I have watched this video about ten times tonight. Every word this woman produces is witty, I am overwhelmed by the beauty of her mind and how we are privileged to have her around this era. Helene's charm and beauty is an ongoing event, she is happening now and that is amazing. I can't dream of anything greatest than you, dear Helene.
When Héleène Grimaud speaks, one is completely drawn into what she says, how she says it and her precise and highly intelligent way of expressing her thoughts and feelings. When she plays music, one cannot think of anything else other than the music and the wondrous performer;. She is (has) a rare and irresistible combination of intellect, talent, personality, and beauty. It's a true & great privilege to breathe the same air she breathes. Thanks for uploading the interview, and thanks to Marek Eben who brought out the very best of Ms. Grimaud.
@@guillaumefloatin91 it's called hypocritical body moves and nonsensical face grimaces to scream and shout for attention. My guess she never got any attention from her parents and suffered from the nervous chicken syndrome ( terrified of everything). I can certainly say the same applies to your sorry arse.
The sun grows dark in my eyes......after seeing Hélène Grimaud, and hearing her speak with such intelligence, wit and humility. A real beauty in every way.
Have no adequate words; the interviewer often seems overwhelmed. Pure, unselfconscious/modest/unpretentious beauty, musical sensibility and intelligence.
As I listen to her play I can start to hear her breathing. The room disappears; everything but her & the piano...then I become the piano. She becomes pure emotion when she plays, a beautiful spirit playing a beautiful composition & turning it into something extremely personal.
I think I ve just seen the most beautiful woman on the planet! Beauty onlysurpassed by her mind and talent. Could nt agree more about Bach being the top of all geniuses and loved the Ravel piano. What a great upload.. thanks to whoever did this
Let's review: A great artist and performer, beautiful, with a killer smile, intelligent, articulate, insightful, gentle, wildlife advocate, well -mannered and polite. Possibly an angel?
A brilliant and beautiful soul. Fascinating, articulate interview, too, especially about 20 min in, from there, when she starts talking about musical architecture.
I'm not hugely impressed by the interviewer's questions, but the responses are more than generous ... the interview succeeds on that basis in my view. It's remarkable that this interview is as recent as 2016, Ms Grimaud went through a period of very serious illness prior to that, thank God she has recovered so evidently. Some have complimented her beauty in the comment thread, I can think of stronger reasons to approve of her as an individual, certainly as a wonderful and inspired and really courageous artist, but indeed she is looking superb here. I wish her long life, and a continuing evolution as an artist to always keep track of.
See, now I'm conflicted: she is a profoundly gifted pianist and I want her to play, but now, having listened to her speak I don't want her to stop talking. She is bewitching.
It's how most intelligent musicians talk, articulation skills mastered, because you can't talk to other musicians without knowing how to speak the hidden, somewhat "elven" language, that you learn in music college. The people that don't understand the language just focus on how beautiful someone looks or how sexy their voice sounds, go figure
I have been fascinated by stoic might in Bram’s second concerto and again she proved epic power under her fingertips to give piano ability to be some unreal medium between Bach and real organ in Chaconne today in 21 century! Any peace become revelation!!!❤
Such a gifted artist. And a beautiful woman. And so philosophical and articulate about the role of the artist. And she started piano at age EIGHT! Her meteoric ascent during those early years must have absolutely astonished her parents!!
she says she's not afraid to hit it. that is, she plays with emphasis when required. i call it banging away. it is what van cliburn did. he would almost leave his seat and fall with his whole body. banging away when needed defines the physical strength needed to play this and most instruments. she also draws the respect of conductor and orchestra. few do it. a most impressive individual and one who should not limit her accomplishment to music. the world needs more like her.
My Mom is a pianist, and she calls it “dropping the weight into the keys.” ‘Banging away” is not what someone who does it right is doing. Most pianists aren’t doing it right and are hitting at the keys, and it doesn’t sound good.
