India is currently suffering a mental health crisis. With only 43 government-run mental hospitals serving a population of 1.2 billion, resources are spread thin. What's more, mental illness is highly stigmatized in India, especially among women, who are typically committed to mental health facilities with no legal rights, receiving involuntary treatment, and sometimes without a proper diagnosis.
VICE News travels to Maharashtra to investigate what it’s like to be deemed a woman with mental illness in India today.

With all the India bashing, people forgot to bring up a major point. People with psychological ailments are stigmatised and the families are stigmatised. Indian psychiatry is literally 50 years behind the western standards.
That’s because most Indians are telling their kids to go for either engineering, medical or commerce.
Nobody has any passion or the willingness to study psychiatry.
It is not fair or accurate to label this video as “India bashing”. This is the problem currently in our country- which is that the slightest criticism, even if it is totally fair and supported by evidence, will be automatically taken as a MAJOR point of offense. This is NOT “India bashing”.
India bashing is when someone unfairly criticizes India for something it does not deserve to be criticized for or for something that is simply not true. Neither of which apply in this scenario. I humbly request you to please stop using such phrases in a manner that is so incredibly frivolous.
Attitudes like that are what is poisoning India and convinces particularly younger Indians than when it comes to issues like this, the problem is western treatment towards India, not India’s treatment towards itself……..and this is the entire issue…..

Don't make up your mind for the whole country by looking at this one minute story. We are 1.25 billion and that's a huge number, not just the number but we are extremely diverse from north to south and from east to west, highly intellectual to uneducated and billionaires to those who die of hunger, from -67 degrees Fahrenheit in the glaciers of Kashmir to 122 degrees Fahrenheit in desert of Thar. Our religious demography is diverse as well. I am a citizen of India and this story that vice is showing is not a common trend here. In India we have a lot of mental hospitals but most of them are privately owned. BTW vice is quoting the population at 1.7 billion, lol that's wrong.

Pakistan especially their Islamists see Hindu India as the worst form of heretics. Unless other countries are willing to shoulder the burden of India's defence. The problem isn't money. The problem is low collection of taxes, misallocation of funds, corruption and the culture itself. So even if India reduces defence budget to Zero, you have to get rid of the structural problems. you would think this is common sense, but I guess Vice attracts trolls and idiots.

I didn't know zilch about mental health till only a couple of years ago when I started studying it deeply. The patient can't be made out.
Unfortunately even in urban India the therapists and psychiatrists are horrible for me. It never worked but what made me feel better was meditating
if you ever sat through a 20 minute song segment of a five hour bollywood movie knowing another song is coming in a few minutes....yeah you would check yourself into a mental hospital.

They do. But the patients are treated slightly better and they don't leave their women or parents to rot. In fact they don't accept a person with no mental illness but in this place there are people false accused of mental disorders and forcefully dumped here. In foreign it would be an immediate case and the person trying to force a non sick person in a mental ward would be arrested. In India, as u can see, no one cares. India only spends 3% of it's finance for mental health, even lesser than Bangladesh and Pakistan. Now u know what we are talking about
