The funny things is, I am a Model Railroader, that looks to the Terrain and Wargamer folks for ideas and inspiration. I do agree, these are some great molds, and a pretty easy process for rock making.
As a wargamer I get a lot of inspirations from the model railway people and there beautiful layouts. What makes the layouts pop and look real is in the fine detail. If your model is of a real location what is the strata and erosion of the rocks. This system will make it very easy to capture suitable small versions when you find them.
Thanks for sharing. I checked out the website, you are right it is a little 1994ish. It is a small world this guy you met in Massachusetts lives about 45 minutes from me in the foothills/Gold Country of Northern California.
Yeah, not sure what happened there? I'm starting to check the endings of my videos now when I edit. I've never seen that happen before, so I don't know what to look for yet. ;)
Now I understand. I slid the outtake off while I was editing, and forgot to move it up back to the video. *sigh* That's what I get for trying to get 'cute'. :)
Damn you Mike, I'd scheduled this to last 45 minutes! Damn deadspace, you can't type a damn thing wrong without a computer telling you that you can't spell but they'll happily let you render 20 minutes of audioless black without even a mention! Cracking as always mate!
Funny thing is the mistake at the very end of the black he forgot to delete. "3, 2, 1, So this is a pretty big mold so I'm actually going to step in front of the canyer,.. Canyer? Camera... 3, 2, 1, ...." End video.
I actually make my casting and while it’s removed from the mold I apply it where I plan to use it. I’d rather not use a heat gun and possibly crack Detail.
Nice video. I was already imagining what you were planning to talk about for 45 minutes, but apparently some technical mistake. :D No worries though. ;)
Howdy Mike. Just curious which molds you have picked up and recommend? I also really like the large one you have. Which is that? I don't see a pic of anything on the Braggdon site that match it. Thanks for all you do.
Gehti Nixan No worries. I left the mold number on the other video. This mold is #135. You can 'see' it here: bragdonent.com/smpic/cattable.htm When I looked I saw that there is no picture... I wouldn't have bought it sight unseen, and then I remembered I bought this at the railroad show in person. :) If you have more questions, keep them coming. I'll do my best.
***** Hey Mike you are the best! Thank you very much for taking time to help me! I have only one more question: Do you think that it's possible to create a rock area, which would be approx. 5 ft x 4 ft (from several individually patched together molds) all just from one mold without repetitivness? And i mean mold #85, the one you looked up for me in the other video comment section? (It's 10x13 inches)...Or would it most likely start to look repetetive if one goes for such a large area?
Gehti Nixan I think it is possible. In order to keep the tiling -ook to a minimum however, you will need to work with the casts a fair bit. Since this mold has such a strict faulting, you can't just rotate the mold to get a new look. By flexing the casts you can create novel angles, and you can cut apart sections and stitch them back together in new ways that will break up the repetition. Basically, the answer is yes, but the success will depend on how much time you put into it. :) When you look at my ocean cliff casts, you will see that even using the same mold, I was able to create some different looks but cutting and bending.
wow oh wow i have now so many ideas i might even go out to the park next week with a bottle of latex lol. it is getting very dangerous watching your videos now lol as i tend to end up buying new stuff, i had a look at the website there is so much stuff on there that i would like to get at some point down the line, i have always wondered what latex would be like to make molds but i thought it would just tare. i think i might have to order some different types and do a video on them.
i will be doing lots of videos i currently have 300 mins that i have to edit so i can upload them in 8 to 10 min segments. i have also come up with a very easy way that you can lock the boards together but still still change the layout to any way you want,
I don't have a step-by-step video, but there are instructions on the Bragdon website as well. It's under his 'geodesic rock' section I think. As for hydrocal, you can cast with anything you like. :) If you are using plaster, it will push down on the latex enough to flatten some areas. You will need to support the mold in a bed of sand to help it keep it's shape. Of course there are smaller molds as well. ;) And don't forget that you don't have to fill the entire mold, or fill it completely full. I wouldn't do a large cast with Hydrocal. It's just not hard enough. I would use ultra-cal 30 or another gypsum plaster for really big pieces. But do some small casts and see what you think. I expect you will be happy with the results. I would also visit the Hirst Arts site for tips on casting with plasters. See his tip on his 'wet water method'. Getting bubbles out of the cast will really make a difference in the overall look. Good luck. :)
3,2,1 I'll let this gowit 3,2,1 I'll let this go without harking on the video problems ;) Interesting product but I do like the method used. It makes sense.
At the moment I am using Foam-It 5 from Smooth-On. I think it's a very good choice but you could probably get away with foam-it 3 as well. I don't think a more dense foam is required. :)
RuneChaosMarine I take that as a compliment. :) There were many weekend mornings when I was young where I would just hang out on the couch and watch him paint 'happy trees'.
wellll dont know what hapend to rest blackness still me i ues agen durhams rock hard water putty dose not shenk or get hot and i add pigment to it just littel black come out gray and saves on paiting welll say helo to big kahona fore me :::))
ps the putty not tricky stuff butt depens on how mutch water me i add white glue to it how mutch ???? dont knowup to you butt then laers on say walls dry quwickly walls on house in lages baches it might tack over night and see water on top as drys / caers stil graet stuff now trreet the CAT

