Hi professor, I'm a long time fan of your channel, i usually don't comment on TH-cam videos, but since i felt personally impacted by this i thought i should say something, i would like to know if you could address the fact that before the September ban announcement the Rules Committee had the habit of informing the player base when certain cards could be banned in a near future(A.K.A. putting said cards on the watch list), previously cards like Tergrid, God of Fright and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines were placed on the watch list even though they weren't banned, and as far as i know they always informed the community when they decided to put a card on the watch list(even though some times they banned cards before the card could be put on the list, like Lutri, the Spellchaser), i don't have a problem with cards like Dockside Extortionist or Nadu, Winged Wisdom being banned from the format, because even though i don't agree with that decision, at least they informed the community that the cards were being watched closely and could be banned from the format, now, what i do have a problem with is the fact that mana crypt and jeweled lotus weren't put on the watch list(or if they were the RC simply didn't informed the community about it) before they were banned, even though according to the RC themselves they were talking with WOTC about banning these cards for more than a year, i don't think this is fair to the community, the reasons they gave to the ban of jeweled lotus were true since the card was printed, and mana crypt was a known factor for more than a decade at this point, if they spent this last year talking with WOTC about banning these cards, why not inform to everyone that the cards were in the watch list? this caused people(like myself) to spend a good amount of time saving money to acquire staples of the format without knowing that said staples could get banned, and this destroys the confidence the player base has on the RC, because now there's the precedent that any card could end up being banned from the format without prior warning that the cards are problematic, so why save money to buy expensive cardboard if we don't trust they will stay legal in the format? rhystic study is a expensive staple of the format, and it could easily be banned without any warning, same applies to cards like Smothering Tithe, cyclonic rift or The One Ring i spent the last year saving money everywhere i could to buy a mana crypt(in my country one copy cost's around the monthly minimal wage) for my mono red deck, the card is in the mail and i was unable to play a single game with the card because of that, and i know that there are a lot of players like myself that don't have a lot of money and because of that wouldn't have bought the card if they knew the card was on the watch list, or at least would have sold their card as soon as the Rules Committee were to put those cards on the watch list, because we don't treat cards as an investment, we buy cards to play the game. i apologize if i committed any grammatical error or if i sound like a cave man, English isn't my first language
In their last video, Jake and Joel are magic said they were informed of the banning a month ago (implying they were tipped off to get rid of their supply). 11:41 fun fact there's actually a typo with this reprint of Koma. It should be "at the beginning of EACH upkeep" instead of "at the beginning of YOUR upkeep."
I appreciate and enjoy this earlier release format. In all honesty prof's reviews rarely cause me to not buy something I was planning to buy but they do sometimes cause me to pick up something i wasn't planning to. And I also appreciate knowing ahead of time just how badly I'm wasting my money on Hatsune Miku cards. Somehow knowing I'm wasting my money going in feels less bad than guessing I'm wasting my money and then finding out I was right afterwards.
Yeah I prefer this earlier posting of Secret Lair. I think being able to review cards before they sell out is a lot better than other benefits you might get if you wait until release.
I was very happy to see this video as just last night at my LGS I stood and waited and watched someone else crack a secret lair just to see what was in it before deciding I didn't need one. 😅

Well I mean they haven't printed them yet cause they are purchase to demand... o wait. Ah well not like reading the card explains the card these days anyways.
Actually yeah, this really helped. I really like the art on some of these but realizing that the price probably won't be that much higher as singles, I'll probably wait
@@TolarianCommunityCollege I've signed up for emails multiple times and I've gotten not a single email telling me when a drop happens. I've even gone through my spam and nothing.
7:56 common misunderstanding on this card: the additional beginning phase happens "after this phase", so after the second main phase. This means you still untap all your lands, but you can only spend it on instant speed spells since your main phases will have passed by the time the additional beginning phase triggers. Still a sweet card in some decks!
@@FineOtter I made bank on that card when it released. It was selling for like 25$ because of teh misreading and then people realized is was fuckin shit.
19:00 Definitely should have reskinned Marvin and Arabella from Duskmourn for Chucky and Tiffany. Using demons instead just feels wrong, especially since they AREN'T demons in the movies, they're human spirits possessing dolls.
