How to make your home look expensive... Invest in high end high quality items... 🤣 Thanks for that gold nugget

I know it sounds silly! Yes. I get it, but just spend more on the bigger items or things that you use a lot. Like if you buy a $3000 higher quality couch and have it for 20 years, that's better than spending $1000 on a poor quality couch and having to replace it every 4 years. Or she said that she loves snuggling with a beautiful pillow- so she spends more on those. :-)

It's fascinating that people are up in arms over this video. I think the majority of you may be misreading the intention. I appreciate the part of the video where she talks about getting acquainted with quality pieces, whether it's clothing or furniture. It makes so much sense, really. And, that has nothing to do with spending a ton of money, but with helping you choose items wisely. Good video!

It's the same principle with fashion. When I worked years ago I would save and save to buy an expensive suit or shoes that would last for long time but always look high end. Then you add a little less expensive blouse or jewelry and still look classy.

  • @PaxPixie

I'm a professional home stager in Dallas and I definitely shop Facebook Marketplace for some of my inventory as well as light fixtures. I've staged a ton of homes with super dated light fixtures and I've found them replacements for pennies on the dollar because there are a ton of wealthy housewives in the area who like to re-do their entire house every year or two and they just want to get rid of the "old" as fast as possible. I also agree with the rest of the tips mentioned. Another tip is layering your linens. If you can't afford a lot, get a neutral "bed in a bag" and then add some decorative pillows and an additional blanket in a solid color to break up the "matchy" feel. It feels like you gathered the pieces over time instead of just getting a cheap "set".

Love the comment about visiting high end shops and restaurants to get aquatinted with the textures and look of pieces even if you don’t buy. I have educated myself for years doing that and been able to find very similar looks for less money at other shops or even garage sales.

Exactly! I make a day just visiting model homes and taking pictures. So many wonderful ideas that can easily be done on a budget. Then after I've gathered my model home information and pictures I hit Goodwill, thrift stores, and garage sales. I buy furniture, pictures, vases in charity shops in towns where there's rich people living. They donate beautiful, expensive things that you can then purchase for fraction of the price and no one has to know they're second hand if you keep them nicely styled with matching colour tonation.

Same! However, I really like to group small things together to make a larger impact. Not everywhere because I don't want my house to look like a flea market! :-) However, displaying a collection of like items on a shelf or a grouping of smaller photos on the wall makes me happy. Sometimes, I also pile a few books on a table under a lamp or vase to make it look even larger. I'm constantly moving my décor around my house because I get bored of seeing the same things and just putting them in a new place freshens up the way my house feels.

All the tips are so on-point. My husband and I downsized from a 2-story home to a condo. We already had a quality bedroom set so we sold everything in the home. Then we bought two quality pieces, the couch and dining table for the condo. We've been here 4 years and now can't afford to continue decorating, but the key pieces makes it so we really don't notice that it's not complete. Just the downsizing and then maintaining the key pieces to keep looking like new is such a mental stress reliever. Thanks for all your info and thanks for letting me share ❤💚💜💙💛

I believe that great decorators break the rules because they, too, know the rules so well. In both cases, these artists know which rules to break and they are careful to only break one or two rules at a time. The bulk of their work follows the rules to perfection. Nice video!

I love what you said about getting the right pieces for the house/room instead of bringing furniture from previous homes with us. My husband and I are in late 20’s/early 30’s so we didn’t have much when we bought our first house and ended up buying some of the furniture from previous owner just to have something functional for the space...-and we don’t actually like any of the pieces! The entire space is outdated and very “traditional”. Younger people sometimes don’t have a lot of money to spend on designing their home so what is your advice for us first time home owners? Would you save up and do each room one at a time? I tend to blow my money on those “instant gratification” decor items like pillows or blankets or floral or seasonal items, instead of saving for a quality piece of furniture because not only is it cheaper, but I also have two babies under 2 years old.

I got married when I was 19 and had a baby on my hip by 21... and then we moved 23 times in 17 years so I really do understand! I always focused on bang for buck with paint and a sofa that would fit pretty much anywhere and then went to goodwill, garage sales, and estate sales for the rest. You can find some great deals that way! It's where my resourcefulness stems from for sure! When you don't have a lot of money a can of spray paint is your best friend! And minimalism is just fine too! :-) H&M Home is a great source for inexpensive accessories too, though I didn't have that option back then! My husband and I always reminded ourselves that our home didn't need to look like someone who had been in their house for 20 years and that allowing it to develop over time was really the most fun anyways!

@@HouseofValentina That is awesome advice! Most of furniture we own is from Ikea which we are very happy with, but also have a few pieces from the previous home owners that I wanted to get rid of. We have dressers/nightstands we are using for now, but plan on getting rid of because the drawers come come off their tracks which is a safety issue for us.. But I love how you've painting things to make them fit your style, and I think that is such good advice for young people so they don't have to choose between buying new furniture that's not in their budget or having an empty house. Your couch advice is also good. I got suckered into buying this brown leather reclining sofa because it was much cheaper than the white cloud modular RH or a similar one from Pottery Barn I wanted, not that I have a RH budget but a girl can dream! :) But also, everyone warned me that babies and toddlers will destroy a white couch, and I got brown leather because it went with the current style of the home. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and I need that white fluffy couch in my life! The ones I've seen at Pottery Barn with ottomans that you can pull up allow everyone to snuggle together and I feel like they are easy to style around and are just so cozy. The recliner sofas by design force everyone to be seated where the foot rest expands, which is on complete opposite ends of the couch. Which means no snuggles. :( I should have just purchased what I wanted instead of getting sucked into the yellow/brown traditional style vortex...But at least we are working on getting the walls in the house painted after living here for two years! We finally get to say goodbye to the 80's yellow! BTW did you use that Polar Bear Behr for the white walls in your family room? I noticed it was on your Pinterest "shop" board but wasn't sure if that's what you used for a client's home or your own. Thank you so much for making all of these super awesome and inspiring videos!!! I've written down notes from every single one I have watched so far!! Your style is classy with just the right amount of edginess so that everything looks very balanced and fresh.

Loved all the "hoarder" photos! I'm not sure how you got Christopher Lowel in one! Lol. I have a hard time with to much decor. I got rid of most and just got a few large pieces to replace. It looks much better. Agree with everything. 😊

Those drawers weren't just dueling, they wouldn't even open when the other was closed. One needs to be glued shut.

Just noticing your plants as you take me on a tour. Your busy lifestyle doesn't allow much time to care for plants however you obviously love the natural green, living things. So I just have a suggestion you might like. The "ZZ" plant is almost maintenance free. You just need to put a bit of water from time to time to keep it alive. It will almost survive on air it seems. Doesn't require a lot of light. Check your garden store . I have one on my desk at work and it's perfect and also on my bedside table. And, that really is the name of the plant Z Z .

The tips about decluttering and cleaning the place/maintening is SO TRUE! Make a huge difference. I have one question. What would you say about people living in a rental apartment? I wouldn't buy expensive stuff but save the money for a home in the futur. And I wouldn't spend also for renovations when I am not the owner so I would likely go for diys, like contact paper on kitchen countertops or paint the walls. Diys would be fine then? Of course only those you can do or ask the owner for some changes if possible.

When you show properly decorated rooms could some of them be on a small budget scale instead of large high end decor?

I like your idea of going to high end stores to look for quality in those items. At least to have an idea of what you want on your space.
