Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

I can just see it now .....
☆John Lewis walks through the Pearly Gates & the Angels see John Lewis enter into Heaven. They rush to meet him forming a crowd around him to welcome him. God looks up to see what's happening & spots the Congressman & calls to him.☆
*God:* "John! Come sit on my Right Hand side where you belong!"
*John Lewis:* "Lord I will come to you, as soon as I can get through this crowd!"
*Archangel Gabriel:* "Don't worry John we got this."
☆The Archangels Gabriel & Michael pick him up. & pass him over to the crowd of Angels who crowd surf him to over to. Gods Right Hand side where he belongs.☆
      Here endeth the lesson.

The real question is what can we do to reduce gun violence? The answer is mental health checks and background checks... His answer of gun bans can't work here in the US. Why you may ask? There are over 300 million guns in the US more than any other country. The next two countries Switzerland and Finland have the second and third most guns, and they have some of the least crime in the world. They don't do gun bans, but health/mental/background checks.

Sadly, Sushant, Canada has some big horrible issues, too, but they're just MUCH smaller, about 1/10 of the USA population and less than the state of California, yet the actual acreage is close to equal. They have a lot of the world fooled; they have big racism (absurd that thousands of Confederate flags fly in rural Ontario, for instance) and environmental horrors ongoing, but it's spread out far more making it not nearly as confrontational. Global awareness is more important now because our global population has doubled in 50 years. Canada has never had anyone of the stature of John Lewis. John Lewis, the civil rights leader and congressman who died on July 17, wrote this essay shortly before his death: Opinion | John Lewis: Together, You Can Redeem the Soul of Our Nation
While my time here has now come to an end, I want you to know that in the last days and hours of my life you inspired me. You filled me with hope about the next chapter of the great American story when you used your power to make a difference in our society. Millions of people motivated simply by human compassion laid down the burdens of division. Around the country and the world you set aside race, class, age, language and nationality to demand respect for human dignity.
That is why I had to visit Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, though I was admitted to the hospital the following day. I just had to see and feel it for myself that, after many years of silent witness, the truth is still marching on.
Emmett Till was my George Floyd. He was my Rayshard Brooks, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. He was 14 when he was killed, and I was only 15 years old at the time. I will never ever forget the moment when it became so clear that he could easily have been me. In those days, fear constrained us like an imaginary prison, and troubling thoughts of potential brutality committed for no understandable reason were the bars.
Though I was surrounded by two loving parents, plenty of brothers, sisters and cousins, their love could not protect me from the unholy oppression waiting just outside that family circle. Unchecked, unrestrained violence and government-sanctioned terror had the power to turn a simple stroll to the store for some Skittles or an innocent morning jog down a lonesome country road into a nightmare. If we are to survive as one unified nation, we must discover what so readily takes root in our hearts that could rob Mother Emanuel Church in South Carolina of her brightest and best, shoot unwitting concertgoers in Las Vegas and choke to death the hopes and dreams of a gifted violinist like Elijah McClain.
Like so many young people today, I was searching for a way out, or some might say a way in, and then I heard the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on an old radio. He was talking about the philosophy and discipline of nonviolence. He said we are all complicit when we tolerate injustice. He said it is not enough to say it will get better by and by. He said each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, speak up and speak out. When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.
Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. Voting and participating in the democratic process are key. The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed. You can lose it.
You must also study and learn the lessons of history because humanity has been involved in this soul-wrenching, existential struggle for a very long time. People on every continent have stood in your shoes, through decades and centuries before you. The truth does not change, and that is why the answers worked out long ago can help you find solutions to the challenges of our time. Continue to build union between movements stretching across the globe because we must put away our willingness to profit from the exploitation of others.
Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.
When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war. So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.
John Lewis, the civil rights leader and congressman who died on July 17, wrote this essay shortly before his death.

James, if you're seriously interested in this remarkable man, I HIGHLY suggest you read his book "Walking With The Wind." It's one thing to learn of the civil rights struggle, it's another to read it from the first person. He LIVED the history. I heard him speak years ago and he utterly blew me away. I raced out to get his book and it truly is incredible.

I totally see John Lewis crowd surfing his way into Heaven.
*Archangel Gabriel:* "Don't worry Congressman Lewis we got this."
☆The Archangels Gabriel & Michael pick up Joh Lewis. & pass him over to the crowd of Angels who crowd surf him to over to. Gods Right Hand side where he belongs.☆
    Here endeth the lesson.

Why would he have met him? Sanders was a student protestor, admirable but pretty low level.

    • @MinesAGuinness
      @MinesAGuinness 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

It didn't stop John Lewis making a speech and using this specifically to attack Bernie Sanders though, did it? A man with more honour would have simply said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know Mr Sanders back then. But I am happy that he made a stand as a young man, I see he has a good voting record on civil rights, and I hope that I inspired him." Mr Lewis framed his ignorance of Mr Sanders as an accusation instead, designed to denigrate him and bizarrely went on to uphold his preferred candidate as a participant in the Civil Rights Movement, confusing her with her husband Bill, it seems, who did protest, like Bernie. Hillary at that time was... a Goldwater Girl.

    • @MynameisBrianZX

He already clarified his comment as not insinuating that Sanders didn't participate, but that he just never crossed paths with Sanders, whereas he did meet and work with the Clintons, starting a continuing relationship that explains his support for Hillary Clinton.
      www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/feb/13/john-lewis-congressional-black-caucus-bernie-sanders-civil-rights-movement
Also, it's untrue that Clinton was uninvolved in civil rights activism during her college days.
      www.nytimes.com/2007/09/05/us/politics/05clinton.html
I think it's clear that John Lewis' endorsement shouldn't be taken as an indicator of which candidate has a better record of civil rights activism (both Clinton and Sanders were involved for a short time as students, though Sanders was undoubtedly a bigger pain in the ass for the police), but just a matter of who he happened to meet and work with. It's far from unbiased.

All matter of Civil Rights leaders from the 60's onwards had a multitude of opinions about the differences between Bernie and Hillary. To think they should saddle up next to one or the other is to ignore the complexity of political action.
Lewis probably has a more nuanced understanding of these matters than we do. Give him some credit.