This. They put the wrong errata on Sphinx of the Second Sun (the errata that they walked back on thanks to the enormous backlash from players), and they also messed up Koma's text, both in the same lair drop.
@@BlueGriffin20 All the pre-Bloomburrow cards were walked back to each postcombat main (so multiple triggers per turn with additional combat effects), but they are going to be using "second main phase" (for once per turn) on new cards going forward. If you search o:"postcombat" on scryfall you'll get the 11 pre-Bloomburrow cards that were going to get changed, but the player backlash made them back off and not change the old cards.
@@LadyTsunade777 can you provide me a link from wizards clarifying those get to keep their original text? I still see nothing about those being walked back while Googling.
Feels weird to correct the Professor but Sphinx of the Second Sun gives you an additional beginning phase after your second main phase. It's worded weirdly but the trigger goes on at the beginning of your second main phase and gives you a beginning phase AFTER that phase.
What's crazy to me, is that the new Secret Lair Koma has a pretty noticeable mistake in its text. The Secret Lair Koma says that it creates the serpent tokens at the beginning of YOUR upkeeps while each other Koma says that it creates them at the beginning of EACH upkeep (both yours and your opponent's).

i agree that they burning the trust the community have on them is bad, since the only thing giving the RC legitimacy is the fact that the player base give them legitimacy, if they break our trust, WOTC could end up taking over the format, and i don't know how good that would be
@@markbrierley6367 Its an easy mistake to make, especially considering Elspeth is an outlier in terms of have a "full name" planeswalker card exist but not be the first introduction to that planeswalker as far as I'm aware. Not fact checking every single statement in a MTG video doesn't seem like the standard for lazy to me.
@kinlerj it is an easy a mistake to make. It's someone just saying it instead of the literal 20 second Scryfall check. They write these scripts and then there is a team that edits and then there is a team that shoots and then there is a team that edits the footage. Now there may be some personnel overlap and not all of the team members may be familiar with Magic. But TCC is, first and foremost, an information channel and so the 3 possibilities here are ignorance, laziness, or malice. None of those reflect well on a channel that is supposed to be giving you factual and actionable information.
Sooo... Slimer wasnt an Ooze-related secret lair? Re-skin various ooze cards with various slimer art would make so much sense?! Scavening Ooze, Consuming blob, Umori the collector, expanding ooze, gelatinus genesis, ooze token, and more!!! It just makes sense.
Very helpful. I really appreciate the early review. Products come at us so fast it's nice to be able to sit down, listen, and think before I have to make a decision to buy or not in the FOMO moment.
Even if the quality of the cards is lower, I do prefer seeing your thoughts on secret lairs ahead of time. If you feel you are able, I would prefer you continue using this format going forward.
I find it both hilarious and awesome that the number one Magic the gathering TH-cam channel has a “I’ll get to it when I’m ready” approach to topicality, and doesn’t feel the need to just blurt out a half baked opinion
I will watch every one of these, even though I’ve already made up my mind about Secret Lairs, just to see shorn-head Professor’s “New Secret Lair Alert!”
Very grateful for the earlier video, fantastic idea! The lesser quality preview images don't really bother me, especially considering that you put up a clearer image of the base card for clarification. I really like this new format, great job!
I don't see a problem with this method regarding Secret Lair, especially since having the product in-hand for a review is a gamble, at best. If nothing else, this is better than a review coming out AFTER the product is sold out.
I prefer this method. Now I can consider what secret lairs I want to buy and still buy none of them because the art doesn’t speak to me this time, but hey maybe it will next time.
Thanks, this saves me time on the 30th! So not worth it. Love that Blanc art though. PS Can't believe you liked the Real Ghostbusters so much Prof. It was mediocre at best. Each his own I guess ; )
I can practically guarantee the Miku bonus card will be another walker reskin for MEIKO. I am utterly baffled as to why they made KAITO a Jace, instead of... a Kaito? Like hello? They messed up this Sphinx of the Second Sun: it has the now reversed errata on it, the errata Wizards walked back on after huge backlash from players. (the backlash was mostly centered on Neheb, but it applied to all 11 cards that say "postcombat main phase") Also worth mentioning that this Koma printing is misprinted: it says "at the beginning of _your_ upkeep" instead of the actually correct "at the beginning of _each_ upkeep"
Ghost buster is: weird, I hope Ghostbusters fans accumulate in magic and make the "connection" maybe but, so far this franchise won't make a huge impact
Like this approach, I'm 100% more likely to actually notice and have a shot at getting the secret lair. +1 disappointment in those ghostbusters cards...
