She-ra is incredible (hence my decision to make a tribute amv music video for it). I was introduced to She-ra via my little sister a few months ago (thanks btw / @cherriblossom0825 -that’s her channel)
And boy am I glad I was! I’d heard of the show before, but never really interacted with it. After seeing a few out-of-order videos over my sister’s shoulder, I was damn hooked.
The writing, the designs, and the CHARACTERS. A few months later I had watched the whole thing.
She-ra’s animation is nothing to scoff at, but where its strengths lie are without a doubt within its characters. Nearly everyone and their various relationships are intriguing in their own right. With most of the “villains” nearly stealing the show as the show’s ability to humanize every character is so very strong.
You will care for every character in this show, whether you like them or not. Swift Wind, of all characters, caught my heartstrings somehow. Even if only for a moment.
I obviously can’t do a full she-ra summary/analysis in this description, so I’ll just get to explaining my video.
I chose this song because I believe in this show all the characters, no matter what they do, all share one desire. To be someone to someone else. Catra and Adora's desires to be with each other, Adora and her desire to be a hero to Etheria, Glimmer and her desire to impress her mother even after death (or...limbo I guess. Geeze is she still in the void? I mean she’s immortal so...or did glimmer absorb her when she got her full powers? Idk), Bow’s desire to be the best friend he can be to Adora and Glimmer, Seahawk and Mermista, Frosta and her kingdom and also Glimmer, Swift Wind to Adora, Scorpia to...well anyone who will be her friend but mostly Catra, and on and on and on.
And so I tried to focus mainly on the characters and their various bonds/struggles with each other and their self-worth.
If you have yet to watch She-ra, fix that. Moving past its incredible writing, it's one of the few shows that I believe nails representation via presenting it as a completely normal thing. This show is meant to be a kid's show. And while the struggles the LGBTQ+ community face should be taught to kids, I believe first they should understand that the community is a normal part of life. Something that should be expected to exist and be seen in your life just as one sees the sunrise every morning.
While being a kid's show, it also tackles pretty complex issues with friends and relationships, and parenthood that I believe make it similar to an old Pixar movie. Where the story is easy enough for a child to follow and understand to a point, but older people can find enjoyment in it as well because the story is complex enough to warrant real analysis. Something for all ages.
I firmly believe this is a show anyone and everyone can take a new lesson from.
I could fall asleep to this every night❤️
