As an autistic person and parent of an autistic son, this is very accurate. Sure, the mother made mistakes but that’s the challenge framed by the double empathy problem - as a parent you walk around on eggshells trying to pre-empt and anticipate your next move, and you get it wrong - a lot - even if you’re autistic. And while it might look as if Tom is annoyed by his neurotypical mother, he actually probably cares about her very deeply and is continually frustrated in himself for not being easier to get along with. And I didn’t see Sarah’s love as a limitation, she’s learning and it takes a lifetime to adapt and figure out how much to support and how far to step back - and I say this as someone who’s lived with autism for nearly 60 years. There’s no easy answer. I’m a pain to live with (I’ve been married over 30 years) because the way people need to interact with me is dictated by my sensory environment. I suspect a lot of people will watch this film and be unaware how much care and thought went in to the script. Well done 👍
My son has Asperger's, I've often wondered, does he love me? Of course he tells me. And he's almost 18. I get that teenagers pull away from their parents. But I don't want to ever do anything wrong to destroy his feelings about me. I love him so much.
I have asbergers and have had this issue especially during my time in primary school. I was always treated differently by teachers, principals and students this is a really good quality film and very well done. It isn't easy living with asbergers syndrome but it doesn't mean we aren't like everyone else. Everything about this film made me smile especially the attention to detail and the love and care that went into the script.
This happens to me almost everyday, I’m at college rn and it could be better, a friend of mine talks to me like I’m different, I know he means well and doesn’t intend on it but it can be annoying, it also doesn’t help by telling people I have autism. I’d rather just not have people know at this point, it’s terrible being treated like the runt of the litter everyday when I know I’m capabale of a lot more.
4:51 it’s not that I dont know how to act…I’m too scared of doing or saying something wrong, I’m not afraid around people I get to know better And I like hugs…I love my grandpa…I just dont want to hug someone who has hurt me before…
I saw it that she is enabling his behaviour and walking on egg shells to please him but he is too old to be treated like that even if he is autistic. Like it's just going to make him feel worse surely
I don’t fully understand what he says to the friend - the final line - and why, what it means, what he is referring. Does he say he wants his mother to start seeing him like everybody else? Why?
Very good, but I would suggest not using functional labels in the description. It just describes how well someone can hide their autism and is often described as abilist (discriminating against neurodiverse people) which I know you don't want to seem. Which is why I thought I would inform you about it.
Other countries still use the Aspergers diagnosis. It’s only in America that it’s considered offensive, and this was fine in Great Britain. Likely a lot of the comments are from Brits too.
I wasn't saying not to use the term Asperger's. I was saying, explaining it as a high functioning autism might be offensive to some autistic people because they consider it as abilist language (as it just explains how well someone can hide their autism). I too have used this but found it out from multiple autistic youtubers reacting to things and pointed out that they are controversial terms. I believed that the people behind this movie wouldn't want anything that could possibly offend their target audience so wanted to explain that. Although I'm sometimes not good at explaining myself and think I had just watched a youtuber rant about this, so that might have shown up in my comment. I didn't know that. When I got diagnosed maybe 3 years ago I was just told I was on the spectrum and they had combined them. I live in the UK.
Right. Here in America there are a lot of autsies who equate the HFA label with Aspergers and are offended by either one. I understand their rationale but I also get that there are other ways to see it so it doesn’t offend me. I think there are people on the spectrum who need a great deal more support than some others and it doesn’t serve their needs to lump everyone together. Pretending all autsies are indistinguishable also sets people up for self comparisons that can be quite tormenting. So I think we should, as a society, simply stop stigmatizing disability and the need for support. How well we function is a real issue, stigmatizing us too. Erasing differences doesn’t really end stigma IMO. I don’t think there’s an easy answer but failing to acknowledge the greater level of struggle for some autistic folks doesn’t really help them. I think it’s It’s sort of a strange debate.
I want to share with you the truth and life. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). God is holy and the punishment for sin is Hell. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He died on the cross and rose again on the third day for us all. Repent of your sins, believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him into your heart and follow Him.

This is a really well-produced film; we get to see both sides of each situation and the tug of emotions is very empathetic.
