    Adrian Belew is still relevant. A genius without much fanfare. Revolutionary work on his Parker.

      You have to be pretty intelligent to enjoy his music, so I figure he's got top shelf fans even if there isn't tons. Shit if Les Claypool, Trent Reznor and Danny Carey you have to be pretty good.

    He is one of the few examples of a evolving musician. If you look at, lets say Slash, he always plays the same like he is stuck in that 80's persona, where image of a musician is as important as music. Adrian transcendes that shit and plays music from year 3000.

    It's funny, every time I hear Adrian Belew, even when he's doing something by himself, it reminds me of King Crimson. I wonder who influenced who more, Adrian or Robert Fripp? King Crimson went through many stages, it's just that when Adrian joined, it seemed like he was perfect for the roll. Not like Andy Summers of the Police, and even Adrian's voice seemed right for king crimson. When did Adrian join crimson, 1979?

    The creation of the piano we know today from the piano forte, or the electric guitar from its prior forms is part of the same expansion of technology as the use of synthesizers, effects pedals, and other advances being made today. It takes a talented individual to avoid reliance upon the gimmick of each new fad, and our ability to critique its use in music should evolve with it. To that end, I appreciate musicians like Fripp or Belew as they can guide the modern listener away from gimmicks.

      +Ivan G. He doesn't even use so many pedals. He doesn't have too much going on on the floor (compared to other guitarists who have twice the size of his pedalboard and don't get near as crazy as he does), he's running the guitar through the fractal, in which he created hundreds of sounds, and then goes into the laptop, in which he creates the loops with ableton. And then it's all about the skills and imagination

    Adrian Belew is an intelligent musician: he cleverly finds the balance between technique and melodies, so he can really concentrate on music without getting lost in the labyrinth of technique and stupid speed, not being similar to someone like John Petrucci or Yngwie Malmsteen. They are very talented and highly qualified guitarists, having made quite a few pieces of good music, but they (too) often become the victims of their own technical abilities. Adrian Belew can totally control his instrument, while as for the latter ones, it is their instruments that control them. Simply said, they are boring if you listen to more than two guitar solos by them. However, if you enjoy Adrian Belew’s music (and I think it requires some intelligence as well), you’ll never get bored of it, because he knows that you can play a musical instrument very well without needing to show it by every note. But it’s just my opinion. :)

  • @danopticon
    @danopticon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If, as I suspect, that’s a MIDI pickup at the neck of Belew’s Parker, then it‘s delivering really good clean high-end and low-end guitar tones in addition to delivering its MIDI magic, which is pretty unusual for a MIDI pickup. Or maybe it’s a Sustainiac, in which case its clean guitar tones still sound unusually good, plus Belew is using the Sustainiac and some pedalboard magic to pull those cello sounds out of his Parker. Either way, Sutainiac and MIDI pickups often fall short performance-wise at clean guitar tones, but this Parker has round chiming Strat-like clean tones and really incredible sustain, and from the looks of the neck pickup either the sustain or some of that violin and cello wizardry may be getting toggled partly onboard and not just through pedals or a heavy through-neck build and some kind of magic tonewood.
    I guess I’m saying, I don’t generally like a guitar cluttered with bells and whistles: I’ve gotten hooked on Telecaster-like simplicity at the one end, and at the other end of the scale the most I like is still maybe a pretty simple straightforward Gibson SG with three humbuckers, tops, where maybe two have coil splits and maybe there’s a fourth extra pickup, a piezo, hidden somewhere under the bridge. That’s the most electronics built into one guitar that I’ve fiddled with where the results still felt successful; beyond that, the more fussily over-engineered guitars I’ve played are great at delivering novelties, but start failing at delivering guitar music.
    However, this Parker sounds and kinda looks like it may have more under the hood than would at first glance appear, but without being covered in switches and knobs, and while still delivering a really good underlying baseline guitar sound. I may need to check one of these out! Adrian Belew, I hope you are sponsored and well-compensated, because I think you’ve just sold me one of Parker’s products! 😉

    I'm listening to the piece right now, so I won't comment directly on it, but I have to disagree with your main point. I believe the comparison you make between the creation of music and the completion of a competitive event is inappropriate. While a vast expanse of available technology can certainly entrap a musician in world where they believe that each pedal or effect must be utilized, its utility should be a welcome part of music development.

    Ultimately though, the end result of any toying with any musical device including defined instruments, or those yet to be deemed such, say synthesizers or the use of sampling, should be music. To me, music should convey something to the listener through whatever means the artist wishes. His or her work will of course be judged and evaluated, but it is still at the very least an attempt to express something that lacks the measured quality of a timed foot race.
