As a 72 year old who was born shortly after WWII and somewhat of an interested person, I really enjoyed your video and was impressed by your research. Please continue including historical information when it is pertinent to your travels.

As a 72 year old, I appreciate your comment. Holly, the insight into the Solomon Islands in WWII was awesome. You presented it in a way that made me feel what was probably confusion, fear, and possibly amazement at what had just arrived. I recently watched a series called Reacher. As I thought about the Solomon Island people, a quote from one of the characters came to mind, "What just walked into Margrave?" I imagine the people of the Solomons had much the same reaction.

I sailed through the Solomons mid 70s. The war machinery left behind was sobering indeed. Sextant navigation back then ( stress)… I spent a year around Tulagi, Malaita, Honiara and the Santa Cruz islands. First time seeing leprosy, filariasis and so much malaria. It was really exciting as a young man (25?) living that way. Glad to leave there with only some minor illnesses. I am 71 now and recreating my memories through you. So few of us have done what you’re doing. Carry on. Love it.

Holly, Thank you so much. The history stories were nice, but I REALLY appreciate seeing that you took the time and made the effort to learn about these people and the hardships that their families had to endure. It is so nice to see someone caring about the people and places that they visit. Keep up the good work.

Imagine you're just some simple people living on the Solomon Islands and then all these incredible machines show up with strange looking men in weird clothes and start using weapons against other machines you have never even imagined existed before. Must have been terrifying.

Hello Holly, this is John. I find this video very interesting. I just so happen to be half Japanese and half Shawnee. I'm first generation Japanese American. My oldest sister was born in Japan and the rest of us were born in America. Michigan to be exact. My mother was in Japan at the end of WW2 and she told me stories about what Japan was like after the war. She would have been to young to remember the actual war. But anyways I'm quite familiar with what happened in the Solomon Islands. I think I've seen every movie that was made about WW2. Plus I've seen alot of documentaries. I like learning about history. But anyways I'm not to proud of the way that the Japanese treated people. Because I'm an American I understand what freedom is. In Japan they have the cast system. Basic cast information, the rich marry the rich, middle class marry the middle class and so on and so forth. You do what you are told unless you are upper class. Middle class can tell pore people what to do. You never questioned your authorities because they come from a higher class. This still goes on in Japan. But its not so bad now. But these people have been doing this for thousands of years. They are becoming more westernized by culture is very hard to change sense you've been doing this sense man has basically walked the earth. I felt sorry for the Solomons because they basically didn't even know what steel was let alone what you cold do with it. Then war showed up on their island. Talk about a cultural shock. Guns, bullets, grenades, rockets, tanks, ships and politics and war. They probably thought that the God's just showed up and they were angry. But I am glad that they went back to the way that they were. But its hard to forget what they learned. At one time they were rich people. Until other people's and cultures showed up and then they realized that they were behind. They lost their sense of being rich. That is having all that they needed. Now they know about wants! I just hope that they realize how rich and beautiful that they are. Cell phones and bank accounts don't make you rich. Having everything that you need makes you rich!❤ Oh yeah, I've been following you for about 3 years now and I just realized that you have freckles. They are cute. Just thought I would throw that out there. 😊

Great episode! Thank you for the historical perspective. People soon forget the sacrifices made. My father spent a year and a half in the Solomons as a Marine Aviator. First as the CO of VMF 215, a Corsair squadron. Then, promoted to Major, Assistant Air Operations Officer on Gen. Geiger’s staff. As such, he was responsible for every airfield in the islands, visiting every one on a regular basis. My name is Robert and I think he named me in honor of one of his lost pilots.

I right away realized this episode was “different”, but there’s always something that makes them all yours too! I loved it, & I would love MORE of it but not if it’s going to keep you inside at a desk for hours & hours…..I’ve always loved history, especially things that aren’t commonly known or accepted. I enjoy the research and usually do a lot before I go anywhere, so I don’t miss anything that I’ll regret after I’m gone. It’s also a way of keeping the History of these native people alive, while even adding to it. It’s most definitely a “Sign of Respect” for their History and their Culture, and I think it probably helps people deal with what’s “different” than what they’re used to seeing & doing in their own lives, work & homes. Thanks!!🍀

Holly, you are doing a great job. In the mid 80's while in the US Army Infantry in South Korea my platoon was patrolling in an area where our being there was a rare and surprising thing to the local Koreans. One afternoon a young girl and her very ancient grandfather approached my soldiers and wanted to talk to us. He had a small bag of apples that he wanted to give to the soldiers who had driven the North Korean army way from his village 30 years earlier. He had heard that we were in his village and with his grand daughter he had walked all day to meet us and give us a token of his gratitude. His reaction to what had transpired when he was young man while a major and foreign war overwhelmed them was very likely what the Solomon natives were thinking when war came to them.

