I had a HPI Savage 21, 15+ years ago. It was a blast had so much fun with it. Think it was the right rear wheel nut would always spin off and the wheel would fall off.
I know you bought this some time ago and not to put any salt in your wounds but it is now selling on HRP for $559.99 on HRP. HPI hasn't done much on this truck since the first release. It's one of those trucks that needs some changes before taking out for that first run. I hope you keep it going and don't shelve it but that $800 price point would give me second thoughts too.

I've stripped hubs before and used liquid weld to reshape the hubs. Use a small drill bit and put dimples on the hub walls to give the liquid weld something to bite onto. Fill hub with a little liquid weld. Press the metal hub insert into hub until it fully bottoms out and the liquid weld squeezes out. Wipe excess. When fully dry, the hub inserts should knock back out with a small hammer and punch. Haven't had a problem since. 👍🏼
HPI fan boy here. I have been away from the hobby for past 8 years. I owned 21 RC's between 2006 and 2013 and Aarma wasn't even a contender back when I left this hobby. I used to own a 2006 savage x 4.6 and it was as tough as a Rhino . Apart from stripped nylon spur gears , that truck had no other major flaw. Bought a 2010 savage flux which I still own and that thing has never broken anything except bodies because with so much power it would land on its back and just slide on hot asphalt. Now when i am taking interest in the hobby again , its Sad to see HPI lacking behind the competition . I saw their web page and it hardly have anything anymore to compete against Traxxas and Aarma. Heck even Redcat has more attractive line up compared to HPI. I really hope HPI comes back and comes back strong.
I have the Flux HP. The spur gear is mounted to the slipper clutch and the esc on my flux hp was a mamba monster. Motor was a 2200kv. My esc when connected worked with the castle creations programming software but my computer shows the ESC as a HPI product. It is insanely powerful and a lot of fun. FYI. Mine is a first gen savage flux hp and it still rips. I did forget to unplug the batteries one year and that fried my esc. I stripped the pinion but it can with a larger pinion so that is still on it. I have blew a few differential gears but found some heavy duty sets and also after about 10 years of owning it I finally blew a transmission gear. No problems with my wheels falling off. Only blew a couple tires off the rims. And the last things was I bent the TVP chassis plates at the back due to huge jumps! Now if only I had a FLUX XL. That would be sick! I am Traxxas at heart but the Savage line up (back in the day) are phenomenal. I own over 10 savages from different generations starting with the first gen and I have a savage XS that is just a ripper! Unfortunately it is in pieces. I have not played with any of them in many years. Since I got my Xmaxx and Redcat Gen2 crawler. But have not used those in about a year. The new products that are out now are much more robust that the old tech I have. But I am not seeing much difference in power systems. I wonder what the next level of power systems will be. Thanks for the vlogs man! Glad you did this Flux XL review. Great reminder of what I got in my garage. Maybe one day I will get to finish my custom first gen Tmaxx, or my custom original axial AX-10 crawler.
It’s old school. Inspect it, tighten and loctite set screws, wheel nuts and whatever you see. I have one and I went through it before I ran it and had zero problems.
This is the first RTR I have ever had. Normally, I buy kits and build them. I went over the entire kit and found tons of loose bolts and nuts. The wheel nuts were the loosest of them all. If he didn't pre check the kit it's no wonder they came off. I did buy the 17mm hex upgrade kit and from what I've found, the truck needs a central diff due to weak pot metal gears in front and rear diffs. I plan on upgrading the gears as well. But, for the price this should be standard on the truck to start with.
Man, I remember owning the Savage Flux Hp long before the x-xmaxx came into existence and the flux was awesome for its time. Hop it up with the thicker twin vertical plate chassis and some alza racing stuff to beef up the bulkheads and drivetrain and you had a pretty good truck that could take a hit. The twin vertical plate chassis is the only aluminum chassis that would not bend after huge sends so i think thats the one cool thing about the hpi. Otherwise, they're a bit behind on innovation but its a good old school basher
Love mine, got it on sale, send it all day long on 4s with no issues. I did upgrade the 17mm nut things to hotracing (that old tech is ok for nitro but not great for electric torque). Fantastic onsale purchase to if you enjoy savages. Most componets are interchangable. Kinda a no-brainer in that regard. You can get a centerdiff to take 3s better, which will save the diffs. Gotta support hpi, im always interested in what they come up with. The wr8 nitro is amazing fun!!!! I need the flux now 😆
Thanks, I had no idea HPI had come out with a true 17mm wheel hex kit (HPI 114341). When I got my Savage Flux HP way back in they day I used Vorza 17mm hex hubs and 5mm locknuts to do the same thing...but the Vorza used a 3mm pin so the stock hardened stub axle 2.5mm pin bore had to be drilled to accept that larger 3mm pin. Hope Mark picks up the 17mm kit and runs the truck again...would like to see another video of it.

