One thing to remember, the drivers used to sling these cars around this track with NO POWER STEERING. Power steering wouldn't be introduced until 1981. Just proves that these drivers were total badasses.
@@towhee89 absolutely, those old big, boxy cars were heavy and not easy to handle. Then to think that they drove with no gloves, no cool suit, in the heat of the summer, if that doesn't prove they were athletes, I don't know what does
Look how young Mike Joy is. When did he start announcing? I am starting to believe they had a microphone in his crib announcing races because every time I think I found the youngest video of Joy... I find one even younger.
He was just starting his education here. By Daytona 2020 he was an expert at stretching those lips all the way out of the broadcast booth and into the Presidential limo to kiss Donald Trump's ass. He's from New England but I don't consider him a New Englander. This guy is as Southern Fried as Jerry Jones or Richard Petty.
*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1980 VIRGINIA 500 (9 of 31):* #2 Dale Earnhardt (1256 points with 2 wins, Chevrolet) #15 Bobby Allison (-73, Ford) #43 Richard Petty (-109 with 1 win, Chevrolet) #88 Darrell Waltrip (-122 with 2 wins, Chevrolet) #11 Cale Yarborough (-169 with 1 win, Chevrolet) #47 Harry Gant (-217, Chevrolet) #71 Dave Marcis (-143, Chevrolet) #90 Jody Ridley (-262, Chevrolet) #27 Benny Parson (-285, Chevrolet) Meanwhile, Richard Childress (Chevrolet) was 11th. Despite his great 1979 season, Joe Millikan (Chevrolet) had to scale down to a partial schedule for 1980. Buddy Baker (Chevrolet) won the Daytona 500 while David Pearson won the Southern 500 after taking over the Chevrolet #1 Donnie Allison used to race.
GM teams used the Chevy Monte Carlo at most tracks and Olds Cutlass 442 at Talladega. If you look you will see different Chevy models in use. Most are Monte Carlos, but Harry Gantt (47) is a Caprice, while 74 and 99 are Chevelles. Bobby Allison (15) was running a Thunderbird, but there were a couple of Torinos in the field.
Started to watch it, but got a 15 sec ad at the beginning and 3:37 so I am just going to stop before I get any further in and have to watch 15 through the 45 min video.
I get costs were an issue with tires, but so is blowing out a tire or finishing worse because you pit under green and lose laps and get a bad break with the yellow.
Less than halfway through & only 6 cars on the lead lap. If that were the case today. Every single person who complains about how much better Nascar used to be, would throw a fit about how unfair it was.
Maybe the newer fan's would, but us older fan's understood back then that the driver's faced much more than just racing the other car's/driver's/team's. They faced REAL DANGER of physical harm/death, plus it was extremely difficult just to finish these race's back then!
King Petty said first time he met Earnhardt they was runnin here at Martinsville & on the first lap sumama gun dive bombed everybody ended up on that nice shiny STP hood of his like damn son ya tryin it on the first lap????
the drivers names alone sounds like an episode of green acres meets the clampets at petticoat junction.. check them incredible cars out they look bigger than1970,s station wagons,,,,,from australia
I am not a fan of tires only being changed under green. Sad they did not have any type of drying technology in 1980. Not like NASCAR or the tracks were broke.
I would say more about this video and rules but i would get into you tube trouble. I have already been warned. Even though people in the posted video can say whatever, I guess I can’t. Without penalty. Total b s. And you tube b s is bob sled

That is amazing to think about. A true show of physical prowess.
And don't forget they were still on bias-ply tires too!

Definitely a fact the announcers & reporters don’t discuss enough during broadcast
I was racing short track in the 70's..we had power steering.
Love watching these vintage races!!!!! 🏁🏁

Think he started MRN in the 1970s in NASCAR. But he was a track announcer before then I believe.
Those trailers parked in the grass is crazy to see.
I was at that race sitting under cover on front stretch loved re watching 😊😊😊😊
Look at this line up...wow. I hate to be that guy that stresses 'it ain't what it used to be" but....lol. man this is gold.

Starting greed music is called Steel Guitar Rag by Buck Owens & His Buckaroos
That tire rule was ridiculous.
interesting to see that teams had the freedom to use different makes and models of cars back then. teams weren’t tied to a specific manufacturer.

What a great race and a wonderful broadcast!
Would love to see a race with the NASCAR drivers now in these cars! That would be awesome!
They are sort of ugly and look like boats. Look like 1975 Monte Carlo’s.
Awesome driving from Darell “gee whiz” Waltrip!
Excluding Kyle Petty, not a driver under 30
Uh Terry Labonte Dale Eranhardt And Jimmy Means Were All Under 30
Everyone in the race can drink in victory lane. Unlike so many times today.
this was the race petty had words with earnhardt for that lap 1 incident
Great racing 🏁
Love how they use to dry the track lol
Jet dryer of its day. Used to drag tires at Rockingham
I miss grass at race tracks
The best of the best and ever will be

You got the Old Dominion 500 from here, later that year?
Nice to see nascar is consistent with stupid rules
I get costs were an issue with tires, but so is blowing out a tire or finishing worse because you pit under green and lose laps and get a bad break with the yellow.
I had no idea MRN did TV!
They Did Tv From 1979-1981 It Was Basically The Old Car And Track Program
Back when rubbin' was racin'!
Darrel took 4 tires on purpose.
He knew sooner or later they all will.
9:23 duct tape....lol. this is real, down home, good ol boys racing here.
Less than halfway through & only 6 cars on the lead lap. If that were the case today. Every single person who complains about how much better Nascar used to be, would throw a fit about how unfair it was.
Nope. that was some great racing. Legends battling in a survival of the fittest. Nowadays it's just boring parity and mediocrity.
I'll take this over a feild of entitled spoiled brats.

Remember, they had to finish 500 laps of racing with no power steering

Wow....Mike Joy is NASCAR'S Morgan Freeman.
Big organizations after time start with crazy rules. Racing is no different than videos.

The Dangerous Lifestyle !
Hard to have door handles when the doors do not open.
Mike Joy sounded like a pompadour back in the day.
0:17 What is this crash?
Likely Rusty Wallace from the 1980 Modified/Grand American combo race held at Daytona.
Tire rule fiasco

Woke Doesn't Have Anything to Do with Auto Racing Put The Jack Daniels Down And Do Some Research
Ok I can say this Mike joy has been in the sport too long that he almost should have been retired
No such thing as too long when ur a reporter & announcer
Some people like it some don’t. In the end freedom through out will win.
