KZ is undeniably one of the most copied/emulated vocalists in TV Singing contests/shows today. Her distinct vocal timbre and style of singing just stood out after she auditioned for X-factor 2012 where she received a standing ovation from all of the judges. 6 years after winning the competition, she gained wider popularity when she joined Singer 2018, an all-star international singing competition in China, where she defeated Jessie J in one episode.
It is no longer a question that KZ has now changed the standards of local singing competitions from traditional lung-busting power ballads to songs that showcase diverse artistry. Her unique singing style which is a wide fusion of Jazz, Indie, Soul, Rock, R&B, Hiphop, Pop, and a bit of Ballad became a very unique brand of her own. Her beautiful husky tone is contains shades of Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Zia Quizon, Haley Reinhart, Nina, Yeng Constantino, Jessie J, Corinne Bailey Rae, Rihanna, and Sia. Her low notes, on the other hand, are solid and audible (done in a low breathing placement). Her midbelts are also done with a low-breathing technique and a lowered larynx positioning but they sound REALLY DARK, ROUND, & POWERFUL. Her upperbelts are filled with tasteful and natural-sounding rasp that she naturally got from the polyps that grew inside her throat before she entered the music industry.
Despite the damage and the change in the shape of her vocal cords, the rasp in her belts still suited her singing style so well that it even gave more character and Rock-ish edge to her general JAZZY modal tone.
She may not have the widest range in the Philippines, but her vocal range is still pretty wide especially for an artist of her style/genre. You will rarely hear indie/jazz-influenced singers belt their mids with such power and roundness. You also rarely hear them blow some powerful gritty upperbelts and execute creative riffs/runs. KZ is definitely one of the best vocalists we have in the country right now. She may not fit the conventional “TH-cam” standards of great singing, but she still obviously does a lot of DIFFICULT THINGS with her voice that are not easy to replicate by anybody. She definitely has the one of the widest artistry & musicality among all the mainstream vocalists in the country. The amount of elements that you would hear in her voice is just insane. She really is one of the best in her own unique way, and her voice is definitely an instrument. Enjoy this video and appreciate KZ’s singing talent even more!