What I think would be really neat is if an update video followed a couple of weeks post-release showing how the prices shake out. Always enjoy these, thanks Prof!
Drown in dreams will not have its first foil printing here. It was reprinted in MH3 commander decks, and has a ripple foil version worth a whopping 90 cents...
I'd like to say i much prefer early product review videos, and image quality isn't really important to me. thanks so much prof for evaluating these drops before they're released!
Re: Careful Study from the Real Ghostbusters SLD. There was an episode in which Egon and Slimer exchanged "bodies". The art on the card is referencing Egon's "careful study" into finding a way to change back.
I don't play Magic but Im a fan of Ghostbusters and thought this could be a way to get me into the game. Sadly after hearing they're not that good, and the art being underwhelming IMO it's disappointing. Feels like they just wanted Ghostbusters in MTG or vise-versa and didn't care to think it out.
This video was very nice given how unorganized the release information was and I had no idea time sieve was getting a reprint for my blinged out tivit deck
Already plan to get the Chucky secret lair as a birthday gift for my friend, even if the reprint value is garbo. He doesn't play Magic at all, but he's a huge Child's Play fan (whereas I do not like it lol) that I'm sure would really like them as collector pieces. It'll be a neat way for us to bridge our two wildly differing interests.
You are typically the only way that I hear about Secret Lairs Prof, so I appreciate your consistency here! I'm still yet to buy one, but I know some day you'll post a video that convinces me to give it a shot :) - W
Honestly using food Tokens to Stun creatures would have been such a better idea for a Slimer Commander card. What a missed opportunity once again from SL cards and missed design fun.

Love seeing this before the sale since it saves me from having to figure out if the drop is worth the stress of setting alarms for the sale going live and trying to sneakily keep an eye on the queue during work zoom calls just to hope I can snag it before selling out! 3:51 Not sure if people have pointed it out, but Elspeth, Knight-Errant was the OG Elspeth card, printed in Shards of Alara, 2 years before Scars of Mirrodin, NOT Elspeth Tirel. Actually yeah, this really helped. I really like the art on some of these but realizing that the price probably won't be that much higher as singles, I'll probably wait
It's releasing 9am pacific time on the 30th, they said in an email but it is weird that it doesn't seem to be on the website anywhere
It's always the same time, no matter the date. So now that you know, it will always be that time.
LOL, I just triple checked and despite being signed up for said emails, I received no such email. Why don't they put this info on the website?
Most of the updates on secret lairs are posted to the secret lair twitter before anywhere else
@@TolarianCommunityCollege I've signed up for emails multiple times and I've gotten not a single email telling me when a drop happens. I've even gone through my spam and nothing.
It was also mentioned in at least one of the reveals.
Now I need to see Miku in a Ghost Busters outfit
7:56 common misunderstanding on this card: the additional beginning phase happens "after this phase", so after the second main phase. This means you still untap all your lands, but you can only spend it on instant speed spells since your main phases will have passed by the time the additional beginning phase triggers. Still a sweet card in some decks!
I feel like this is a legit contender for the most misplayed card text in MTG.
@@FineOtter I made bank on that card when it released. It was selling for like 25$ because of teh misreading and then people realized is was fuckin shit.
“Reading the card explains the card”
the amount of time i spend explaining this when playing cards like this is absurd high
there must be a better way to phrase this
@@walrider8073 the retrain card from MH3 explains it better. Something of the second sun.
Please keep doing this style of reviewing the lairs BEFORE release
And they're not sold out yet!
Slimer!? First thing that comes to mind is food tokes or unblockable or some card with ooze tokens? Pretty much anything else from what they chose
19:00 Definitely should have reskinned Marvin and Arabella from Duskmourn for Chucky and Tiffany. Using demons instead just feels wrong, especially since they AREN'T demons in the movies, they're human spirits possessing dolls.
Elspeth Tirel was the second Elspeth. definitely not OG. I was greatly disappointed going from Knight-Errant to Tirel.
I find it funny they did do the errata on Sphinx of the second sun, but messed up the text on Koma.
