicians, no matter what the era. I've made it into the next decade after you and am totally taken by this band. Rachael is astounding, but the blend of talents is yet another level.
2024 anyone? One of the best re-imagined covers, EVER.
Great song, awesome cover. Live or no.
This group should be bigger
It's so good.
Love you madly cover by Dan Mangan is incredible. I love the band Cake but Dan's version is incredible
It’s honestly perfect.
This video blew me away in 2012, here we are in 2022 and it still has the same effect.

Haha same here man. I downloaded this and put it as as an mp3 on my phone because of how amazing this cover was
love how bridget adds a little ad lib near the end and Rachel smiles when she notices. Just shows how they're all vibing well together.
SAAAAME it's so cute
All these years and this video never gets old.
Still true
This group makes me feel that creativity is abundant and available to those who seek it. I love this group!
Every once in a while, I have to un-like this song just so I can like it again.
Lol, just did that again as well
Aww damn!

They were jealous that they didn't have an ounce of the talent needed to pull this off.
Surely their finger slipped and hit the wrong button.

I'm not sure how anyone on the street could just walk by! I'd stand and listen - mesmerized! Amazing.

This group is so talented. They should better on a street corner that most groups sound in a studio. Rachael Price has such an amazing voice.
Just when you think music can't get any better.. it does.
You made this song all your own .Great job.
This literally one of my favorite things to watch, Such a great performance. Two years later and I still get chills!
I just love this band. The most talented quartet I've ever heard. I've been playing in bands for 50 years and Lake Street Dive just takes me to another place. It must be the honest talent. Did I mention that I'm a fan ?
Her voice is amazing. Lake Street Dive can take their sound in so many directions.
My dance instructor plays this song while we stretch and I love this soo much I've been trying to find this for weeks!!!

Like, each time I hear she singing.
Oh, my, god.
Dedoduro Admin I understand you 100%
Here's the think about great music; I am in my mid 50's and just freaked out at how cool this sounded, my daughter (30) said Dad you gotta hear it, she was told by a 20+ year old friend about the Boston street video. When music is this good, its for everybody.
Great music is great music. Great musicians are great musicians, no matter what the era. I've made it into the next decade after you and am totally taken by this band. Rachael is astounding, but the blend of talents is yet another level.
Wow! beautiful
One of the best songs, as well as rendition of the song, of all time. Magnificent.
Damn cant believe its been 7 years since I've heard this, feels like it was just yesterday. Man time flies by so fast.