I have the same truck lock tight the wheel nuts that what i did and run 4s np here but i have been thinking about convertering it over savage part here are hard to in my hobby shop to but there the only rc truck differential i have never blowen about bit i do run 4s most of the time
I've built a few savage trucks, and yes they need a lot of upgrades/mods to make them bombproof. My personal flux is built using parts from HPI, Losi, Ofna, Traxxas. Alza racing used to make some excellent TVP's and great center diff mount. Can't forget FLM, awesome bulkheads.

G'day Mark yeah you can get Savage adjustable top camber links it's only available as a hot up but it worth it wait. They fly aye the week point is the wheels and centre dog bones. Lol I use Traxxas 17mm blue hex like 4+4 Slash conversion and you have to grind a bit off the back of them that works well or get Super 5 SC extended Baja hubs fit strait on and Baja wheels tyres a little on the big side but still cool. Great video mate 👍👍

Mark to a experienced hobbyist like you this is no big deal. But honestly it's a good reminder to not just tighten your wheel nuts but use blue threadlock. This has happened to me before and since then I have added the blue loctite as a must for my pre run checklist. Not judging you but just saying it was easily preventable in the future. And i get that we shouldn't have to do things like blue loctite to keep wheels from coming off but it does prevent it in the future 👍🏻
If they're still around there's a store called TCS the crawler store, they made a conversion for the Savage the regular Savage and it turned it into a Fifth Scale, I wonder if they make an electric conversion or the Savage XL big block Nitro version I'll have to look into that, but I did do the crawler stores 5th scale chassis for the Savage monster truck and it turned out great check it out if you get a chance see if they're still around.
Like the body. I wasn't a big fan of the first gen E-Savage only because the chassy trapped alot of debree and small rocks. Hope you can up-grade the hubs.
I have been baching a Savage XL (now brushless converted) for close to 15 years. I still have not broken a single arm. I have however broken EVERY SINGLE ONE of my steering knuckles (Upright Set #85048)

The thing with this model you have is that it doesnt have a center diff… thats why it feels so much powerful and will destroy all diffs. The new XL (the black one) does come with a center diff, so it drives much more like a truggy and is more reliable
There’s that fine line of having too much power and enough power to have fun! I’ve built a couple rigs with too much power! End up working on them more than running them! HPI was the one to have back in the day! They have a following but not like Traxxas or Arrma
I had a E savage and it was like crazy tough. I used to show my friends I can throw it as high as I wanted and it was so heavy. And didn't break. Ultimately I let a friend drive it . Right into a fire hydrant. Bent a little bit didn't break . Stripped motor screws lol

Do these new ones have all right hand threads on the wheel nuts? I have the original savage & they came with left & right hand threads for the wheels to help keep them from backing off. I think getting true 17mm hexes will fix that problem pretty good for you. I'm sure you can find some on eBay for it.
Had one, fixing anything felt like a nightmare, not a fan of the TVP (twin vertical plate) setup. Felt way overpowered, so I ran it on 4s. Also had to use straps around the battery boxes, had multiple eject. Also, my wheel nuts kept flying off. (Edit: Just finished the vid, sounds about right)
I owned one when first released centre gearbox was a nightmare . Setting slipper clutch was a must and yep 4s was the go mate. Swapping those soft floppy tyres was big help also
@@MarkSantaMaria you wouldn't have known, my friend sent it to me in pieces, I rebuilt it completely, such a nightmare. Loctite every screw grubs especially, and then I sent it back to him after a couple runs. Now he loves it on 4s after I fixed it, lol

Jenny’s rc Carrie’s a lot of parts and the HRP website Carrie’s HPI and tons of parts. Fix it up with the 17mm hex conversion and toss some tires on from one of your other rigs and go have fun. You won’t be disappointed

