  • Throughout the latter part of his life, Frank Oscar Larson (1896-1964) would leave his Flushing, Queens home early in the morning with his Rolleiflex camera and embark on photographic expeditions to exotic places in New York City like the Bowery, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen or Times Square, or to less exotic places like Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and the Cloisters. This exhibit, compiled from negatives recently discovered in an old cardboard box 45 years after Frank's death, shows his unique and moving portrait of New York City in the 1950's. The Larson family presents this exhibit as a tribute to all the effort and love Frank put into his work, and the obvious devotion he felt to his hometown of New York.
Frank's grandson, Soren Larson, gives a background on his grandfather and his photographic work currently on exhibit at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Los Angeles.

Appreciate this project and seeing a past time and the grit of old NewYork. Nice to see your grandfather's interpretation of the city through his eye.

Great stuff. My dad had always told me that the 50s and 60s was a great era for film photography world wide. It was that post war boom time period here in N America an exjuberance captured on film, and im glad to see Mr Larsens work come to light just like Vivan Miers work a few years ago.

Nice work -- excellent views and perspectives -- he had a photographers Eye (I am a years ago working commercial & portrait photographer) - but did you have a problem scanning his photos - WHY are they all so "soft focus" or generally slightly out of focus ?? It does his work as portrayed here an injustice !! For my various work, I used a 4x5 Speed Graphic, 35 MM and 120 twin lens cameras back in the 1960's-70's

Would have been more enjoyable video without the permanently anchored business card at bottom right.

Good work for sure and better than the overrated mediocre Weegee (who seemed to have a bloodlust) and the untalented Robert Frank whose images are bogus.

Untalented Robert Frank I certainly would not go that far. But the wegee guy not all his work I enjoyed but still both are talented artist. And this guy was amazing also
