    First thanks for sharing your experience,
    And you guys did a great job 👍🏼
    Well done all.
    As an ex-mariner of VLCC’s and been in typhoons, I would say that your precaution measures were of a high standard taking into account the tonnage of your vessel and the preparations you took, and the monitoring of the anchor drag status, and dealing with the snapped snubber in a prompt professional manner.
    May you all have pleasant and safe future passages.
    Keep the good work
    God Bless

    To prevent chafing, we got an old fire hose and cut sections to thread the lines through.
    Works GREAT, and cheap too.
    We threw a BBQ for the local fire department to thank them for the old hoses which they gave to us for free.
    We shared them with other boats.

    Just came across this video. I am so impressed that you know so much to do for a massive storm. Very high tech equipment.

  • @ChristianFauchald
    @ChristianFauchald 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Might consider old/spent firehose for chafe protection, captain. heavy rubber inside; bonded to woven cotton duck outside. Wears like a goat's gullet. It's also strong enough that you can pierce it and add a leash to the inboard end to keep it from walking down the line. You can get 50' for $20 on eBay, or just stop by the firehouse and inquire. That's likely enough to last a lifetime.

    Super good video, one of the best I watched. When you were not outside doing maintenance I can imagine it must of been cozy while the wind blew and the rain poured down. Beautiful Yacht. Thanks for braving the weather to post this video and may i say, good choice to be in the anchorage.

    • @nordhavn72
      @nordhavn72  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly it was a lot of time spent waiting! The actual storm was interesting, but very manageable. The scary part is just the not knowing what will happen.

    • @SteelyPaw
      @SteelyPaw 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I can understand how scary it is waiting to see how big the storm will be. The weather is still not as accurate as we would like in situations such as that. I was glad to see that you did not suffer any damage. Your good decision paid off for sure. I think your boat could have withstood double that intensity and still been safe where you anchored. Thank you for your reply.

    Thanks for sharing. You may want to rethink how you attach your shubber lines to the cleats. The way you have it, not wrapped around the cleat horns is putting massive strain on the knot. I'm glads it all work out for you.

    You did it the right way. Boats get damaged at docks during storms. One person should always be on watch while the other sleeps. Good call on keeping the engines warm in case you need to maneuver suddenly.

    Great video i was actually on the payroll at the time and worked on a number of those boat. The water was in the mechanic and fabrication shops. We had almost everyone stop working to start hauling and blocking up boats. In all we hauled around 130-140 boats in 5 days.

    Hey, Kathy, this was the perfect time for your other half to push you over the side and sequester the proceeds of the both for himself. Like they do in the movies.
    But good seamanship is good commonsense. Good decision to head out into more roomy waters and anchor. Being at the dock was never a good idea.

    I still remember Sandy. For the longest time I never even gave it a second thought of a hurricane being big enough to reach Chicago but Sandy did. Boy it was freaky seeing how Sandy affected Lake Michigan and seeing the idiots being outside right next to the lakefront and the waves. I'm weather savvy so even I know that it's dangerous to be near the lake during a storm like that.

  • @smacksman1
    @smacksman1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent video and Oh the luxury of your beautiful yacht! I'm green with envy ;-)
    My old Bristol 30 sailboat and I were in Utches Marina, Cape May at the same time. They had no keel boat cradles so we stayed in the marina. The predicted storm surge of 9 to 10 ft. was correct and we had over a foot left to the top of the piles so the marina stayed in place. I stop the anti-chafe plasic tube from riding up/down as the boat bounces about, by drilling a little hole each end of the tube and attaching a light line which is rolling hitched to the warp.
    To those who said 'why not get out of the way when you know Sandy is coming' - it was a huge hurricane; over a thousand miles across as a tropical storm with winds up to a steady 60kn. gusting more. Sandy moved at 28mph - I move at 6mph - QED

    Our 47' meridian was at a marina in Brick New Jersey and the marina could not get out boat hauled out because they didn't have any space to put it . We kept the boat tied up at the marina as out only choice. We expected out boat not to survive because it wasn't hauled out. While we were pulling into the lot to access our slip, after the hurricane, we noticed all of the boats that were hauled out of the water were all on their sides blown off of their chalks. We went looking at the marina for our boat and for our surprise, out boat was one of 3 boats that survived the hurricane. Over 70 other boats at that marina got completely destroyed.

    Given the projected path of the storm we didn't think there was significant danger to us or to the boat. We were in a very protected bay with plenty of options - two good anchors, engines, bow/stern thrusters, etc. A lot of it was just waiting...........checking for leaks, checking anchor, etc. Not something we'd like to do again, but would if we had to.

    57.3 knot gust is 66 mph for those who don't know how to convert. Pretty good breeze! You have a great video and it was even educational to see your snubber set up. It is always a good choice to anchor off beach and away from a marina. It keeps flying debris to a minimum and less chance for your boat to be damaged from someone's boat that didn't bother to take the precautions that you did. I would sail,cruise with you folks anytime, but you are on the wrong coast. Try Alaska's inside Passage sometime.

