    With this "social distancing" going on, its a perfect time for exploring! I'm going out today to do a little geological trip to a local cave. I have not done ant serious collecting in over 10 years and since I have the week off of work, time to enjoy some 'me' time. I love your videos and collection! Stay safe as well! Best Wishes Emma! 😊

    Greetings! I was lucky to find your videos tonight as a fellow avid collector of rocks, minerals, fossils, and seashells. I converted a bedroom into what I call my personal Natural History Museum back in 2011, and it doubles as a plant conservatory with lots of supplemental lighting. This room has shelves and tables with hundreds of rocks, minerals and fossils - all labeled individually. But I added a theme to the display (Enchanted Forest) and weaved in drift wood, faeries, sheet moss, sculpted wooden mushrooms from Bali, etc. into the display. All of my minerals and rocks have small labels in front of them giving their name and place of origin if known. The living room has a seashore theme with several hundred mollusk shells and coral. I also have seascape paintings on the wall and carvings of shore birds on the coffee table and floor. But the shells have a hidden number label attached to them, and I created a separate Word document that lists that number's scientific name, the geographical range of the species, and other info. I have too many shells to create labels in front of them so I can save space. Off topic, chalcedony is pronounced kal-sed-oh-nee - at least here in the U.S. Thanks heaps for your videos, luv.

    Nice little collection you've got there, Emma! Your enthusiasm about fossils and geology is infectious; something that is not often seen in someone your age. You said you collect most of what you have. Have you ever had to opportunity to collect in Scotland? Great minerals/fossils up there if you know where to look. Also, since you enjoy fossils, check out the Michigan Rocks channel for fossils and other neat rocks from the upper Great Lakes region of North America. Stay safe young lady and Happy Holidays! ;-)

    Lovely collection
    P.S. it should be noted that sand tiger shark teeth, and, anterior teeth from goblin sharks are very similar in appearance.
    There are slight differences that can be observed to distinguish the two, there are numerous articles available online that detail the differences if you feel the need for certainty in this respect.

    Emma: I would organize your collection in the following way: (1) rocks and minerals by type: sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic. (2) shells: gastropods, pelecypods, echinoderms, etc. (3) fossils: vertebrate, invertebrate (subcategories cephalopods, pelecypods, gastropods, echinoderms, etc.), plant, and other. Organized in this way it would be much easier to locate specimens. Also, I like your idea of thinning out the collection. You really do have a lovely collection of specimens!! I envy your cabinets!!!!!

    Why don't you build a shadow box to house the small little shells and fossils you have?

  • @bobthebrickbuilder1876
    @bobthebrickbuilder1876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know a whole lot about rocks/fossils and minerals but I think they're really cool. I've got a tupperware container full of shark teeth and small rocks, shells and fossils, that I found at a thrift store. Some nice stuff.
    I've gotten more interested in rocks, as a buddy of mine and I, are looking into making guitar picks out of stones and copper (not combined, on their own). I have a beautiful piece of ocean jasper that was made into a guitar pick by stoneworks guitar picks. Let's just say I've "misplaced" it lol. Lastly, a shark tooth makes for a decent guitar pick, as well. Great sound.
    You have an amazing collection, Em! Thanks for sharing your shelves and your passion for rocks etc.

      @@owenwootton5541 They usually have colors that are extremely saturated or cover the crystal and the matrix (host rock). Sometimes you can see the dye in cracks etc. Also, using Mindat (a website on minerals) you can look up pictures of the mineral you want and compare it with the ones being sold. Rocks and Crystals that have an 'aura' are crystals coated with a metal vapour. I personally don't buy them but some people love them, so it's all up to you! If you don't care that it's fake or lab created/ altered then it's fine! :)

      @@owenwootton5541 That's all good! I hope you find what you like! Some good minerals to start out with that still look cool are things like calcite (spiky), Aragonite (look like little brown/gray disco balls), Pyrite and Fluorite (cubes or octahedrons) and of course Quartz! Just typing 'calcite specimen' for example is a good way to find what you need. If you're starting out, I'd aim for the 0-15$ range, that way you don't overspend on something you find out to be fake or altered later. (That happened to me, I bought a baked amethyst that was listed as citrine haha..) Stay safe and have a great day :)