This. They put the wrong errata on Sphinx of the Second Sun (the errata that they walked back on thanks to the enormous backlash from players), and they also messed up Koma's text, both in the same lair drop.
@@LadyTsunade777 they walked those errata’s back? When? I still see “second main phase” listings on certain cards.
I’m surprised the Prof didn’t mention the misprint on Koma in the Monster Magazine drop.
He did mention the cards are unreadable.
Prof is the best, excited to hear your thoughts on friday.
Elspeth, knight Errant was the first?
Hi professor, I'm a long time fan of your channel, i usually don't comment on TH-cam videos, but since i felt personally impacted by this i thought i should say something, i would like to know if you could address the fact that before the September ban announcement the Rules Committee had the habit of informing the player base when certain cards could be banned in a near future(A.K.A. putting said cards on the watch list), previously cards like Tergrid, God of Fright and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines were placed on the watch list even though they weren't banned, and as far as i know they always informed the community when they decided to put a card on the watch list(even though some times they banned cards before the card could be put on the list, like Lutri, the Spellchaser), i don't have a problem with cards like Dockside Extortionist or Nadu, Winged Wisdom being banned from the format, because even though i don't agree with that decision, at least they informed the community that the cards were being watched closely and could be banned from the format, now, what i do have a problem with is the fact that mana crypt and jeweled lotus weren't put on the watch list(or if they were the RC simply didn't informed the community about it) before they were banned, even though according to the RC themselves they were talking with WOTC about banning these cards for more than a year, i don't think this is fair to the community, the reasons they gave to the ban of jeweled lotus were true since the card was printed, and mana crypt was a known factor for more than a decade at this point, if they spent this last year talking with WOTC about banning these cards, why not inform to everyone that the cards were in the watch list? this caused people(like myself) to spend a good amount of time saving money to acquire staples of the format without knowing that said staples could get banned, and this destroys the confidence the player base has on the RC, because now there's the precedent that any card could end up being banned from the format without prior warning that the cards are problematic, so why save money to buy expensive cardboard if we don't trust they will stay legal in the format? rhystic study is a expensive staple of the format, and it could easily be banned without any warning, same applies to cards like Smothering Tithe, cyclonic rift or The One Ring
i spent the last year saving money everywhere i could to buy a mana crypt(in my country one copy cost's around the monthly minimal wage) for my mono red deck, the card is in the mail and i was unable to play a single game with the card because of that, and i know that there are a lot of players like myself that don't have a lot of money and because of that wouldn't have bought the card if they knew the card was on the watch list, or at least would have sold their card as soon as the Rules Committee were to put those cards on the watch list, because we don't treat cards as an investment, we buy cards to play the game.
i apologize if i committed any grammatical error or if i sound like a cave man, English isn't my first language
if you think about it, that makes sense
although i liked the bans you are right about the precedent being made
I ain't reading all that.
I'm happy for u tho.
Or sorry that happened.
i agree that they burning the trust the community have on them is bad, since the only thing giving the RC legitimacy is the fact that the player base give them legitimacy, if they break our trust, WOTC could end up taking over the format, and i don't know how good that would be
shit situation :/
Actually Elspeth Tirel is the second PW, the first was Elspeth, Knight Errant /s
Indeed, from Shards of Alara.
Came down to say this. Hope it gets more notice. Lazy scripting and editing is lazy.
Collectability took a nosedive... good luck with your Secret Lairs WOTC
Prof always dressed to impress but I am absolutely loving the double-breasted shawl vest. Looking mighty sharp.
1:36 I wonder if the low resolution on previews is a deliberate attempt to make them harder to grab and counterfeit 🤔
"I play KAITO." "Is that a Kaito planeswalker?" "No, it's a Jace." "...what."
More cards to be banned or not who knows it's a gamble. Won't be spending a dime on magic, that's what they deserve.
I want to be excited for the Ghostbusters drop.. would have been nice to have the actual Busters feature more.
This is a better way of doing it, now people have an evaluation of the cards before the panic to buy sets in, now i will wait for singles to sell
I will watch every one of these, even though I’ve already made up my mind about Secret Lairs, just to see shorn-head Professor’s “New Secret Lair Alert!”
