One of my fave fights because a lot of people thought Oscar wasn’t “Mexican enough” or as tough as Vargas. He put that to rest real quick.

Yeah Oscar was supposedly too white to beat Fernando LOL. Oscar beat the hell out of Fernando and Vargas was cheating on steroids big time. What a loser excuse maker Vargas is. I have no respect for him on top of all what he talked about Oscar he claimed Tito had loaded gloves because he got the hell knocked out of him. Fernando is a delusional punk.

Also, if he was capable of improving, he still could have after his losses. He was still part of an incredible stable of fighters with world class trainers. He just wasn't destined to be a long running champion. No shame in it either, dude still reached the peak of the sport and made millions. Great career and not rushed.

One of Oscar's greatest performances - and he was very fortunate to have Floyd Sr. in his corner that night - who told him to STICK WITH HIS JAB. Which Oscar hardly EVER did even though he has one of the top ten jabs in boxing history imho (EDIT- AND RE-WATCHING THIS FIGHT i AM TOTALLY RIGHT, OSCAR'S JAB WAS A BEAUTIFUL STRIKE, JUST A GORGEOUS JAB, probably because he's a natural southpaw like Miguel Cotto).....Oscar could have won that Floyd Jr, fight but he somehow miraculously STOPPED JABBING in the middle of the fight for some "odd" reason. He did that in a few fights. Oscar was also ROBBED against Sugar Shane Mosley in that rematch - Shane's face when he was announced the winner told the whole story - he LOST that fight BIG TIME and he knew it. Oscar got lots of hate - but SOME of it was warranted. Like that Tito fight - I KNOW he boxed his butt off until about the 5th or 6th round - but THAT IS NOT what people paid to see and BOXING and RUNNING is NOT how he made his NAME up until that point. He didn't do that with Quartey - he stood and traded - he basically stood and traded with EVERYBODY - UNTIL he got to Tito. And in the VHS copy of the fight I have - Roy Jones Jr. SAYS THIS - and explains THAT was the reason he lost. He went on to say that you CANNOT make your name as a certain type of fighter and then in your biggest fight against your biggest rival - you want to do the opposite and expect to get the win. Dude tried to win the first few rounds and then coast - without ever really engaging Tito. Yeah it's "smart" - if you're a vet who's fighting another vet - but not when you're known as a young killer going up against another young killer. It's GOING TO TURN PEOPLE OFF. And it DID. But Oscar deserves ALL his kudos. Dude NEVER really ducked anyone at all, win or lose, and he almost always went out there to at least entertain the fans. Like that FIRST Mosley fight which he could have WON of he'd IRONICALLY fought that same fight he fought against TITO. The ONE fight I always wanted from him but NEVER GOT was - Oscar vs Vernon Forrest (sleep in peace) after Vernon simply DESTROYED the young p4p #1 Shane Mosley. And YES Shane WAS the number one p4p fighter on MANY people's lists after that Oscar fight.

This is one of the best fights for me growing up cos I was always teased as a 'pretty boy sissy' and looking 'like a chick' and I was always bullied and pushed around by the rougher looking kids and I was forced to fight when I never wanted to and I won and I knew what disrespect Oscar went through in his life too and this fight was almost exactly what I dealt with and what I did when I'd finally stand up for myself and Vargas personified the bullies I knew and I was soooo happy Oscar showed that it is not nice to be jealous of someone and use that to hurt them. Like me he gave the bully a beating.... ( I'm over six feet tall and was always fast and then became a Thai boxer who travelled the country and then even around Europe , especially Holland, to fight so never judge a book by it's cover). Vargas found out. He turned out to be a guy I liked but at the end of the day he hated De La Hoya for all the wrong reasons and he was humiliated despite even being a drug cheat which makes this victory sweeter. I knew Oscar was the better man. That's my story of this fight and I know other people will understand what I mean.

What a great fight. I watched most of this fight waiting for Oscar to utilize that left hook. Vargas seemed to either not respect De la Hoya's power or was just ill prepared for that particular punch. When Oscar first threw it early in the fight ( Rd. 1 or 2) it was clear, at least imo, that Vargas had no defense for it.