Finally, an artist speaks of channeling. All the practice and all the hours are for nothing unless you can open your mind as a conduit for the flow of the music or whatever your artistic expression happens to be, always know that the music doesn't come from you but through you.
Guitarist Michael Hedges said very much the same thing. He said, "I can't try to be good. I can only try to be present so that which speaks to me can speak through me."
Comme dans toutes ses interviews, cette femme, cette artiste d’exception est sublime et d’une intelligence juste magnifique; son expression et sa justesse de propos, vont avec sa grâce !

Love her. Her Rach 2 is beyond sublime. It was how I discovered her on YT. An exquisite performance by all. And it’s great to see her here being so down to earth and accessible.
Thank you too, to the interviewer. Did his job so well that we focus on Helene. One thing where she is not necessarily correct is at 25:02 . She refers to a connection between the world of the composer and the listener. In her interpretation of the Brahms PC1 she transcends that. Brahms has drawn a profound tenderness and put it to music. It seems to me that she and Brahms were both 'mediums' and she has felt (far beyond the notes on the page) this world of tender beauty and so that is what comes out and the listener is reduced to tears from a message that has passed through Brahms, the Conductor, Orchestra, and Helene.
Wonderful interview. Very classy and talented musical artist....love to listen and watch Ms HG....both young and more mature...so good🙂..love her Brahms PCs ....it’s great that she shares her thoughts with us....we can appreciate her art and the genius of the composer she performs that much more.....
Hélène Grimaud is a gifted personality, able to give us a model of creativity, through her main commitment, Music. And her love of Wolves, avec tous les sens aigus.
I have had the privilege of seeing Helene live three times in the last year. In December of 2022 at Carnegie Hall, April of 2023 in Disney Hall in Los Angeles and in July 2023 at Caramoor in Katonah NY. All three were beyond my wildest expectations. She was transcendent and time truly did stand still in her performances. She was uniquely at one with each audience and they responded with thunderous acclamation.
She is like a demure lady but when she plays the piano she sends emotions through her playing that its really quite astounding!! Stirs up so much emotion. Truly gifted.
Helene is my favorite pianist (there are so many good ones!) and she embodies everything I like about classical music, the only music that appeals to me anymore.
She is very truthful. She says she is an interpreter, a medium between the composer and the listener. So she is very truthful also musically and strives to be a documentary player of traditional classically composed music. Since she is so trustworthy she should research little known and little played composers of the Baroque Era and play on their instrument of choice, the Harpsichord and the Organ and lift their obscurity up to recognition and inform the listeners with new musical enjoyment and knowledge and be a beacon of knowledge of that music which is relatively hidden from listeners.
well, if Helene can say that Bach is the greatest of all musical geniuses, I suppose I can feel justified in continuing to practice WTK Books 1 & 2 on a regular basis. Thanks Helene! No snark intended. Just sheer admiration and a touch of adulation.
I see this is from 2014 but from which country? Hélène's an inspiration to me. Hearing her interpretation of the Mozart Piano Concerto No.23 on the radio in November 2016 changed my life. I thought it had to be a man playing. I love her commitment to humility as the medium between composer and audience. Thank you for posting.
Such a great interview! She is not only talented for playing the piano, but also for her speaking. The essense of her music might stem from her heartwaming, thoughtful mind.
She reminds me of footage I've seen of Nadia Boulanger-- a kind of distinctively French ability to just lose oneself in music, a belief in un-self-conscious spiritual communion with the composer. But in a very feminine way. Intellect, emotions and physicality all in perfect harmony. She starts playing, and its as if no other act, physical or otherwise, could be more natural to her. And a complete transcendence of any tension between the spiritual and the physical -- all seamlessly united, and as if it's only in this activity that she achieves perfect wholeness, and perfect happiness. It's very French-feminine.
I suppose one thing has nothing to do with the other, but... Buniatishvili, and many compare her to Grimaud, is intellectually and musically a child. Grimaud understands composition and the piano.
