The "historian's" words in this documentary are little more than a sarcastic comment on the sculpture park's sad history: The entire german population, the majority of residents of Memel, had no choice but to flee their homes ahead of the Soviet onslaught in 1944. Soviets, who did not distiguish between german civilian or military soon after occupied the city facing little german resistance. According to records only 6 germans remained registered in the city at that time. Immediately after the fall of the city the Soviets started destroying and dismantling all german cultural sites including the historical cemetery of Memel (nowadays sculpture park). Once the cemetery was dismantled they built a soviet war memorial, a soviet military cemetery, and a few years later a socialistic sculpture park right on top of it. What happened to the remains of the tens of thousands former residents of Memel who were put to rest in the city cemetery: so far I couldnt find any information on that - but I suspect the forcibly removed residents of Memel were unable to retrieve any of their relatives remains. Lets dance and sing in the sculpture park! Vae Victis!