2 different Mikus but no Meiko? I'm not sad that I won't be able to get that drop now
Very grateful for the earlier video, fantastic idea! The lesser quality preview images don't really bother me, especially considering that you put up a clearer image of the base card for clarification. I really like this new format, great job!
The magic community does not deserve you. Thank you for being such a great human being and role model!
These secret lairs are just getting worse and worse in value, I swear...
‘For all you blood moon loving psychopaths out there-‘
I get the feeling there’s a story behind this 😂
My miku commander deck is only 2 secret lairs away....
So sad... I want Chucky 😢😢😢
Secret lair ruin magic and makes magic cheap.
You should make the product you're advertising bounce on the screen like those old Solitare games.
Disband the useless rules commity.
Thanks, this saves me time on the 30th! So not worth it. Love that Blanc art though. PS Can't believe you liked the Real Ghostbusters so much Prof. It was mediocre at best. Each his own I guess ; )
Trash secret lair. One of the worst yet.
this secret lair sucks, as per usual 😀
Thank you Prof. This is great for the consumer.
(the backlash was mostly centered on Neheb, but it applied to all 11 cards that say "postcombat main phase")
Also worth mentioning that this Koma printing is misprinted: it says "at the beginning of _your_ upkeep" instead of the actually correct "at the beginning of _each_ upkeep"
Koma is a misprint. Should be every upkeep but it says on your upkeep
That would make koma actually fair. But simic only plays with busted cards
My friend will only play with a commander deck that uses every Miku card that exists which is gonna be even build to make now
Im like your friend haha
Ghost buster is: weird, I hope Ghostbusters fans accumulate in magic and make the "connection" maybe but, so far this franchise won't make a huge impact
Like this approach, I'm 100% more likely to actually notice and have a shot at getting the secret lair.
+1 disappointment in those ghostbusters cards...
What I think would be really neat is if an update video followed a couple of weeks post-release showing how the prices shake out.
Always enjoy these, thanks Prof!
These planes walkers are so kawaii... even if they suck, why not have such a cute art?! ❤ Astral is fine... but nonetheless, buy singles!
I think their thought process behind the ghostbusters logo being boros charm begins and ends with it being white amd red... 🙄
I like the content but, you weren't far off, commander isn't what it was recently
ngl, with the title you gave me a heart attack thinking I missed the window for the fall Hatsune Miku lair without even ever having seen it but I appreciate getting this video a couple of days before the sale.
WOW, Prof finally got a clue, and is planning ahead. Lets see if he can log in and purchase within 3 hours of them going up this time!
Many magic the gathering players ask the question: Is it even possible to buy this cards and so, is secret lair even relevant anymore?
As always prof, thank you for your videos. Love seeing this before the sale since it saves me from having to figure out if the drop is worth the stress of setting alarms for the sale going live and trying to sneakily keep an eye on the queue during work zoom calls just to hope I can snag it before selling out! I always watched your SLD "Is it worth it to buy..." vids when you did post them to see if I made the right call but by then it was too late for me anyway. Missed opportunity in this drop for an eldrazi marshmallow man...

I love Peach Momoko's work in other card games, but it's hard to justify that price tag for cards that cheap...
3:51 Not sure if people have pointed it out, but Elspeth, Knight-Errant was the OG Elspeth card, printed in Shards of Alara, 2 years before Scars of Mirrodin, NOT Elspeth Tirel. Shards of Alara Block was followed by OG Zendikar, followed by Scars, followed by OG Innistrad... Yes, I am old, nearly 35 at this point, but hey, I remember things still, no dementia yet, haha. Also, I appreciate this format, btw. Good video!
September 30tg is the day these new secret lairs are dropping and I will be copping!
Thank you as always for the well put together and thought out content/information Professor! I personally appreciated getting the information on these secret lairs beforehand! Great thinking! ❤
Don't worry Prof, the Miku secret lair is not that bad. There has been an info that there will also be a Chandra Flamecaller, which adds a whopping ~0.33$ value(and ~0.75$ in foil)
That folk art set is just too cool for me to pass up. In my mind that’s what secret lairs should look like
I'm so tired of secret lairs. Not only because there are so many, but because after all these years, when there was finally a secret lair I really wanted, I found out about it the day after release and it was already sold out. I'm so over these business practices.
September 30th, Noon EST. This information is available for people with Google.