There is much to learn from both sides. Glad you found the video helpful.

Definitely. I've watched a lot of rail road videos in the past several years. ;)
Thanks for sharing. I checked out the website, you are right it is a little 1994ish. It is a small world this guy you met in Massachusetts lives about 45 minutes from me in the foothills/Gold Country of Northern California.
Nice time placement for the website. :) 45min... You should see if you can drive down and survey the molds in person.
That was very interesting;) I did like that new 20min darkness and some video clips;)
Nice video very helpful.

This might be the best product you have reviewed .
I'm glad you found it helpful. :)
Interesting new technique in video casting.... Nice Vegas tan, got that without leaving the basement :)
Well, I have spent a little time in the yard, but color editing for the video doesn't hurt. ;)

I forgot to slide up the outtake. Didn't realize that until just a minute ago. Explains a lot. :)
Freelyx
It is that outtake that created the dead space in the video. I forgot to move it up in the timeline when editing. It's always something... :)
You know, TH-cam has en editor. It's not good for much, but it's great for lopping off extra bits of video (I've done this before too).
Oh wow! I just clipped out the blank section. Thanks!
Wow really good.
I actually make my casting and while it’s removed from the mold I apply it where I plan to use it. I’d rather not use a heat gun and possibly crack Detail.
LOL right at the end ;) Nice to see a small outtake :P
I wish I had joined it to the video properly. That was the cause of the dead space. :) Glad you still enjoyed it.
Nice video. I was already imagining what you were planning to talk about for 45 minutes, but apparently some technical mistake. :D No worries though. ;)
Forgot to move up the outtake at the end. :( Ahh... the little details. ;)
24:43 I saw bats! I swear!
**chuckle** You and Hunter S. Thompson.
They were real...

I checked my email before this comment. :) If my email didn't explain anything in enough detail, just let me know.

Hi Mike, could you make your answer public? Please :)

That was my exact reaction. Dropped $85 right on the spot. ;) If you do some vids, I think it would be great to see other approaches and impressions.

do u have a video of making this Rock??. Can I use Hydrocal ??even though I will need about 5 gallons for this Rock !!!!

16:15 blackout. Watched it all hoping for a secret track, saddened.
Outtake at the last 40 sec or so. It was the cause of the black out. I forgot to move it up in the timeline while editing. :)

Interesting product but I do like the method used. It makes sense.
I really just can't say enough about it. It really has been revolutionary for me. :)
When you say you used expanding foam for the final layer when filling the mold, what kind/brand did you specifically use?
At the moment I am using Foam-It 5 from Smooth-On. I think it's a very good choice but you could probably get away with foam-it 3 as well. I don't think a more dense foam is required. :)
theres a good 20 minutes of black screen at the end btw
Yeah. An editing mistake. :)
"canyer???"
lol
Oh dear. Is there a typo somewhere? :)
Oh... the outtake/end clip... :) That explains a lot. Now I know why there is the dead space...
i feel, that you remind me of Bob Ross.
