Thank you for adding this video! It seems very challenging to find videos/photos of SP in Houston. I've yet to find any videos of the Hardy shops even though they were one of the largest shops in the south.

my Father worked at this yard for several years mid 50's through early 80's. As a Switchman and later as a Switch Tower Retarder Operator. He used to take me to the yard many many times. i remember when we walked the tunnel that runs under the yard. Luved to watch the engines pushing the cars over 'The Hump'. Thanks for the video.

Same here, my father just retired this past year... I remember it used to be Southern Pacific then later on changed to Union Pacific.

I worked that summer in Houston. It was the hottest summer on record! Much has changed since 1980! I was there the day that they removed the old tower 87 building! I used my boom truck to remove the old lock box before the bull dozer moved in!

In 1978 & 1979 I was a SP brakeman (Lafayette Div.) and switchman (Englewood, Chaney, Depot). It was pretty neat job for a 19 year old. Thanks for sharing!
P.S. In August of 1980 we were a little nervous because a monster hurricane (Allen) was churning in the western Gulf.

Thank you for uploading this video. I am a retired SP conductor that worked between Englewood and Strang for 25 years. This does bring back memories, some good others not so good. Sure wish you would have listed the engines and what type they were!

Did you ever run down the 146 line to Seabrook and beyond?? Seems I cant find any pictures of a single train down the now long gone line.

Interesting. As a newbie brakeman on the Houston & Texas Central, some dispute with the union and SP landed on me, another newbie and an old head conductor and engineer as we worked 3 months at the yard. This was circa 1967. Not sure if it was there when this was compiled, but the old creosote plant was in constant operation.

Nice one, sir. I remember Tower 87. Used to park just west of it to train-watch.

Where in Baytown is that shot? There's an abandoned UP line in Baytown that I cannot get any information or pictures of anywhere. The line is still there but cut into pieces.

The first Baytown picture was shot at the W Texas Ave crossing of the SP main, looking NE. The SP depot shown is long gone.
The MP shots appear taken about a block and a half SE of there, behind the 100 block of S Main Street. The MP tracks came up from the south - there was a switch on the west side of the S Main Street crossing. They curved up through what's now Quality Pallet and ran NE, paralleling S 1st St on the west side. The ended in a small yard beginning at Republic Ave and terminating at the depot. The depot is still there, just north of E Pearce St

    Two questions.
    1. Do they offer a tour around the yard?
    2. Is entrance to the yard free or at payment?

Great photos and narration. For the record, it's Englewood with an E, not an I.
