I don't know how it is with a square rig, but my 55' herreshoff schooner would roll horribly downwind if I shortened sail....we called it a 4kt waddle and quickly learned that driving as hard as possible downwind made for a much better motion. If we had the wind for it...8kts made for a very nice ride. -Veteran '66-68....'ex-Valkyrie'
