In addition to water oxygen is required in order for steel to rust. The bottom of deep lakes are usually lower in oxygen and also cold so stuff gets preserved better. If that car had been sitting in a forest for a hundred years the body would probably be almost completely rusted away by now.

The gold was probably stolen and the car ditched the day it went missing. If the gold had been there he would not have reported finding the car if he wanted to keep the gold.
