I thought the SR40 had better highs, while the SR25 had more lows. To confirm, I looked at the frequency response graphs. Sure enough, the SR40 is flat past 20kHz but has LF roll-off below 100Hz, while the SR25 has HF roll-off at 15kHz but is flatter in the LF range. It's kind of a toss-up depending on the music, but I do prefer the SR25's tom sounds. Plus the SR25 is significantly less expensive (but still expensive). Makes the DK3 look like a great way to go, if you're okay with not mic'ing every drum individually.
Of course, it helps that you're running the mics into the 1024. I wonder how they'd sound going into a Focusrite Scarlett, heh.

It's crazy because at a point it's not even "can you play it?" it's "can you think of it?"
Like, I can play everything in this video if i memorized what he played, but I'd never be able to come up with it myself.

No no, you’re definitely not self taught. The rudiments used, mechanical efficiency in your technique, french grip, transition from buzz to double stroke roll. 5 and 7 stroke rolls ending on the kick. Tip of the hat to ya, kid. Keep groovin’ you Lil’ Max Roach.

Beautiful mics!.....I've always been into colored sound thing, mics, pres, comps. But when you hear an extremely high quality transparent uncolored mic, you get why they're so desirable!.
With the SR40s I could hear that subtle top end extension with individual hits. You sense more of that impact of the tip of the stick For some reason I couldn't really hear the difference with the full kit playing?. Wonder if it's because of the way the brain processes a single sound source as opposed to many at once??.
LOVE the those bone dry Istanbuls!! .....like 90% cacao chocolate ;:-)
Did you eventually change out the original batter head on the 28 Ludwig??

To my ears, and with these headphones, that SR40 is tighter and flatter. The SR25 has a bit of room /ambiance in it. Both are killer.
The winner, of course, is that bass drum tuning :()

Both sound great and disappear. Fun to compare--and fun to listen to some sweet sweet druumsmusic. the SR40 seems to have a little less upper mid presence but more top extension and a more natural sound. 2 cents at best.

I know what you mean. If those are the Vic Firth surdo mallets, then no. There are not any beads in them. I believe it was a slight attack from the heads. The core of the mallets can produce a slightly articulated sound.

Wow, very subtle difference between the two mics (I’m sure even more so because we’re listening to the audio through TH-cam). I just bought the Earthworks DK3 kit (with the SR25 mics) a few weeks ago. Although they’re not really working for me in a 3-mic configuration as I had hoped, I’m much happier with them when I’m mic’ing all the drums individually and using the SR25s as overheads. And I bet I’d like the SR40s even more, except, you know, too late for me. Thanks for the demo, though.

I like what I'm hearing but I need to use my UE over-ear Headphones before I make this switch. I'm not feeling my Shure mics and definitely need to upgrade. I see Sweetwater has some decent prices. Now that mic Earthworks mic preamp is pretty pricey. I'm gonna go with my UAD Apollo stuff- X4, ETC.)

SR25 is a smidge chunkier and more direct sounding in my opinion. Not particularly surprising, cardioid vs hypercardioid.
I have always used the omnis by preference, particularly with any sort of flat frequency measurement / transparent sort of application.

Any chance of demonstrating a Bronze snare.
    I’m thinking of getting one.
The various demonstrations of bronze on TH-cam, all sound different.
Ludwig , Gretsch and Tama, seem to sound the best, but you don’t know what processing has been done, for a true sound...
    Thanks.. 👍🏿

    • @pfunnk14
      @pfunnk14 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends on what style of music you're playing. I think the gretch bell brass is so freaking good for rock or heavier music. Tama star reserve brass is great all around... super versatile. Ludwig chrome over brass is good for jazz or classic rock. But honestly any of them are going to be great. Brass snares are great. I love em. Ludwig definitely is the cheapest if that matters.

Carter McLean thanks for releasing this! I was just reading up on your mic setup earlier today. So is the last minute or so of the vid, where you add the caption of which mic is being heard, are both mics being captured in the same position (the 40 and 25 are both being recorded from the overhead of the Glyn Johns) or more so the 25 is the overhead and the 40 is capturing the sound out front of the kick? Thanks!!
