Hello, I am currently a senior looking to apply to the Spieker program. I saw on the Berkeley website that if not admitted directly into the program they will not consider you for an alternate major. How competitive do you think this program will be? Should I consider applying as another major? (berkeley is my top choice)
Someone who's good enough to be a CEO or an executive at a corporation, for example, wouldn't need to attend UC Berkeley. Every college video that I watch has a business school named after someone, and my hunch is that it's person and not the business school that matters. So, I'm sure that someone could attend a 2-year program elsewhere, not stress out, and they'll end up with the same career in the end. Also, like the video said, I think that the institution that a graduate degree was earned at it is the one that employers really look at.
This is one of the business schools from the videos that I watch: David Eccles School of Business | University of Utah. U Utah isn't a top 100 institution, but I can guarantee that Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, or Jeff Bezos could have earned a degree from that business school and they'd still be exactly where they are today. They'd have the exact same knowledge as a graduate from any top 100 institution. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, but it didn't hurt him one bit. It's the leader that matters, not the institution, and the leader might not even need a degree.
Berkeley has had an undergraduate business major, but it was only a 2-year program, where you would apply as a sophomore at Berkeley. However now with this change, the business major will be a 4-year program that you would apply to as a high school senior! More information about the 4 year program can be found here - haas.berkeley.edu/spieker-program. Hope this helps!
How would this affect double majoring? I'm currently a high school junior right now and wanted to originally major cognitive science and then add on the business major later on. If I'm interested in both, would I have to apply for business major during college applications or L&S?
My daughter is currently a highschool sophomore and wants to take UCB Business. She plans on taking both AP classes and GE college courses at the local community college for her junior year. I told her this would be a heavy load, but she says it'll help her. Is this recommendable so she can get in? Or are there other steps that she can take to ensure she gets into the program? And is it okay that she's taking the college courses? Would it help her graduate earlier or would she still be required to take the 4-year course?
It is ok that she is taking college courses in high school! With admissions, doing this looks really good because it shows she is challenging herself academically. With taking both AP and CC courses junior year, make sure she is still able to perform well in those classes to earn good grades. I would also say, getting involved in her high school and other extracurriculars would be useful in the application process. If she has prior business-related experience and/or can demonstrate why she is interested in studying business on her applications would also be helpful in order to tell her story to admissions. Hope this helps!
There seems to be limited information about the process to apply to Haas for the 4 year undergrad. Is there a separate essay in addition to the UC PIQs, are there specific requirements for coursework in high school like 4 years of foreign language, AP Calc BC, would community college credits help, any specific other experiences ?
Yeah, the information on the Haas website is super limited right now - I'd imagine they will update the information maybe this summer because the new program admissions will start this fall. I haven't seen any information regarding the new Haas admissions process in terms of extra essays. Right now when applying to Berkeley, you can put Business as your intended major under L&S, so I would assume all the regular Berkeley and L&S requirements would be necessary for admissions. Everything you do in HS would be helpful for Haas and Berkeley admissions. Haas specifically looks for the following characteristics - Academic Achievement, consistency and impact in extracurriculars, personal attributes and life experience, communication and analytical skills - so any activities/hobbies/interests/passions you have that relate to those are always helpful!
Thank you for the advice, but I wanted to ask you directly🙂. As I read, there should be American history test that is required to be passed for undergraduating, so is it only for In-state students? Or it affects Out-of-state students too? And another question, is it considerable to send motivational letter?
@@archivesedited6607 Hey Archives! If you mean the UC American History requirement, this would be for all undergraduate students, no matter if you are in-state or not. You would have to take a specific college course to fulfill the requirement or some UCs allow certain high school classes to fulfill this requirement. For the third question, if a course is required to graduate, then you would need to take the class before graduating. Basically to earn a college degree in a specific field, you would have to take the required classes in order to earn the degree. For motivational letter, do you been letter of recommendation?
I just got into the Spieker program and this video helped me so much! Thank you!
CONGRATULATIONS!! That's a huge accomplishment! I'm glad the video was helpful :)

Also, I found your channel not long time ago, but your content is so interesting! Thank you so much for the information!🔥
If college requires some courses to be completed for full degree, does that mean that I should take them only after graduating?