    • @nordhavn72

    Thanks so much for sharing. My wife and I are Florida residents and down here we are under the gun fairly regularly. I know down here the largest commercial boats would anchor in the canal between the Indian and Banana rivers where they were mostly protected from wind. Without sounding obnoxious, were you concerned about the need to set out multiple anchors? I don't remember what the path prediction was for Sandy anymore. I think that Chapmans recommends several in a star shape under these circumstances. Thanks again for sharing your adventure and glad that things came out ok....!

    She was a sailboat but also had engines. The point is not to put yourself or your boat in harm's way if it can be avoided. Being out there with an impending hurricane is more dangerous that being in a safe anchorage. We did not use flopper stoppers at anchor - we wanted to be able to pick up and leave quickly if we had to. It was not at all unfomfortable.

  • @nordhavn72

    Like the HMS Bounty tried to do? No way were we going out to sea with a hurricane on the horizon. We really can;t go down the ICW because of our draft and we never considered going outside to go south.Hurricane tracks are not completely predictable, so even though you have some notice they are coming, you want to be sure not to make your situaion worse. We felt pretty safe with our strategy.

    Great video, Kathy! I have a question for you. On your instrumentation panel there is a display that looks like AWA. During the video it was either P or S with a number after along with a degree symbol in parenthesis. Can you explain what that setting is.
    Thanks again for sharing with those like me who are boating dreamers.

    • @nordhavn72
      @nordhavn72  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Larry. That is the Apparent Wind Angle relative to the bow. P means the wind is on the port side and S is starboard. It is more meaningful (accurate) when the boat is moving as otherwise its hard for the algorithm to determine where the bow is. But lets say the boat is traveling due north and the wind is coming from due west. The AWA would be P90, that is 90 degrees to the port side of the boat. A much more important piece of info for sailors than for motor yachties!

      @nordhavn72  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daren Brayson Yes, we are retired and live aboard. We were lucky that we were not directly in the path of Sandy. Actually, the waiting is a bit boring - you know it's coming, but all you can do is sit and wait. So filming was a good way to pass the time!

    • @nordhavn72
      @nordhavn72  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +KMT15 Just curious where you would have gone? Paths are just models - we weren't going to head south into the storm, like the Bounty. North wasn't a good option either as the brunt of the storm hit up there. There was nowhere locally that could haul our boat. Really, we spent a LOT of time Looking at options and determined that where we were was about the best option. Turned out to be a pretty good choice.

    Luckily, we sold our boat about a month before Sandy hit. We were docked in Highlands NJ which is a small fishing town on the Raritan by Sandy Hook. The whole town was under 10 feet of water and was lucky that most of the swells were broken up by the Sandy Hook peninsula. Unfortunately, most boats we're destroyed and nearly every building in town had to be completely gutted or torn down

    Snubber line tip.! Make your self a good snubber bridle. Use fray protection al the time .. the rope must non move true the tube .
    So lock those to the rope, maybe a knot will do that trick. The tube must move not the rope. Also use long snubber lines .. this was to short for the big ship you have. And with Gail force wind accept that the chain does some pulling too..

      @@peterc504 the sensor was Airmar - the data displayed on various instruments, including Furuno. I don't know how to compare it - it seemed to do the job and was accurate based on the few times we compared it to readings on friends boats.

    with windlass gear such as that (and chain locks), snubbers are so pointless. Those cleats are not fastened as well to the deck as the windlass.. and when you need to get out in a hurry, the snubbers just cause problems and delays, or they snap.

    • @nordhavn72
      @nordhavn72  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most Nordhavns use snubbers. Ours is threaded through an eye near the waterline, so it changes the point of pressure as our bow is so high up from the water. It also makes for a much quieter night. We now have a "regular" snubber and a "heavy weather" one designed for those situations.

  • @pigskin1000

    your Nordhavn could have been out to sea and held her own as well. I would have made the same decision. When on a dock you are helpless when things go bad. At anchor you have way more options if you need to make decisions about your situation.

      Nice. I saw you there and took photos of your boat. My recently deceased father absolutely loved those boats. Have been going to Abacos for last 20+ years. Parents used to have a 50' sailboat we would sail over and hit many of the islands down the chain. Marina at Man-O-War Cay sunk it when we were in Brazil on vaca, after having it hauled for bottom paint. They forgot to put plug in it before floating it. They denied everything of course. Can't wait to get back down there for a visit. tx and enjoy.

    Question: would it have been better to sail south a bit to move away from where the hurricane was going to hit? It looked like from the map you showed that it was further offshore to the south.

    • @nordhavn72
      @nordhavn72  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No way would we sail south towards the storm. That's what the Bounty did! Remember, the models are just predictions and hurricanes don't always follow the projected tracks!
