Hey Bobby, i was in charge of husbandry at a small zoo here. Mata Mata turtles like it dark. Get some drift wood that enables it to crawl under in the water. I would also add some more water they have very long necks and will have no problems breathing. What ever falls from the trees such as leaves and twigs let them stay. The more cover the happier they are. They are pretty stationary in their settings. Small goldfish or shiners can be added so he can eat when ever he feels🎉 hungry. Nice looking turtle!
Rob my wife and I enjoy watching your channel here in Redding California. We get a good laugh from watching your youthful energy. We are in our early 60’s and wish we had some of your energy. There s something I need to say about your adventures into all the water ways where you catch fish. You are not tramping them in sewers, that would be deadly to your health. You are catching fish in the city STORM DRAIN systems that are built to take excess rain water back to the oceans. Unfortunately a lot of trash and debris ends up in these storm drains from people dumping their trash carelessly and rain water washing it into canals and finally the ocean. I appreciate you taking and interest in saving what you can of the environment and the aquatic life. Good work👍😎

In Brazil, the sale and possession of Mata-Mata turtles are illegal according to the Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9,605/1998), and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) also regulates the possession and trade of native species. I highly recommend you guys to research where this fish store sourced this turtle!!! The sale and trade of Mata-Mata turtles for abroad can be legal in some cases, as long as all applicable laws and regulations are followed, both in the country of origin and the destination country. To legally export a Mata-Mata turtle as a pet, the exporter must obtain a CITES export permit from the country of origin and ensure that all local laws related to the possession and trade of wildlife are respected. Hey Bobbie how are you today? Minnows, platies, mollies, guppies, goldfish, and sunfish can all go in the tank for food. Matamata Turtles are lone-wolf types. They don’t like to mix with other creatures, so they shouldn’t be handled often. You don’t find them moving around that much either, which means that they aren’t the most energetic viewing companion. Although they aren’t cuddly or zestful, they are very easy to care for. If you wanted a low-maintenance pet, the Matamata would be a great friend. Their unique appearance also means that your lethargic buddy will still be very interesting to watch. (So if you did eventually get a female matamata turtle and they breeded they would have the eggs around October-December)
These guys don't "bask", similar to snapping turtles they are almost basking all day underwater as well camouflaged as they are and move really slowly,....except the head in kill mode lol. Since they stay shallow unless swimming in fear, UV and heat reaches them quite easily even though they are an almost fully aquatic species.
The floating plants you had from a few vidoes back would be good for him to hide under! Just be careful as some of the floating plants grow crazy fast and will take over fast!
I wonder also, if Bobby would need to research the plants just to be sure they would not be toxic to the turtle since it does hail from the Amazon. One would think not, but best to err on the side of caution. But a great idea @kellywidmar62

Wow, just wow. I think I would have asked the age of the turtle. Lifespan is 15 years. Maybe longer in captivity. I would have asked, what else do they eat or like to eat. I'm sure you did all this though. It is definitely something to see for sure. Reminds me of the snapping turtles we've seen in your video's. A huge responsibility, you got this Bobby. Maybe a place for him to hide in or a cover of some sort. A turtle house.
Paul caffero has both of those turtles in his “turtle” pond.. they are cool, he actually has trouble with his eating live fish, says he eats at night only, he put guppies in there or just small fish for him to hunt and he won’t do it unless the lights are off.. lol and I know fly river turtles are pricey, last time I looked they were 14-1500
He is amazing but I beg you to buy some tongs and use them whenever you need to have your hands near him. Turtles can move like lightning especially when it comes to food and at this size your fingers are food ! I have to admit I have never seen anything like this !!!! We have big old snappers up here in Ontario Canada and I wouldn't put my hand anywhere near their head either ! To prove the point when I was little my Granddad let one bite the end of a shovel , walked around with it, put it back down at the edge of the pond and it never let go... then he told me to never go near the pond or in the water of the Beaver Pond because of the turtles ! Interesting animals though ♥🍁🍁🍁
Maybe get some more Water Hyacinth plants that you guys always see, when out catching fish? You know how important plants in your tanks and ponds are, for good water quality. Just a thought. You can add temporary fish ( food source ) as Juvenile Mayan ciclids and other unwanted invasive fish that could benefit your turtle! Tilapias are becoming annoying as hell lately, feed it to your turtle lol

I know predatory fins have fly river turtles for $500.00 before tax and shipping. And when I did my research after seeing paul cuffaros mata mata. I found that mata mata turtles rarely bite… so I’m confused
I dont know if you know who paul cuffaro is, or if you watch his videos, but he lives in jupiter florida, and he has both a fly river turtle, as well as a mahta mahta. He also has a giant 6500 gallon pond with a giant viewing panel. Really awesome to see you are getting a mahta mahta🎉🎉🎉 so very cool!

I love turtles, I had painters and snappers growing up and they are a lot of fun. You can put some marbles in the pond for him to play with. He will keep you busy feeding him.

Some monstera plants would be a great addition, or water lillies...they will provide good shade, prevent sun damage to his shell, give coverage for the baitfish, and just make the pond look nice😊😊

He might want a dry spot to relax, I saw you had one in the corner, but its still a bit wet there., you might want a screen across the top too, to keep the pests out, & things from falling in.
There are better prices out there for fly river turtles. I saw one online from a reputable place for I want to say 4-6” for $450, $2000 is up there. They can get fungal infections on their carapace so they can be harder to keep. Apparently that turtle gets along with others so may be you can find another specie he can live with.

He wouldn't mind more surface plants or a cave because mata-mata's like to hide. No fish is going to survive with him but some live bearers and feeder goldfish would bring some color.

You should set up a continues live feed of your Matamata turtle. It would be fun to see how many followers it would get. If you did that on your large predator pond, I think it would have a large following too. It would catch your feeding them without having to set it all up. Then you could go back and make feeding videos on the material filmed ..
Make sure you give him a large rock or something that will allow him to get out of the water if he wants to and stock the pond with a variety of fish. I personally would get a tank or small stock pond to keep live bearing fish in for him this would allow you to quarantine any fish you wild catch to make sure they dont give him any parasites and also allow you to get a start on them constantly reproductioning for a constant food source or him.

Kamp Kennan and Paul cuffaro both have large Mata Mata turtles and theirs are not aggressive and Paul's lives with fish and doesn't eat them.

He wouldn't mind more surface plants or a cave because mata-mata's like to hide. No fish is going to survive with him but some live bearers and feeder goldfish would bring some color.

You should set up a continues live feed of your Matamata turtle. It would be fun to see how many followers it would get. If you did that on your large predator pond, I think it would have a large following too. It would catch your feeding them without having to set it all up. Then you could go back and make feeding videos on the material filmed ..
Make sure you give him a large rock or something that will allow him to get out of the water if he wants to and stock the pond with a variety of fish. I personally would get a tank or small stock pond to keep live bearing fish in for him this would allow you to quarantine any fish you wild catch to make sure they dont give him any parasites and also allow you to get a start on them constantly reproductioning for a constant food source or him.

Mad name for a mad turtle, I'd suggest putting vines around the edge of the pool/pond that would look cool, he likes vines to hang under.
