What I think of the title, I've thought of an old Sharon, Lois & Bram's children song (Wow, I'm that old and I'm only 37 1/2)! Nevertheless, it's sounds like an overly pretentious experiential horror film made by amateurs that ain't worth your time and money! Pure boredom at it's finest! What's so scary about ceilings, walls, toys and other objects disappearing? Where's the plot in that? This makes "Paranormal Activity" films look like masterpieces! And enough with these annoying jump scares! Why doesn't filmmakers understand that it's not scary, just infuriating? This is reason why it's so hard to find recent horror films that has subtlety, better characters, a chilling concept and an original story!
I remember I saw someone on Twitter talk about how Skinamarink accurately portrayed the feeling of having a night terror. When I pressed the guy, he admitted that the only night terrors he's had in his life were maybe a couple when he was a kid, and the things he described about them felt like what I'd call a "bad dream". I'm plagued by nightmares and night terrors, and it's a serious, genuine problem that affects my ability to function. Some of them are so vivid and disturbing that the images flash back into my mind sometimes. I wasn't surprised, but I was really angry that someone tried to liken this mind-numbing, boring movie to a serious issue he didn't even go through. It felt trivializing to me, and pretentious film folks don't seem to get that saying things like "this is just like night terrors" or "this is just like dissociating" (a comment that particularly upset my partner) will actually matter to people who have to experience those things.
I usually like experimental horror movies but this sounds awful. Thoughts on The Incredibles (2004)? I think it’s great, my favorite animated film. Incredibles 2 (2018) was good but not as great as the first one
If you think is bad. You have to review the Outwaters. Lots of nonsense shots and in the end the guy cuts his junk off and guts himself. Not kidding. Dumbest movie I've ever seen. I think I can answer a bunch of these issues for you... Plot: Kids home alone, parents AWOL, evil entity takes over house and torments the kids. After that yes it's all up to how you interpret it - including not interpreting it but just sticking with the base plot! Stuff happens. Kid falls down stairs, Dad disappears, kids try to find Dad, door and windows disappear, entity starts making itself known and messing with the physics of the house, Kaylee goes upstairs to her parents room and encounters phantom (entity created) versions of her parents, Kaylee goes into the basement and is punishes by the Entity, Kevin goes looking for Kaylee and finds her but she's disfigured by the entity. *phew* and on and on.... Stuff does happen. I think the film is loved by people who are into analog horror. And by "into" I mean more than just a vague awareness, for example if you've watched Mandela Catalogue or Walten Files. Movie has characters. It literally has the two kids as main protagonistas. "Movie doesn't have any story arc or character development".... The kids are 4 and 6! What do you want, the "hero's story arc"? The focus is on the kids and them trying to live in this crazy dark version of reality. The blood splatter on loop scene, "why did they need to keep showing it", because the entity was tormenting poor Kevin and Kaylee by killing them and and then turning back time to bring them back; to kill them again! It's not a tricky scene to work out. Try another watch, on your own, at night, phone out of reach, if you still hate it then eh, it's just not for you! But give it a chance.
I am never watching this again. I gave it a chance. All of the things you said that are a plot? Are the bare minimum. If that is a narrative then I guess commercials have narratives and plots too. Guy goes to car dealership, looks at cars, finds a car he likes and drives it home for his wife with a big bow on top. The bare minimum of story telling makes it feel like nothing happens because there is zero emotional connection to any of it. So technically things do happen but they don't resonate strongly let alone are that memorable because there is no reason to care about any of it. It didn't creep me out. It didn't make me feel uncomfortable. So the mood and aesthetic wasn't enough to keep me interested. It has characters but no depth. Just because they are kids? That doesn't mean they can't have depth. I have seen films featuring kids around his age that had depth, personality something to draw you to them or care about what happens to them other than the fact that they are kids. The original Child's Play is a good example of this. Andy is quite young. But there are aspects of the script and from Vincent's own performance that make the character not only likable but interesting. There's a dynamic there that is missing completely with any of the kids. The same applies for the adults. They are like paper cut outs. No depth to speak of. And the film centering around kids, doesn't excuse it having next to no real narrative or characterization. Like I said earlier, plenty of films feature kids this young and they give you a clear reason to be invested in what's happening other than the mood or atmosphere. As for the the blood looping? I said I didn't remember because I didn't care. I have to care about what's happening on the screen or have some kind of investment in the plot or the characters to remember vividly what happens. If I could care less, I forget about it as soon as the film is over. I mention the scene not because I was confused as to why it was looping, but because it was one of the few scenes that I had any kind of recollection of admist so many sequences of blurry nonsense. And if Analog Horror is just shots of blank walls and other items in the dark with a heavy grain filter? That is absolutely not for me. And all of things you are saying the film represents to me are just as fuzzy as most of the shots in the film. Because the film is essentially a blank slate. The writing is lazy and so vague in terms of what is happening or what it's about it just leaves you to do all the work to make sense of it. Which is what leads to you putting things onto the film that aren't necessarily even there in the first place. Like the Dunning Krueger Effect. At it's core, Skinamarink isn't as deep as people make it out to be. It's a simulation of a nightmare featuring two kids. That's it. It's fascinating to me that people can get so much and find so many different interpretations of the themes and subtext of a film that has next to nothing tangible or concrete to create such thoughts.