I would definitely fix now (I just can't leave them broke) then put in storage or maybe sell it or trade it, usually I wouldn't get rid of a R/C but It's a HPI dump it.....but cool vid👍👍
i got 30 secs and one full trigger pull before it stripped the 17mm hex socket, cant find aluminum wheel locks in 3.5 inchs so i am forced to go back to plastic
I have an HPI savage flux hp and that thing is not very strong. I was out bashing one day and I did a speed run on some grass then i heard clicking then I turned over the truck to inspect then gave it a bit of throttle then the transmission blew out
I am new to the brushless motors. I am not new to the hobby. But mostly into nitro. I am building a brushless rc drag car and a brushless slash 2wd. Is a higher kv motor faster than a lower kv motor?

Hi Mark, you have this kit-» hpi#160141, will fix the popping off wheels problem, but later you will have problems on the diffs, a car with that level off power needs a center diff, so you would need a center diff conversion kit...
is this a bad idea, epoxy a hex nut into the wheel and that would save the wheel. Works well if you got enough spares and I have a hard time thinking mark doesn't have just a few spares laying around. Oh and fix those awful shocks, bounce bounce!
You have to give credit to Traxxas for TRUE out of the box operation. I just got back into RC after a 30 year hiatus and I have a Sledge and a Slash Ultimate. I’ve been beating the hell out of these for months. From dirt, to gravel to cement. Both take everything. So far I’ve only torn the wing off the Sledge a couple times. Both times just screwed it back in and kept going. For $800 I think it’s fair to expect the same type of reliability out of this thing. Thanks for taking the bullet for everyone else Mark!

V2 flux has a bunch of updates to the issues you pointed out in the beginning of the video. Plus the only real savage in my opinion is the nitro savage. I have about 4 of them currently and one is a twin engine. Twin lrp .28. That truck is a blast.
I practically begged HPI not to price this model and the new Savage X & XL this high because of almost exactly what you said. I even have the emails I sent to them and their reply. They should of been priced just slightly ($25-$50) overt the MAXX. It absolutely have to be priced less than the Kraton EX.
It's more like a 6 scale instead of a 5th scale I had a Gen. 2 savage back in the early 2 thousands every single thing I could put billit on it was billit aluminum even the billet 3 speed transmission Box all steel gears that thing was a tank was one of the toughest R c's I ever owned
It’s really no faster than a kraton or erevo. It’s be cause it has no center diff, just a slipper clutch, so it’s it’s full power front and back, unlike a center diff car which bleeds most power to the front, so it just seems faster

Like the old emaxx. They never went to the 17mm hexes and the power will just destroy the wheel hexes as soon as the nuts came loose. They never evolved with the power of the newer motors
HPI always looked like some contraption a drunk guy built in his basement with mix-matched parts held together by duct straps, lol. I had an old HPI RS4 Nitro I forgot to set up a fail-safe and on race day it went out of control almost a whole tank as no one could catch it bouncing off pipe barriers at 40mph. People scattered like flies running for their lives. 😂 It was possessed by the spectrum debil.

Looks like it had a case of premature ejection? 🤣🤣🤣 In any case, you have the old model there, they have an updated version called the V2.
I had to buy losi 17mm wheel hexes to throw on my nitro savage. worked just fine after that and never had an issue

It's not even a standing backflip. You did it on a roll! It was moving forward and you still did a backflip! That's some mega grip / power!

That is the older model savage XL. There is a V2 version out with updates. I wish you would have gotten the newer one.

There’s that fine line of having too much power and enough power to have fun! I’ve built a couple rigs with too much power! End up working on them more than running them! HPI was the one to have back in the day! They have a following but not like Traxxas or Arrma
I had a E savage and it was like crazy tough. I used to show my friends I can throw it as high as I wanted and it was so heavy. And didn't break. Ultimately I let a friend drive it . Right into a fire hydrant. Bent a little bit didn't break . Stripped motor screws lol
hahaha... fire hydrants arent very forgiving.

