    Excellent video Ian. As a matter of interest I received my template this week from Blackriverlaser. For those in the UK the cost was $30 + $10 shipping. I had to pay £15.49 import tax and handling, making the total price about £38. In my opinion it is well worth the money because it’s well made, unique, and has already paid for itself in the first two orders. Joyce was so nice and helpful and I’ll be looking to buy again from her.

    Great video Ian. I am going to make my son a guitar strap and I found this to be full of great tips. By the way I live in Colorado , USA right now but was born in Alaska and you are right. Oak Leaves and Acorns are very popular here in the western states. They look good but I do not consider myself a cowboy. I like what you did, simple decorations but beautiful. Good work.

    Great video, the only thing I would add is that musicians can get really sweaty so some finishing to deal with that and protect the strap is something worth thinking about

    As a bass player I actually prefer the inside of my straps to be the unfinished flesh side. This makes it "grabby" so the bass stays at the angle I put it rather than sliding about on my shoulder.

    Nice work been in the leather trade 50 years making custom horse saddles and made a few guitar straps over the years as I play my self be ok if you brought black or brown butts or any other colour never leave change on the leather in other words hammer marks put a piece of leather there 👍

    Thank you for the video. I'm fixing to try this for both myself and my sister. I love how in depth you show your creating process. It's to often I see a video that I can almost follow but one or two things are glossed over and I just can't quite wrap my brain around it. I feel good about donating a little to try to help keep your TH-cam channel going:-))

    Just thought I'd mention what I do, almost for free, when I have drawn a pattern for myself. I first get it worked out on paper, then cut round the paper and draw it on a piece of flooring, vinyl flooring. Get the trace as accurate as possible, mark it as good as you can, cut it out pricicely with a knife, - and Bob's your uncle. (y)

    Hi Ian, Even after all this time, this video is still great lesson on how to make guitar straps. Could I ask why did you use the creasing tool on one piece as opposed to the dividers you used on the main piece? Also what size slot cutter do you have?

  • @robertwhitham5109
    @robertwhitham5109 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    suggestion. go down to your local home supply/ hardware/ paint store and get the small plastic, rubber, or silicon adhesive/paint spreaders. They are cheap and come with multiples in bags or by the piece. just a suggestion, seems they would work better and last longer than a piece of cardboard. cardboard costs money to. plus it will save some trees. ;) Later.

      P.S. That Western carving style is truly hideous. I'm a native Texan and I think it's the worst. I think it's mostly just for tradition and/or if you're elderly white folk.

    • @ouncy
      @ouncy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +R Janice Orlando Well, I'm not Texan, I'm only twenty-five and I think it looks beautiful. It's just a repeated pattern for texture and looks in my opinion. It's funny how where we grew up, makes us see things differently, haha.

    Great movie, watched it several times. I like your dedication on the leather and how to work it as nice as possible. Only one point of critique, I am probably probably not the only one, I somehow expected some tones at the end of the guitar to celebrate your masterpiece :-)
    Thanks Ian for making these movies.

    Ayup, Ian,
    I got a pattern from Joyce and about to make my first guitar strap for my own Gretsch 6120...just curious as to how, as mum used to say, to avoid an "Idiot's length" of thread and keep it doable by hand - how do you terminate - in a long line of saddle stitching then start again to continue the run without it showing?...could be a very useful video for us beginners pal!.... Hope your personal stuff is picking up, by the way.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Ian, I tried to figure how to send this to you in a private message, but couldn't. Regarding Barge Cement. I have worked at Tandy in California (U.S.) for quite awhile. Barge cement became "illegal" in California (unless you have a business license). So, Barge made a newer environmentally friendlier version. It is that new version that is the same as the Tanner's. The original Barge (which comes in a yellow and red can, is much stronger and lasts much longer. It is this original version that most shoe guys have always used. And,,,as I said, you can still get it, even in California, which bans everything, if you have a business license. Tandy sells it still in all stores except California. Not sure about Great Britain, but, just wanted to bring it up, as your video makes it sound as though the Tanner's is the same as Barge, But, there are two different Barge's. Thanks for all your great vids, very cool of you to help out beginners, I refer your vids all the time.

    • @Leodis.Leather
      @Leodis.Leather  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, not as straightforward as I thought! In the UK we just have the Tanner's Bond which seems to work fine, I haven't ever used the full strength Barge in that case.

      possibly not or you possibly need to adjust your angle, you can also try dampening the edge before bevelling

    Hey there, how does the smaller strap on the bottom of the sound box, attach to the main body of the strap?
    Maybe I missed it.

    • @jamesthe-doctor8981
      @jamesthe-doctor8981 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off, it needs two of the slots on the main part of the strap. Put the narrower tongue end of the narrow strap through any slot on the main strap except the last one. Then feed it back through the next lower slot. Finally, thread it back through its own slot at the wider "T" end of itself, and pull tight. If you need it longer or shorter, just move it up or down however many slots it takes to get it to the correct overall length.

    Hello Ian,
    question here: I have these pricking diamond prongs or whatever they would officially be called (for punching stitching holes) but I'm constantly running into the issue that the leather jams itself in between the prongs which makes it a bitch to get loose which leaves marks because I have to use so much force to pull it out again. Is there anything I could do to stop having that issue because at the moment I've withdrawn from using that method at all because of this (I now punch the holes one by one which makes it a lot harder to get a perfectly straight line).
    Greetings
