I have evaluated the crash-sight. One thing is glaringly obvious: This accident was totally avoidable. Unless James was driving at an extremely high rate of speed and wrecklessly. Nobody really wants to admit it. They're more concerned about salvaging James Dean's reputation after his death. Which is kinda ridiculous.
That crash was attributed to Donald Turnupseed, the driver of the other car, who was never charged somehow. They estimated Dean's speed at the time of the crash to be 55 mph based on the wreckage and position of his body. This was in 2005 according to the CHP officer who responded to the scene.

I think the car turning left was in a line of cars, not alone. In a scene depicted both cars would have had more time to react and foresee the danger even when James was speeding. The turning car definately appeared from "nowhere" in reality inside the breaking or reaction zone just like when a deer is jumping in front of your car from "nowhere" and you cannot avoid the hit.
