Fixin' Time! Project TRX-6 Gear Fix & Discussion About FOC Motor/ ESC - Holmes Hobbies

  • A little while back, a custom Traxxas TRX-6 RC Rock Crawler was added to the Holmes Hobbies collection. This off-road beast was fitted with a Bruder MAN body by the previous owner. It also has some aftermarket electronics and a really weird gear grinding noise from the transmission. John took the rig out for a run anyway and the noise was a bit much. So in this video, he takes on the TRX-6 transmission to fix the gear mesh. But in doing so, he gets into a discussion about FOC speed controlers and motors. If you want to know some tech details about FOC, the random chat in this video is one to watch!

    I love this rant and how John can make most of us feel like we know what’s really going on. AC , DC , sign waves , square sign waves. round square waves, FOC. Firmware. Fuck. My brain is constantly amazed with this mans talent. HH is by far the leader in this ring.

    I purchased a Crawlmaster Sport 8t. A HW 1080 is controlling it and I'm running a 10t pinion. It is unbelievable how slow and smooth the start up is! I watch guys at comps running these hw fusion and axe systems and they start up so notchy and can't go as as slow as my set up. And it's got hilarious top end. You sir are awesome! As long as you're selling them I'll always run Holmes motors! I'm buying a puller pro very soon.

    I love it when you go off on a rant about motors and motor engineering, especially when use your box truck body as a white board.
    I recently got a used Slash with an older(?) Hobbywing SCT ESC and I had to swap wires to get the 'fast forward, slower reverse' straightened out. I really need to upgrade the firmware but it won't link to my phone.
    Thanks for the video.

    Noticed the not so quit great startup when I installed my AXE 2300, even on a 10t pinion. But was still acceptable, finally got around to switching the receiver to pair it to my DX5C, gives me better control of the diff locking but lose the cruise control function. Have to say, with a better radio it does have a smoother startup now.

  • @Carabei
    @Carabei 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For AXE 3300 is mostly used mesh which is one letter higher because of thicker shaft, so if normally D for 12 pinion for 3,17 shaft, E for this motor

    Traxxas gear mesh system is flawless, if you use a 1/8 shaft motor. When you go up to the 5mm shafts it is off.

    Have been toying the idea of picking up the Axe system... Have the Homes Crawlmaster sport with an 11T pinion on my Capra. Love the low speed and torque but a little lacking in top end, especially to clear mud out of the 1.9 BFG Crawlers. I think the constant speed would suit me well. Any other FOC options out there?

    Hey john, thanks for the short tutorial. I have a question for you. I have a SCX10/IIII builders kit. I am running a HW1080 with rc4wd 35 t. The drag break is terrible and it wants to pop over obstacles. How can I try to remedy that issue. Can I change the spur/pinion to help that?

    I have a TRX6 drivetrain in a GSpeed rig with a TGH trans. Using a mamba X and a Puller proV2 3500kv motor.
    Does that motor really turn 100,000+ rpm or is the data logging reading wrong?
    Can I use a 3500kv with 4s? The truck is a beast.

    • @KTMcaptain
      @KTMcaptain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where does the puller pro say 100k rpm? It says 50k rpm max. The puller pro r is 60k rpm max. That means your 3500 is 14.2v max or 3s. (Since 4s exceeds it). I have puller pro r 4100, v2 3500, and v1 2700. I only use 4s on the 2700kv standard. Tale the max rpm or rpm you want to achieve and divide by the KV. That will give you max unloaded rpm. Or you can divide the desired rpm by voltage you plan to use to find the kv you need.
      .
      Mamba data logging is very accurate, but you have to set it up correct. If you have it as a 2 pole motor it will read 2x the rpm of the 4 pole motor since it’s switching twice as much per rpm.

      @@darkhorsegarage9623 you need to put in the data viewing settings that it’s a 4 pole motor. Then it will give you the correct numbers, but right now you need to cut it in half.
      .
      A
      4 pole motor switches polarity twice as much per revolution than a 2 pole motor.

    I always wondered why I couldn't run 3s on the 3300r2 on 3s if I did any bashing or hard hard crawling "comp" it would crash a cell had it warrantied & same thing 3x over still have it in a rock rack ray w/12t pin & complete locked diff my exercise trail rig I love trail running with it. Anyway, I was actually thinking it had to do with staggering magnets not a complete series & there for has brake in amprig, & the wind up in acceleration, kinda rail gunish... there lower kv lack torch but are predictable smooth higher kv are okay. After having used your motors to copperhead theirs just don't do it for me. The throttle curve is important just like a 1 to 1 electric vehicles there is throttle curve not touch & go. On axe to implement low low start up & all out go just isn't there. The complete control of parameters on Holmes & Castles systems hands down are the trail, comp, scale, & mini 4x4 OH Yeah Best in class for our personal Opinion...

    I’m not gonna rip you over the hobbywing comments bc in my opinion I’d rather have 1 good Holmes system then 10 mediocre hobbywing systems. Holmes is the best on the market in my honest opinion the revolver has the smoothest startup and low speed control of all crawler motors. I’ve tried castle, hobbywing, and Holmes and from here on out all it’ll be is Holmes hobbies going in my rigs. I’m about to start a gspeed build it’ll be getting a 1800kv revolver crawlmaster mini and shv800 servo.

      I had an axe 3300 in my trx6, but had to get something else when I went to 5.2” tires. I’m going back and forth between a 1400 revolver-Mamba X and a 1950 revolver classic-Sidewinder 4 combo depending on trail/crawl conditions, and it’s so much more controllable. The shv800 is now the only servo I’ll put in a crawler, it beats out my reefs 777 hands down
