      I did LW for 20 years, and in the last 8 years, a lot of young people came in and they don't wear respirators or airstreams because they think it's soo cool to come out of the mine with coal covered black faces. And shift supervisors give them praise for sucking coal dust. It's crazy, that shift supervisor is not going to help you with your oxygen bottle 20 years down the road. But the damage is done, the young guys don't listen to the older experienced miners.

    The part that bothers me with long wall mining, is the subsidence. When you rip out all those pillars, expect subsidence. Look at what happened along Rt 70, roadway dropped like 5 feet!

    • @ericlotze7724
      @ericlotze7724 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But you see the government (and therefore taxpayer/debt ammount) pays for that, not the coal company, so no issues there !

    • @MrStaybrown

      Subsidence through hundreds of feet to the surface, aquifers disturbed and contaminated forever.

    • @madaxe79
      @madaxe79 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Meh… I’ve seen heavy subsidence, but at the end of the day, nature recovers… forget about coal fired power plants, thats just a catch phrase… if you want to imagine a world without coal, imagine a world without steel… because Coking coal is absolutely critical for steelmaking. So you can cry about coal fired power plants all you want, but you can even type that without coking coal…

    Joy went out of business last year (2016)...they made mining machinery...end of coal mining is near. We have 90 trains a day on the Conrail/NF Southern tracks and its a rare sight indeed to see one loaded with coal. Mountain-top removal gets coal for 1/2 the cost of deep mining...that's why its done.

      @@allan1048 I am not an expert, so disclaimer for that, but i would bet this may be in part due to having to "race to the bottom"
      (ie new markets in china/india/africa as they industrialize more, but may not have the standards of countries like the USA/EU)
