A very well-written honorary of a humanitarian who lived his own horrific time in the Khmer Rouge camps. I had the honor of hearing him speak circa 1985 at a small Psychology convention. He told of his story during those struggles of survival in the camp. I remember he said, he and his wife would sneak out at night, taking turns depending on who had more energy, to hunt for insects or other food sources just because they were starving. He spoke of how his wife died in his arms, and he could not use his medical skills to help her because he had to hide the fact that he was educated and an MD. Hearing his story, made my skin crawl; I could not believe the atrocities he lived through. After his presentation, I got to talk to him personally.
Before meeting him that fortuitous day, I had never heard of the genocide under Pol Pot's regime. Because of him and upon researching more, someday, I hope to go on a Christian medical mission to Cambodia. To this day, though not as often, people are still being killed or severely maimed by landmines. I want to go and help them with prosthetics and wheelchairs (I'm an Occupational Therapist) and bring the Word of God to those who wish to learn.
R.I.P. in God's arms, Dr. Haing S. Ngor

I had the great honor and privilege of meeting this extraordinary man. He was so kind and humble. I just finished his amazing memoirs. What he endured and still faced life with hope and optimism has made him my hero. God bless you, Haing, and I know you are in heaven with your beloved wife.

What a tragedy. A man who had survived the killing fields of his own country, only to be murdered in what should have been a safe place for him, the United States. But his Oscar winning role as Dith Pran, sadly also dead, means he will not be forgotten.

@@solidstudd22 Correct they shot him because he didn't give them the locket that contained a picture of his deceased wife. He did give them his gold rolex first. I guessed he loved his wife so much; so he refused to give them that locket then they shot him. That was so cruel of the gang members.

Read the book by him, it's very good but extremely sad (Survival in the Killing Fields). No need to put apostrophes, even if the US government Tortured and Shot one in every four children born it would still be free in comparison to the regime he came from.

Calm down. Of course Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge are responsible for what is arguably the most egregious political movement in modern history.
However, Nixon and Kissinger are responsible for the inexcusable carpet bombing of Cambodia which was a war crime in itself. The bombing was so destructive that it served as a propaganda tool for displaced villagers to join the Khmer Rouge.
