    I just tried this technique with my flighty Arab (who has been known to jump at his own shadow). It worked perfectly. Within 10 minutes he had totally transformed. After the initial flight response, he started to become curious. I kept removing the bag as suggested and there was one point where he took a couple of steps forwards and was trying to look behind me at where it had gone. His energy totally changed from that point onwards. At the end of the session, he was stood between two posts that had plastic bags attached (flapping in the wind), whilst I swung the bag around like a crazy person next to him…. He didn’t even bat an eyelid. Thank you, super helpful.

      One of my flighty Arabs spooks if he sees pee on the ground but thinks plastic bags are far him to play with. He has from the first time he saw one.

    I love your drama free approach. My 17 year old Arab gelding isn't bothered by huge flapping tarps, but is scared stiff of little plastic bags traveling on the ground with the wind. His flight response kicks in and he does a jive, although he is a super decent guy and listens to me even when he is seemingly terrified, if I keep a cool head and don't make him more anxious by getting wound up and tense myself. He gets used to a plastic bag in one place, but when moved 20 feet it is a totally new terror. I will continue to watch your videos to get more insight into all this.

    Nice video. I only found it because my girlfriend told me horses were afraid of bags so I was looking for a video that showed that.
    But I ended up watching the whole thing anyway.

    Yes, in fact you would want to make sure you've done the whip slapping etc BEFORE you ever attempt this. Like most things, this only works if everything leading up to it has been addressed correctly.

    Nice twist to the more full on way of desensitizing. I like the way the horse is free to move and come towards the scary object and not us forcing things onto him. looks to be no stress.

    That was funny when you wanted to have the horse step to the bag for the first time, you were looking at the camera and stepped across, the horse stepped in to find the bag just like you wanted. Lol. Great video Warrick.

    I had a pony in the show ring, the kids were lined up for the judge and suddenly a plastic bag was flying right towards the ring. We all stood holding our breath, hoping a bunch of horses and ponies didn't panic, as we were....Then I could see my boy looking for the bag, as if he being flown in his treats. That made all the others jus chill.

  • @WarwickSchiller
    @WarwickSchiller  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You only take the plastic bag away while they lack a bit of confidence. Once they are curious and want to explore the bag, THEN you leave it still and let them sniff it. If you do they while they are still a little cautious, they sniff the bag, then blow out, moves the bag, startles them, and you have set you and your horse back a step.

    I was working with my 3.5 yr old gelding today.playing around with a carrier bag. My question is should you do work with him while is is moving (on lead rope) as well as stood still? The reason I ask Is because when I had him moving and flicked the bag over his back he stopped and wouldn't move until I took it away. I'm a new horse owner and would like to know I'm doing the right thing with him. I enjoy watching your videos and have used what I see with my boy. Keep up the good work :)

    Would this work with just a whip slapping on the ground in the beginning? I have a VERY spooky 9 yo OTTB and he is pretty solid join-up, change directions and following me w/t loose but he has little trust in his rider/handler. He'll leap out of his skin at squirrels, dogs, plastic bags, horses jumping near him...etc. I'm going to start doing the pointing thing with him to get him going, and I'm going to do more ground work with him. Any suggestions on good desensitization exercises?

    You must remember that a horse is a prey animal. In the wild when they look in the bushes at a scary thing that scary thing comes along and eats it. By taking it away from the horse you are teaching it that it is no threat to them.

    Good to know. :) and he's a LOT better(4 days later) with the whip slapping on the ground but he still isn't really relaxed(his head is still up but his hind leg is cocked sometimes). How long does it typically take to get them to get over their fear? I think he's been abused because he used to try to bolt as soon as i picked up a whip and place it gently on his shoulder from the ground. What other ground exercises should he have already known b4 i tried the whip desensitization w/him? Thanks!

    I just bought my 15 year old warmblood mare. She is already terrified of plastic and plastic bags, to the point that she runs from her stall when we go in to dump the sawdust pellets and she has no self-preservation instinct when doing it. We end up knocking on the stall door, showing her the bag and letting her walk out quietly before we dump. Would this technique work for her since it is already such a big deal? Someone said give her a treat every time she sees a bag. Does that work? Thanks

    Taylor, I would say your desensitizing up until that point was not good. The horse in this video was scared to death of everything when I first started, and the plastic bag would have been too big a thing to start with. Start small and work your way up.

      sue mcfarlane my horses in Texas will kill coyotes and dogs they don't know. They've never been stable kept though, and my alpha mare was wild till she was 2. They're very territorial, I've seen fawns that were bed down in the horses' pasture by whitetail Does that I've even spied grazing alongside my horses. I wouldn't have known the fawns were there except the horses starting snorting and raising their tails and heads at me and my dog, standing their ground and taking aggressive postures towards us. Also, they charged my neighbors peacocks the first time they saw them while I was riding on the road, those peacocks were minding their own business, not walking away from or towards us. Though I know they are more flighty than donkeys or mules.

  • @MrTheHaharvey
    @MrTheHaharvey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Walking away, swishing the bag, the lead line from you to the horse, was long enough that, IF the horse chose to turn and leave... it would have been able to kick you anywhere it wanted to. BE careful of the length of lead, that is all.

