Arguments why Denji "saved" people from Aki: 1) Denji main mission from the start of the series was to kill gun devil. 2) People gave him their blood so he felt responsible. Why he didn't save people: 1) Denji always been chaotic and he probably thought that attack was his best chance to win. 2) I don't think Denji in his human-chaisaw form can catch a car that is already falling down. 3) the devil might have made a trap in the landing area which is a huge risk. 4) the devil could have killed a lot of people while denji was saving somebody 'cause they are literally in the middle of the city. 5) Denji doesn't show sympathy for people that he doesn't know.
yeah point no. 2 reminds me of when, at the beginning of the series, Denji fought the eternity devil to pay back Aki 's favour (taking a stab from Kobeni) And how he owed money to the mafia. I think he just hates owing stuff which is why he didn't wanna feel in debt with the people who gave him blood.
I always thought it was because denji knew aki wouldnt want to be killing innocent people, especially as a gun devil. So he saved Aki from killing a lot more people and being the gun devil by taking him out asap.
I think you're getting hung up on the choice of saving people too much. The purpose of Part 1 was Denji deciding to be Chainsaw Man and doing what HE wants to do instead of other people like Makima deciding for him. Denji was presented two options by the Cockroach devil but decided to do what HE wanted to do and saved the cat. It was a way of showing how far Denji has come, how he can think for himself and not be tied down to the choices other people give him (as of right now). Denji was confronted with the actual trolley problem and decided to take the secret third option. The focus on the interaction wasn't about Denji's morality (because he's never been morally righteous anyways) but what Denji does when presented with two hard choices.
It's even more obvious when he's given another choice by Yoshida but instead of just listening and following along, Denji takes the third option and eats with his hands instead. It's Denji showing actual autonomy in this series and not just going with the flow or listening to other ppl like he did all throughout Part 1 until he killed Makima