@@OcpCommunications The first time I watched it it was late night, wife and kids gone to bed, lights off, I found myself quickly immersed in it. As a movie I really love the way it looks with the grain and scratch lines, that's just a personal preference, I love the grainy 70s grindhouse aesthetic, the move takes this takes this and amps it up. I love the colours, the grain, the light and dark. The sound as well, the lofi hum, it just hits for me. In a way its just a haunted house movie, so the plot and narrative doesn't (for me) need to be any more than what it is. I'm not putting anything in here that isn't there, the things I've described are physical and tangible. As to the environment that you need to be in to get the most of the film, this isn't anything new, it's always been best to dim the lights for a horror movie. I once watched The Shining in the middle of the day, sunny day, curtains open, browsing my phone a bit, and I was totally unphased by everything in the movie. Every scene was a non-event for me. So to say that you shouldn't need to set the scene around you to get the most out of it doesn't make sense to me. "Any person can shoot and edit this video".... That doesn't make it bad. The kids sounded very natural to me! I've got kids (10 and 12 now) and Kevin and Kaylee are behaving and talking how 4 and 6 year old that I know would have. You've said itself, "you hate this kind of film" and that comes across in your review! It's clearly just not for you and that's cool, but going on a rant about how you can't understand how anyone would have positive views on it sucks. I make analog horror videos myself. The big one I've done is "WKBW's War of the Worlds" if you care to look it up. 🙂👍 I can tell you that after Skinamarink I fell in love with the look and feel of it, it's changed me in terms of what I want my future content to look like and I will be using the aesthetic in my own content! So that's how it works for me, you asked in your video and hopefully this has answered. 👍
Thanks for the reply and to be honest I do admit I was a little too harsh on the why can anyone give this a positive review bit. Which is why I did try to walk it back a little say that if people like it that's fine. I just don't get why it's so massively praised. And I still don't. And I stand by what I said on that. It's ridiculous to me the sheer amount of defending and hype this film has gotten. It is near the point of parody it's gotten that out of hand. Even after all of the explanations people have given me. Beyond the aesthetics I don't see much of anything this film has to offer. As for the right environment for a film to be good or appreciated? I don't buy that. If the film is good it doesn't matter what time of the day or night I am watching it. Now with the wrong audience? That's an argument that I agree with. The wrong audience can affect things but the time of day or how you watch it? Not so much. Quality is quality to me. That being said, I wish you luck on your content and I really am glad you got something out of the film. It just isn't the kind of film for me at all.
@@Johnlindsey289 The Shining is awesome, I love it... But that's the point I was making, that I watched it in the daytime on a sunny day and it just impacts the level of immersion; even with Shining.
Some scenes were creepy the music score was also creepy . But movie sucks
This movie is an endurance test
This is basically the poop that took a pee in movie form and people trying to come up with different meanings behind it that don't exist
Experimental horror films = lots of static shots where nothing is going on and maybe some spooky bit at the end of a near 2hr run time
Oh yeah since when is Cannibal Holocaust a bad movie?
Never argued that it was a bad movie. And if I mentioned it instead of Cannibal Terror or Ferrox? That was my mistake.
@@OcpCommunications Ah I see. Matt bashes Cannibal Holocaust. I love when they put a knife through that rodent just kidding lol the music is great though they also kill a turtle and Matt doesn't like the movie
Lol Matt is not gonna like you praised David Lynch 🙂
David Lynch is one of the best directors of all time. Never made a bad film except maybe Dune
He really doesn't mind if I like Lynch more than he does.
Still not watched it and never will… absolute cheeks!!!
I'm surprised A24 had nothing to do with this shit
Even they knew, "Yeeeeeah, no thanks."
A24 movies have plots
Not enough potential for gratuitous sex scenes.
Notice Ocp is ignoring the plot that the child fell down the stairs and hurt his head how is that not a plot?
But does that plot lead to anything? No
@@aidanlastname0187 What do you want it to lead to?
@@theantinatalismzone392 Anything really, but it leads to nothing.
@@aidanlastname0187 Honestly I haven't seen all of Skinkamarink but I think the director's short movie Heck is very good. Honestly my life is just as weird as Skinkamarink and Heck and Ocp and Matt do admit there is an eerie atmosphere at times but of course they want their capitalist socialist how to serve the system and get a job and marry and reproduce brainwashing from the culture industry
@@theantinatalismzone392
Matt and Mike are REAL people with a passion for movies and true no BS honesty and they aren't pretentious as they have honest criticism in films even in rants and i think them with Oliver Harper and with others are youtube's best film critics
your cats tail looks like a snake.
This is a good example of the arrogance of Ocp and Matt. They will go after great movies like Vertigo Room 237 Sinister David Lynch movies Psycho A Serbian Film Terrifier 1 and 2 and ignore a movie like A Cure For Wellness these guys are the Internet version of Siskel and Ebert pure arrogance and delusion
How are they arrogant for not liking those films? Also don’t knock Siskel and Ebert like that
@@aidanlastname0187 Ebert had some brutal reviews of the Friday the 13th franchise and the way Ocp and Matt approach movies is very similar fx ignoring Damien Leone as a horror director. I'm upset
@@theantinatalismzone392 They gave Friday the 13th films bad reviews, because they’re all bad movies. What did you expect?
@@theantinatalismzone392 Damien Leone made Terrifier 1 & 2 which are bad films as well

Friday The 13th part 4 and 6 are classics and better than this bullshit
I can tell you that after Skinamarink I fell in love with the look and feel of it, it's changed me in terms of what I want my future content to look like and I will be using the aesthetic in my own content!
The shining is a real movie and better then this worthless piece of shit
@@Johnlindsey289 The Shining is awesome, I love it... But that's the point I was making, that I watched it in the daytime on a sunny day and it just impacts the level of immersion; even with Shining.
Agree to disagree, I love Skinamarink because of the look, the colours and the grainy appearance. Awesome!
One's toilet disappearing IS the stuff of nightmares! 😂🚻 Mike, if it's any consolation to you, the IMDb score for this movie is only 5.1, although I suspect your score might be a half a flush out of 10. 🚽
