    One correction for Mr Williamson, about abortion in France. (I'm french and I'm a woman.) Abortion in France is legal since 1975, and it's not even a controversial topic. We can indeed get an abortion until the 3rd month (but if that's for a medical reason, like endangering the mother's life, or a malformation to the foetus, that's until the end of the pregnancy). But, unlike America, we have real sexual education in school (even in catholic ones) whitch inclued contraception and condoms (and not abstinence). Most young women are on birthcontrol and it's nearly free. Then, there is the "plan B" pill. But if you have delai on your periods, you can consult in any hospital (not in specific clinics outside of which there is scary anti-abortion activists), nobody will shame you, or try to pressure you into keeping it. Moreover, if you have a baby in France, there is : not expensive healf care, day-care, free schools (and neerly free universities). Most of the women with kids still work, and that's not a difficulty. So that's realy not the same deal.

      Today, the top 20% own 92% of American wealth and pay only 69% of revenue. They literally lopped off 25% of their fair share...since 1913.

    Reagan started the "run the country like a business" thing, and did his "trickle-down economics", and it failed miserably. Reagan's economic policy took away the greatest opportunity of my life. I graduated the 1st grade in 4 months, passed the second-grade "final" and therefore passed 2nd grade, and because of my phenomenal SAT scores, I was formally-invited to join Space Camp by NASA officials in person. However, I was just barely 9 years old at the time, and Space Camp had a minimum age requirement of 14 for recruitment. Before I could turn 14, Reagan had given all the money away to the rich and the Space Camp program was all but scrapped for lack of NASA funding, and I lost my opportunity of a lifetime. Reagan may have been indirectly responsible for the Challenger disaster due to how tight he had forced NASA's budget while still demanding the same operational capacity.
    Had Ronnie not decided to run America like a business, I would be typing this message from the ISS right now as a veteran certified cosmonaut and it would have taken longer to post because of literal distance and the speed of radio waves. Instead, I got two major car accidents and am now chair-bound, never to even come close to that dream again. Republicans kept trying to push this economic plan of their beloved deity Reagan (who they quickly forgot because it's now the party of Trump), and it has never worked and will never work. Republicans always push it now because it gets them richer, and damned be the rest of the American people who suffer for it, while their biggest challenge in life is which one of several luxury yachts to take out for the weekend while others wonder if they will eat anything tonight. Meanwhile the real genius in America is lost for nothing more than economic disparity, and I can't imagine how much has been lost already since then, or what we could have had if it was never lost from something so petty as avarice and incompetence.

      Because liberal outlets are so intent on appearing non-biased that they hire any Republican that appears to have a brain to say that they welcome opinions from all sides, failing to realize that "conservatives" are going to call them biased no matter what they do. Newspapers like The New York Times and Washington Post have conservative opinion people like Stephens, Douthat and Jennifer Rubin. Joe Scarborough and Nicole Wallace host shows on MSNBC. Michael Smerconish has his own show and a parade of right-wing loons and Trump apologists like Rick Santorum and Jack Kingston get airtime on CNN.
      And what do these supposed liberally biased outlets get in return? The label of "fake news" by dimwitted idiots and their orange messiah.

That said, not sure why Maher treated him like he was some fair moderate / centrist when he first introduced him and was shocked he kept disagreeing with him. It's like he got him confused with someone else or took his book title at face value. The real underlying point of his book is basically that the shrinking and increasingly more radical right should be given plenty of advantages to allow minority rule (as is currently the case) because majority rule is a "mob" and so very bad. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_D._Williamson

She has a vision of workers in Amazon for example, being able to unionize and make money out of the work that they put into the company. That is the reason why the AfD in Germany is a fringe party and Merkel was elected for another 4 years period. Because although Germany is the 3 largest economy in the world they don’t have the levels of inequality and social fracture that we are seeing in America.

      Yeah, instead of laughing at "how will it pay for itself?!", think about the jobs it will create, since it brings a whole shift along with it. It doesn't mean that unemployment will be solved, but new jobs will open up to provide the new demand for green tech.
      Besides, they're spending over half a trillion a year on military, cutting that in half will already open up about 2,5% of total cost of the plan (based on the 16trillion figure).
      Also, if technology advances as we focus on the new possibilities, military spending would also likely decrease if better deals can be made, think of DARPA having easier access to batteries and robotics.
      In other words, more efficient spending, instead of building obsolete tanks etc.
      Then of course, ideally, the costs of energy and production will go down, making products cheaper and leaving more money for the people to spend, which brings in more tax money, which also helps paying off the initial 16 trillion investment.
      It all sounds very "scary Socialist-Communist", but it is merely the result of a combined effort to combat disaster.

    Good for Porter. She actually gave a serious answer to Maher's stupid question. Did you notice how uncomfortable Maher looked as she gave a reasoned, thoughtful answer? Maher kept looking for the opportunity to turn the discussion into a punch line.

    That's the entire point of a recession.
    Adversity is the greatest spur for progress. If regular people can still afford everything they want, they will not bother to look at what's going on at the top. But when the world shakes and regular people are hungry, inevitably they will raise their voices and look for the culprits, look for answers.
    Hopefully.

      This is the same argument I heard from Democrats who voted for Trump. “It’ll destroy the Republican Party” Always try to minimize suffering, don’t root for regular people to be hurt worse than they already are. Btw, 40% of Americans are already hungry

    • @greebj

      Watch Trump manage to convince a lot of Americans about who is to blame for the recession. I'm gonna go on a limb and say the culprits will be mainly yellow and brown people.

    • @DG-kd5bs
      @DG-kd5bs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      philliesphan312 No I think the buying and selling of goods and services can be whatever price the market decides. I think what he’s saying is no ones salary needs to be more than 1 million dollars a year. That makes sense to me.

    • @philliesphan312
      @philliesphan312 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DG-kd5bs well his post says "no human needs more than $1 million per year." There is nothing that says except if you are selling a good or service. And even if he did say that the only way for it to work would be to cap goods and services at a certain amount.

    • @NateGerardRealEstateTeam
      @NateGerardRealEstateTeam 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you make $1 million per year, you can buy almost whatever you want to. A $2 million home would be well within your reach since there are plenty of people who buy $500,000 homes and only make $150,000 per year. What I'm saying is the greed excess that is fueled by people feeling they need to make as much as they can is unhealthy for the future of humanity. I'm no economist but it's probably unhealthy for the future of capitalism as well. Also, I'm not against profit, improving your life situation, making more this year than you did last year, but when do you have enough? $1 million per year would be a raise for me and I'm sure for the majority of people. It's a Utopian argument anyway.

    • @imzjustplayin
      @imzjustplayin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Serai3 That's true, buying a Maserati will not unbalance the economy... But you know what would? Creating unfair, unequal distribution of wealth thanks to the government. The economy works well when there is fairness and people can work towards their own goals on their own terms. Those who are most productive are rewarded accordingly. Anything else would kill the economy because those who are most productive and useful would be demotivated to go the extra step. Why go through the effort to create a mega corporation when you know all your money will be confiscated anyway.
      The economy is not a zero sum game. Some people having more money than me does not negatively affect my life in any way. The government is the most unfair, unequal, unintelligent, inefficient way to redistribute wealth and help people. The govt. should exist but by in large, it's far too big for its own good and only breeds corruption. Govt. encourages the creation of monopolies and oligopolies, encourages waste and abuse, creates markets that shouldn't exist, destroys other markets. Govt. in many circumstances creates more issues than it solves.
      Its handling of healthcare and education is a complete abomination.