  • @marh122

    Hey guys, I am really into desensitizing horses, but I have one question in my mind on which I dont know the answer :(. How do you renew desensitized horse if he is not reacting to your foot when you are on him ? The other day I was in riding school and tried one horse which did not respond to legs. I had to like kick him and trainer said it works like that. Which I dont understand because my other horse reacts to cues pretty easy and immediately :). So I was wondering how you can renew this ? Thanks :)

    • @alysonemery5287
      @alysonemery5287 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Desensitizing and numbing to cues are two different things. Someone did something very wrong at one point when training that horse.

    I haven't read all the comments but my question is why not try this when the horse is at liberty? The horse knows there's a lead rope, IMO, THAT's why he's following you.

    • @horsesrotflol
      @horsesrotflol 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would most likely produce the same results at liberty, but at the risk of trainer safety. On the lead, the trainer keeps sufficient control of the horse's head and is able to shut down the horse if something bad happens. At liberty the horse has ultimate freedom of movement, and a simple bolt could end very badly for horse or human. Using the lead also allows the trainer to keep the bag close to the horse, and lets the horse realize that it doesn't matter if the bag is near or far. It is quite difficult to keep a horse at liberty near a scary object, however on lead the trainer can lengthen or shorten the lead as necessary to limit flight.

    • @horsefever0558
      @horsefever0558 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't you think with a lead, there is more risk of danger (horse rearing)? On top of that, the horse is fighting against you. At liberty, if you are careful not to stand in his way, should the horse bolt off, he will not run into you (since you haven't added any pressure on him). You should try it. Many people do work at liberty (myself) and haven't been hurt once. Not sure about working with a lead, especially when you are asking for submission. My point of view

    • @horsesrotflol
      @horsesrotflol 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +horsefever0558 This is all very true, but as long as the horse is kept moving he can't rear, even on a lead. I have worked my mare at liberty many times, but not when introducing something scary. It wouldn't hurt to try I suppose, however she is a 16.2hh TBX and can be a bit difficult to keep up with when she is at liberty.

    • @horsefever0558
      @horsefever0558 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out Shawna Karasch's or Alexandra Kurland's website. They do have videos introducing horses to plastic bags, tarps and even a toy which rolls on the ground. Yes Shawna's horse bolts a few times but she makes sure she's not standing in front of him. He comes back on his own. At the end, he walks over the tarp and follows the plastic bag with confidence (that he developed on his own and not restrained). He even touches the toy while it's rolling over. Clicker training, as I see it, is wonderful in helping a horse's confidence when being introduced to new things. I believe you're in Australia. There are so many clicker trainers in Australia. You may like it (I'm sure your horses will). Have a great day!

    • @epona9166
      @epona9166 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@horsefever0558 I don't understand your fixation on doing this with a horse at liberty. If the horse was frightened and at liberty, he could just stand still and not follow the trainer. What would that accomplish? Using a lead rope with a horse that is accustomed to being led strikes me as the quickest way to accomplish the goal. Sure you could use CT, but most people don't. Either because they don't know about it, don't really understand it, or have a philosophical objection to using treats to train horses. I'm not a fan of Shawna Karasch, but for sure an admirer of Alexandra Kurland and don't think you should be invoking her name here -- unless you want to point out on what page of which of her books (or where in her videos) she recommends desensitizing a horse to a plastic bag at liberty. Finally FWIW, Warwick Schiller does appear to use CT, very selectively, to teach his horses fun tricks. But he doesn't need to use it in normal horse training, because he knows how to build confidence and rapport with horses without it.

      Then you need to do it again, probably slower, and make sure you are not scared of the horse's reaction to the bag. If you're tense, it'll affect the horse even if you're not on them.

    When I used to handle foals a lot on game I used to play was getting a empty feed bag and put half a dozen aluminium cans in it I would then leave it in the round yard and let the babies and their mums in the yard to their own devices and eventually the baby would go over to check out the bag and of corse it smelt like feed and depending on weather or not the baby was eating hard food with mum or if he was still only on milk and grass he would possibly find the bag interesting but either way as a baby he would eventually start to chew on it which would make the cans rattle which would make him jump which ment they rattled more which in turn would now make his mother spooked until on of them usually the mum would realise that the bag was not chasing them nor had it hurt them this was a great start to dcensatise them having them do the work al though it did mean that it was a missed opportunity as to you using their natural response to something for your own training benefit

    What is it about a plastic bag that's so scary to them?

    • @destinationaddictionsamsar7894
      @destinationaddictionsamsar7894 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It moves funny, makes weird noises, white is a reflective color that reflects light. Horses eyes aren't that good with the changing of lights as their eyes take longer to switch between night vision and normal vision. So horses can't really see the color white.
      At least that's my reasoning behind it.

    I always start by letting my horse, "chase" things if he's afraid of them. I make him think he can push the scary thing away from him. But he is still afraid of plastic bags. He wasn't afraid of palstic bags before, then all the sudden he was afriad of them...I suspect it was a guy at the barn. He always brought a bag of treats with him to the barn and one day he let my pony push him around and my pony bit him in the face (the guys fault). I suspect the guy punished him with the bag.

    Rubbish,,,,use approach and retreat. at the first sign of reaction take it away. Dont follow him with it, that leads to running away. That way your telling him, i see your anxiety, and i took it away. Repeat slowly, Let him move his feet himself. Approach, retreat at the first sign of reaction. ..build trust and communication.....you scaring the bejesus out of him.....hell, i wouldnt trust you....dragging me around like that waving flappy things and flooding me. Sure he eventually got it, but thats the hard way....no chance for communication whatsoever...give the horse a say in it....Read more Ray Hunt