Hi Holly! Thanks for doing so much to cover the history of Guadalcanal in World War II. My dad served on the island with the 5th Army Air Corp at Henderson Field. He had a cool story about a tentmate trying to make a vegetable garden and discovered the thing he had been pounding on with an entrenching tool was an unexploded shell. My dad heard him suddenly stop his digging and exclaim "The Lord is sure with me today!"

My grandfather was an american soldier in these battles and he was also the most gentle human I got to spend time with. After the war he went on to a lifetime of advocating congress for peace and restraint in military impulse. I friend of mine, Dave Simpkins, was on the USS Alhena and participated in the attack on Guadalcanal Solomon Islands in 1942. He operated an anti aircraft cannon on the ship and drove a Higgins assault boat. His ship was torpedoed but did not sink and was repaired in Australia. He told me a little bit about his time in the war. After the war he became a school teacher. He passed in 2005.

Yep, my father and 3 of my uncles fought in the Pacific WW-2, relative to this video my aunt's BF was an Army corpsman in the Solomon Islands. He snapped a photo of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt when she visited Guadalcanal (fighting was still going on) and you might enjoy reading her letters about that trip. Easy to find using Google. Also while you were in Vanuatu you sailed right past a PBY seaplane base an uncle was stationed at, I have some photos of him there; sailing a makeshift skiff he and his buddies rigged up.

My Dad who has recently passed away told me how he watched the air battles from his house when the battle of Britain was taking place. He also did National service (conscription) in Germany in 1948 and had very vivid memories of the terrible conditions that people were living in.

Its always exiciting to see your adventures while your anchored at different islands. I'm amazed at how fearlessly & confidently you sail along your voyages. Especially as a solo sailer! I'm definately not very knowledgeable about the war history. In my opinion your research was quite in depth & presented very efficiently. Your research on how the war affected the islanders of the Solomans was way more of a challege to find than that of the west. Yet you presented their history with respect. Overall, a broad context of the war history in the Soloman islands. Excellent presentation! Again, thank you Wind Hippie for sharing your amazing advetures🌺

Education is always important. It’s how we learn about the past, good or bad, to do more of or stop doing. I really appreciate the effort you put into this and to keep it as accurate as possible. Thank you so very much!
We love seeing your adventures and you doing what you do gives me hope that I, too, can handle my boat and go out and travel more. Lots of times I’m saying, if Holly can do it alone, I can definitely do this with my partner. Thank you for being an inspiration. Thank you for showing us all that a proper mindset will move mountains. May your travels be easy and joyful. Much love and big hugs to you.

An excellent insight into WW2 and its impacts on the islanders. Thank you. As an aside, the film The Thin Red Line by Terrence Malick (based on the 1962 novel by James Jones), covers the American landing at Guadacanal. You may or may not be into war movies, but it is one of the finest about the pacific war (or part thereof) and has some truly luminous moments (the assault up the grassy hillside to the Japanese bunker, the voice over 'This great evil, where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doing this? Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we might've known?'…and the sound track).

Wow you can’t imagine what that meant to me. My dad was I the Marines at Guadalcanal. He never talked about it. My mother told me he wasn’t in the first landing, but a subsequent one, “just a mop-up operation “. I learned subsequently, actually in a novel of all things. That it was a really big deal. (My mom could be the queen of de Nile). The pictures were really great. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Fantastic history lesson of the war in Solomons and a small window into the lives and perspectives of the native peoples who the war was thrust upon. I'm 69 years old now and my father, who is long gone now, named me after his big brother who lost his life in that conflict in the pacific at only 20 years old. such a waste. and it never ends. i enjoy your channel very much and i wish you the best in your journey Peace to you......

Thank you for your impartial matter of fact commentary on WWII Solomons Islands history from the local perspective. Please provide more local history as you travel along. BTW I love your positive can-do attitude. Your parents did good.

The Solomons were a super dangerous yet important turning point in the war. Following a victory at Midway Island, MacArthur turned to the Solomons and all hell broke loose which you covered very well. Thanks for the video it was excellent.

just checking, always a good video offering(sailing). Parents were both vets(canucks). Was very nice you covered about the Islanders, lots of forgotten heroes out there(women& children). IMO maybe others, regardless. "War is Hell" appears always not much is learned. Always glad to see people like yourself making choices to travels the beautiful earth. Good health& happiness to you always.🌺🍀