Do these new ones have all right hand threads on the wheel nuts? I have the original savage & they came with left & right hand threads for the wheels to help keep them from backing off.
I think getting true 17mm hexes will fix that problem pretty good for you. I'm sure you can find some on eBay for it.
Had one, fixing anything felt like a nightmare, not a fan of the TVP (twin vertical plate) setup. Felt way overpowered, so I ran it on 4s. Also had to use straps around the battery boxes, had multiple eject. Also, my wheel nuts kept flying off. (Edit: Just finished the vid, sounds about right)
I owned one when first released centre gearbox was a nightmare . Setting slipper clutch was a must and yep 4s was the go mate. Swapping those soft floppy tyres was big help also

@@MarkSantaMaria you wouldn't have known, my friend sent it to me in pieces, I rebuilt it completely, such a nightmare. Loctite every screw grubs especially, and then I sent it back to him after a couple runs. Now he loves it on 4s after I fixed it, lol

Jenny’s rc Carrie’s a lot of parts and the HRP website Carrie’s HPI and tons of parts. Fix it up with the 17mm hex conversion and toss some tires on from one of your other rigs and go have fun. You won’t be disappointed

i got 30 secs and one full trigger pull before it stripped the 17mm hex socket, cant find aluminum wheel locks in 3.5 inchs so i am forced to go back to plastic

I have an HPI savage flux hp and that thing is not very strong. I was out bashing one day and I did a speed run on some grass then i heard clicking then I turned over the truck to inspect then gave it a bit of throttle then the transmission blew out

I am new to the brushless motors. I am not new to the hobby. But mostly into nitro. I am building a brushless rc drag car and a brushless slash 2wd. Is a higher kv motor faster than a lower kv motor?
higher kv spins faster but less low end torque.

Hi Mark, you have this kit-» hpi#160141, will fix the popping off wheels problem, but later you will have problems on the diffs, a car with that level off power needs a center diff, so you would need a center diff conversion kit...

Sounds like, it would be better to run it on 4s lipo & gear up a little. With a 1/8 monster truck 👍🏻
is this a bad idea, epoxy a hex nut into the wheel and that would save the wheel. Works well if you got enough spares and I have a hard time thinking mark doesn't have just a few spares laying around. Oh and fix those awful shocks, bounce bounce!
You need a nitro hpi Savage now.
Unfortunately, you got the Savage XL that is last gen. The current gen comes with real truggy style 17mm hexes and wheel nuts that work much better.
Local shop has these discounted at $360…..tempting but the exposed gears and the tiny wheel nuts make me hesitant.

You have to give credit to Traxxas for TRUE out of the box operation. I just got back into RC after a 30 year hiatus and I have a Sledge and a Slash Ultimate. I’ve been beating the hell out of these for months. From dirt, to gravel to cement. Both take everything. So far I’ve only torn the wing off the Sledge a couple times. Both times just screwed it back in and kept going. For $800 I think it’s fair to expect the same type of reliability out of this thing. Thanks for taking the bullet for everyone else Mark!

V2 flux has a bunch of updates to the issues you pointed out in the beginning of the video. Plus the only real savage in my opinion is the nitro savage. I have about 4 of them currently and one is a twin engine. Twin lrp .28. That truck is a blast.

I practically begged HPI not to price this model and the new Savage X & XL this high because of almost exactly what you said. I even have the emails I sent to them and their reply.
They should of been priced just slightly ($25-$50) overt the MAXX. It absolutely have to be priced less than the Kraton EX.
I can appreciate the Xl but it prefer the X. Less weight, less leverage on everything and a better handling truck.

It's more like a 6 scale instead of a 5th scale I had a Gen. 2 savage back in the early 2 thousands every single thing I could put billit on it was billit aluminum even the billet 3 speed transmission Box all steel gears that thing was a tank was one of the toughest R c's I ever owned
It’s really no faster than a kraton or erevo. It’s be cause it has no center diff, just a slipper clutch, so it’s it’s full power front and back, unlike a center diff car which bleeds most power to the front, so it just seems faster
Agreed... the center diff really calms these high powered cars down.

Like the old emaxx. They never went to the 17mm hexes and the power will just destroy the wheel hexes as soon as the nuts came loose. They never evolved with the power of the newer motors
HPI always looked like some contraption a drunk guy built in his basement with mix-matched parts held together by duct straps, lol. I had an old HPI RS4 Nitro I forgot to set up a fail-safe and on race day it went out of control almost a whole tank as no one could catch it bouncing off pipe barriers at 40mph. People scattered like flies running for their lives. 😂 It was possessed by the spectrum debil.
In todays standards of rc the savage is very poor, had the savage flux a few years ago and every run I had a bent shock rod
