I have seen Ren perform live many times and I was there that day. The crowd always really appreciates him, whoever he is performing with - it is almost impossible for people to walk past. They just have to stop and watch. It’s magical.

Ren can do anything. His talent is endless. I think the only thing I haven't seen him do is play the drums. He's amazing. Sam is incredible too.

“He hears music differently.” I think that’s it, it explains how novel and creative his musical compositions are. They don’t follow “regular” patterns that we’re used to. He’s playing with playing! Almost a little mad scientist’s gleam.

As an artist, I think it’s beautiful that he is so comfortable using all of the tools at his disposal. I’m a visual artist, and in my terms it’s like he’s making mixed media songs. Plus, how much does it rock that, not only does he surround himself with talented people, but he has no ego with taking a backseat to showcase their skill? He’s so comfortable with himself that he really lets his partners shine.

I have to agree with you on Ren hearing things different I noticed that when I first heard him in Hi Ren that very first guitar solo that he does you can hear the twist The angst the emotional response in the guitar like it's speaking I remember thinking it have this certain chaotic twang.
Folks may find this a strange comparison, but Ren's different ear reminds me of Beethoven. He had mental health problems as well, severe depression and then his increasing deafness and the fact he was a peasant with the mind of a genius in a class dominated society. Beethoven introduces new sounds into music and all of a sudden gets more and more radical from the age of 32/33, the same age as Ren now. Also Beethoven famously said you need to know the rules to break them, they also share the thing that music should come from the heart however intellectual it is...

Ren and Sam have another performance similar to this one and just as amazing called Walking On the Moon/No Diggity. To see their talent at it's rawest and being forced to improvise and rocking it, look at their Blind Eyed performance featuring Angry Car Park Attendant. It's equal parts hilarious and impressive.
