This song is a masterpiece. One of the best songs ever, I love the story and the pictures you are painting. I love the use of words, the similarities and the differences. I am sure to hear this song the rest of my life.

This song brought me to tears when I first heard it-streaming tears. Gretchen and her husband performed it opening for John Prine at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson, Miss. in October 2012. The images and and perspective are incredible. No matter what she does from here on out, this will be her opus. What a quality creation!

I had never heard this song until I heard Scottish singer Kirsten Adamson sing it. Both haunting and beautiful at once. But then, what else can be expected from such a great songwriter.

Beautiful composition, depicting the joys, hopes, fears, and horrors of The Boomer generation. To condense such raw emotion and the zeitgeist of the times into a few short minutes of notes, chords, and images is an exquisite work of art.

      Beautiful expressed. Profoundly pointed.
Utterly correct in its conclusion. We used to say talent repeats, genius creates. A genius use of incredibly simple music and words to create some would say a modern masterpiece in song writing skill and art.

Every time I hear it, this song transports me to that time...the end of peace. The video captures the sense of the song on every level. Thank you, Gretchen.

Songs come and songs go and then there are the others. Sometimes when you absorb the melody, for an initial point of recognition, the lyric has to be left as a point of reference. Then one day it is all together, encapsulated in the some centralized zone that you are free to experience within the self same body of work.
Gretchen Peters is one of those artists who has a complexity to deceive once you accept the melody. Dig deeper and you find her lyrics have the ability to go beyond the "Moon in June" found elsewhere.
She is a true troubadour of the Singer/Songwriter genre, long may she reign.

The human heart works well once it has been broken and Gretchen Peters' heart is working well.

Had the immense pleasure of hearing Gretchen Peters sing this a few days ago at Cambridge Folk festival. There were tears. Mine and many others, Notice she cried too,

I really super-LUV this song ... but the video itself (a flashback to the turbulent 60's) is ever so much more powerful, especially in the dark & troubled times of 2020. Amen, Gretchen.

WOW! This is so beautiful I can't breathe.
My only knowledge of Idlewild airport was from Goodfellas movie. I know they renamed it to Kennedy.
The lyrics, the arrangement, the video. I am keen to know Gretchen's meaning behind this song.

Saw Gretchen and met her during the meet'n'greet at intermission when Three Women came to the 'Burgh. Started to occasionally drift into her material from time to time since and somehow landed here today... Jan 6, 2022. Been listening to all of the talking heads recall and repulse and revise and reject all morning. Then watched this piece right after Lucinda's Good Souls and Better Angels and was taken back to May 4, 1970 when I was just 15 and staying for a few days without my parents at my Grandma and Grandpa's home near Akron. I also recall the fear of JFK's and the others' passings and riots of my childhood and my young anger and belief from that May day that *this* time was going to be *the* time that brought it all to some kind of conclusion... Now I'm thinking about last Jan 6 and how I thought it would all change by today... .. .
TBH... I just don't know *what* to think anymore. I think that many people are just wired to be the way some are... hateful, hurtful and unchangeable... like I thought I had become 40 years ago when my life was about to go off the rails, until He/She/It put some wonderful people in my life who helped me by teaching me that I could keep that help by giving it away. Maybe when Fred told us to look for the helpers, I should spend more time rejoicing in the kind of helpers that Lucinda and Gretchen and Mary and Cockburn and Gorka and Prine and all have been for me for so long.
This is day 14,527 by Grace and Mercy for me... I guess it's time to shut the screens off and get washed up and get out there and try to pass that on, eh? Like Bruce says... Life Short, Call Now... .. .

I came across this song on the radio and I had to check it on TH-cam to be sure I heard right. So no one is going to mention that she said the N-word at 3:43? The fact that so many people are praising the song in the comments shows the mindset of most country music fans.

    • @awnateixeira8919
      @awnateixeira8919 ปีที่แล้ว

You are not the only one who noticed. But yes the only one to comment here until now. She’s been confronted on this by many people and she unapologetically defends her use of the word. It’s gross. I confronted her in 2019 privately. Have sent her videos and articles on why it is not ok for white ppl to use the N word. And she has never responded. In fact there is a Q&A on her website that defends her use of the word. She continues to perform it and is the word without any acknowledgment or change. It’s disgusting behaviour.

Glad you like this! And yes, she wrote this one. Gretchen Peters occasionally covers others songs', but the vast majority of those on her albums and at her concerts are her own. And as a sign of how respected she is among her peers, in 2014 she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The last verse "tells it like it is" regarding gun violence in the U.S.A. Guns rights activists can argue until they're blue in the face, but the fact of the matter is that Americans have always "shot people just because they don't like them". Drones used by the military are the newest chapter in our love of guns.

I would like to let you know I ascribe the video artistry in this to the inspiration behind the 40 plates of a picture book containing brainy quotes that I authored.
