Great video. I just bought my GM 40 and would love to see an in depth video for recording songs. I have never recorded music and have no idea what all is involved. However, that is one of the reasons I bought this amp. Hope you decide to make one. Maybe one for absolute beginners that do not even know what an IR is. 👍😉
On this last Father's Day I got a really great deal on a Tube Meister Deluxe 20 at Long and McQuade. It sounds great! I've got amazing results tracking with Cabinet emulation on and off (plus IR). This is my very first tube amp and I'm wondering.... Is it possible to run plugins (for instance, Amplitube modulation pedals) into the FX loop? Do you have experience with it? Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and thoughts.
My pleasure! Enjoy it! In hindsight, I think I'd prefer the Tubemeister. I never use the built in effects on the GMD40. As for FX into the amp, I guess if you have the outboard gear to route the signal out of your computer and through the amp you could do it but that would be hard to explain in the comments. Plus I've never tested that. You'd need to take a DI out of the interface, run it through the amp and then back into the interface and set the correct outputs in the software. But watch those levels! Would be a fun test hough...good lick and enjoy the amp!
Thank you for your in-depth video. ? : the GM40 delivers quite agressive tones, how do I get more vintage-Marshall-type sounds, a bit softer, but still with lots of gain ? Bit like the JVM OD1-type ? Thank you so much
My pleasure! Try the crunch channel. It has quite a bit of gain itself. You can even try the clean channel boosted. Push the mids a bit in both cases and see where that gets you. Good luck!
For your main riff, it's in stereo. You stated you used different pickups and different IRs. Did you actually play that riff twice? If not, can you explain how you did it? My challenge with the H&K GM40 is how to record in stereo. I like almost all guitars in stereo and I'm coming from using a stereo guitar amp to the GM40 which is mono. Thank you for your help! Thank you! I own both of those amps. They are both great and very different. The Grandmeister has more in it. That doesn't mean better. But if you can only have one, this will give you so much in one amp. 4 Channels plus Boost and Effects. The REVV G20 is a little monster and has a brilliant clean channel. The DI is better in the REVV. It's a Two Channel amp but the wide switch and aggression modes gives you more options on top. So really it comes down to what you need. It's worth noting the GMD40 is 40 Watts and the G20 is 20 Watts....for what it's worth ;)
Good review. One thing I don’t think you mentioned, unless I missed it, is the Power Soak. modes 0W, 1W, 5W, 20W and then the full 40Watts. 0W is great for apartment living late at night direct into your interface into your DAW. I typically use 1W after midnight and 5W during the day but hey 5W on the Ultra channel with settings cranked will get you evicted from any apartment in the world 😎 Good tip about switching off the cab emulation and using IRs. I bought the CC212 6months before I got the GMD40 and was using it with my Bugera Infinity T50, a much maligned but great amp. I switch between the two but late at night it’s the GMD40. XLR out into my mixer is good too so you can hear it through studio monitors vs the cab. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

What you said in the video about volume and being driven to modelers was exactly the route I took and why I got a Fractal FM9. Now I don't need it, and the GM40 feels way more realistic to play through headphones through my audio interface, record, and tweak real time with its real knobs.

That’s great, thanks man. Just a silly question, how can I connect between the amp and foot switch, cause I only have 7pin cable comes With the amp, but doesn’t work, do I still need another 5pins? Thanks for that

Absolutely! No other gear is required. And it’s smart. If no speaker is plugged into the speaker out it automatically activates the internal load so you won’t damage the amp.
If you want to use it with your tablet you need some way to connect to it. So you need an adapter to connect the midi to your device or use the desktop method I presented in the video. But that requires an audio interface and midi cables.

Thank you. I guess you didn't watch the whole video because I discussed exactly that. You absolutely can turn off the cab sim and use an external device or software IR...check the video for that.
@@LonelyRocker I did watch the video. Must’ve missed that bit. 4 kids running around here all day, you miss some stuff 😂 thank you for the vid and so far you’re the only person who has responded. I really appreciate that.
I totally understand kid distractions. And happy to be here for you. Cheers!
This is my dream amp!
It is a true workhorse. Gets the job done in a lot of scenarios….
Wanna say a big thank you to suggestion audio assault IRs I mean the red box IRs are good but sometimes it just doesn’t cut it for me, I think you can get away with it live but when recording, an IR is a must have, currently there’s a big discount so it goes for 7 bucks, that’s a steal IMO! And they sound amazing ngl!!!
My pleasure. Really cool company. The red Box built in option is very handy and convenient. But certainly having a range of cabs available for your mix is great. The Grandmeister is a very versatile recording amp.
@@LonelyRocker I can’t agree more, I don’t like plugins tbh I love to be playing with a real amp, this has nothing to do with tone but just personal feel and taste, I love to dial in my own tones so presets don’t always cut it for me especially since I play random modern styles, so I’m not trying to sound like slash or EVH.
@@khay2210 You're speaking my language!! I only moved to DI tube amp recording because of limitations recording at home. But so many great Cab options. It really is a great hybrid method...
I have this amp and I don’t know how to do that any of it 🙌, I am old school player 😢 and it’s too much to understand and learn for myself that I wanna give it up👐
Don't give up!! You can also just take the speaker out and use it just like an old amp! You can ignore all of that tech and just enjoy a great sounding amp!!
Great video Dan! Keep it up! :)
Thank you 🥰
So I can just connect the redbox to the audio interface and I'm good to go?
Absolutely! No other gear is required. And it’s smart. If no speaker is plugged into the speaker out it automatically activates the internal load so you won’t damage the amp.
Can i use the app with my h&k40 without buying the wifi adaptor?
If you want to use it with your tablet you need some way to connect to it. So you need an adapter to connect the midi to your device or use the desktop method I presented in the video. But that requires an audio interface and midi cables.
Fantastic video, found this in a H&K forum posted by their engineer :). I have the GM36, would like to upgrade to the GM40. Will all of my midi presets transfer over from my footswitch?
Thank you!! That's a very good question! You may want to throw that to HK. I'm in touch with the one who shared that video. I'll put this on my list of questions for when I speak with him again. Maybe shoot him a note in the FB group. Maybe he will respond.
Um, look, O.K., you are taking me right off the ground.
I am a straight-up analog guy.
And I purchased the GM-40... it is wonderful as-is.
So, I am ready to make the transition now to Computer assisted tone.
But, what the the hell is M.I.D.I. ???
I wouldn't know an I.R. if it bit me in the ass.
I realize I am migrating to Computer and Rack gear...
Can you please back up the truck for idiots like me?
Loved the video, too dumb to understand it.
My many thanks!!!
Mark
Thank you! Watch the videos on my channel I cover a ton of real amp to computer tone shaping. Feel free to ask specific questions on the videos. I’m here to help!
What is M.I.D.I., and I.R.?
I just bought the fancy foot switch, and i will have to buy a dedicated p.c. for my music stuff...
can you help me stay straight?
thanks!!!
Mark
