- Train Vs Tram | Which is the fastest to Manchester Piccadilly? (24/08/22). Myself and Jen raced from Vic to Picc, as Jen took the tram and I took the train. Loser buys. Winner wears my knickers. Team G Vs Team Jen! Who will win?!

I am speechless on the result on the race.... But it was a tough one as I'm on Team G and on Team Jen! Team Gen??? Congrats on the winner as I don't want to spoil the video but a epic video indeed.

Who'd have thought a train journey that literally starts off going almost half a mile in completely the wrong direction, then joins the second worst bottleneck in the UK rail system and ends with several hundred yards of walking would take longer than a direct cross city tram ride to well a located well located stop? Ken was always gonna win.
Wow. That is a shock. Does mean our constant journeys on these is a good idea

Really loved this race and the descriptions on what’s going on. It reminds me of the old school top gear races back in the day.
A few minutes at Victoria, 9 minutes on the train, then the walk from Platform 13 (another few mins)...
...it only takes about 15-20 minutes to walk between the two. I walk it :)

The Ordsall curve is woefully underutilised due to capacity constraints along the Oxford Road Corridor which were known about and ignored by the Government when the link was being built.
Next race: Rotherham Central to some coffee shop in Meadowhall shopping centre, (A) by train to Meadowhall station and walk across the bridge and (B) tram-train to Meadowhall South tram stop and walk through the car park? There's a xx58 train and a xx02 tram most hours.
Great fun. I walked from Vic to Picc this afternoon, but I didn't know about this video, so I didn't time it. Exchange Square tram stop was full of Real Sociedad fans on the way to Old Trafford to beat Man United. Happy days.

Train loops round the city rather than tram can just go right through, dwell times per stop will probably be smaller too.

I felt so conflicted about who I wanted to win! Ultimately I had to go by mode of transport so obviously I ended up rooting for the train. Still pleased for Jen winning though!

Another great vlog. Yesterday I caught the tram from Piccadilly to Media City. I could've walked/cycled it quicker. It was painfully slow. I love platforms 13 & 14, organised chaos 🤣

Lol you pulled Jen out from getting her coffee. 😂 Brilliant collaboration between you and Jen. A tram is faster than a train? How is that possible? Guess HS2 needs trams to run on it now lol. Also I did visit Manchester twice last year and on one trip I did see the Odsall Chord and saw some Northern Filthy Buggers (trains I've loved since I was living in Brighton but I've said that plenty of times lol) working on there so it may be possible Northern do run on it but I haven't checked lately.

I used to live there, while the Train has the speed and stop advantage, it has to take a long route around, where as the Tram cuts through the city. Also the platform the Train comes in on is quite far from the station entrance by a considerable amount whereas the Tram, despite coming in underground comes out in the middle of the station and is a much shorter route. Frankly, the train was always going to lose between those two stations, just simply because of the platform configuration.
I always walk it to Piccadilly from crumpsall Manchester even in a blizzard 😍

I live on moss bank opposite station road near crumpsall station these days it's mostly teams that go past my house 😍 sometimes a maintenance train goes past

Here in Prague trams are faster than the metro. Even if the trains go faster you lose time getting down to the platform and back up.

I would not of thought the tram would of won as the train seemed quicker the tram was properly close to the finish point as you had to come from the train platform to the finish point.

I wonder whether it could have been quicker to have caught one of the airport/East Didsbury trams to St Peter's Square and get a tram to Piccadilly from there as opposed to waiting for the Piccadilly tram at Victoria?

What! I'm from Huddersfield and love 185's! Purpose built for the transpennine route, far better than the class 802's etc which are under-powered in diesel mode.

You could do Lime Street to Chester. One via Merseyrail, the other via TFW. Or maybe Helsby, the previous stop, so the Merseyrail user has to change at Ellesmere Port.

That result did surprise me. I didn't know that you could get a train from Victoria to Piccadilly. It is about 15 years since I commuted through Manchester; is the direct train a new thing? I knew yo could get the tram, but the train is a new one on me.

Shows you the insanity of modern transport planning. TPE trains from the east used to go straight into Piccadilly, now they spend forever circling the west of the city, and it would probably be quicker to walk from Victoria than even taking the tram!!

The thing about taking a train between the two stations is that you have to time it because they’re half hourly

@@GLovesTrains I thought that it was 2 services that are hourly. The Manchester airport Middlesborough, and the Manchester airport to Newcastle. They combine to make a half hourly service. Am I wrong with this?
Race to Canada, one goes out of Manchester Airport and another goes out of Luton Luton Airport

personally, I'm not too surprised that the tram beat the train here... I suspect the tram has better acceleration than the class 185s do, and between that and the walk from platform to exit at Piccadilly, that might have been enough to make the difference
